Not sure what to do!!!

Recommended Posts

philip1000

I had an IgG blood test in December this year and the results came back Positive for HSV1 and negative for HSV2 (I had not had a sexual encounter for 6 months previous to this test). 2/3 months later I decided to have another IgG blood test and the results came back as follows......

HSV1 4.8

HSV2 1.4

(biokit elisa) had test in uk

I'm now confused, as I'm unsure which results are correct. I have not had any new sexual partners)

What do my results mean and what should I do now??? Does this mean i have ghsv2?

Please Help!!!!

Hi philip,

I'm confused because I ggogled the biokit test and I don't see anything that indicates there would be numbers associated with the biokit, that test has windows that would show white for negative and pink/red for positive.

If these are IgG test results then they indicate a low positive. It is possible that seroconversion happens at a slower rate when there is an existing type 1 infection.

I suggest you re-test at a later date for confirmation on type 2.

Hope that helps a little.

Philip, false positive results can sometimes happen and I remember reading somewhere that having HSV1 affects HSV2 readings on elisa tests. If you're really concerned about HSV2, you could do a retest. The value is really close to cutoff and could be false positive.

Thanks........

Thanks for the reply!!! The test is by biokit and I think its called the bioelisa HSV2 test. I think I will wait another couple of weeks and then retest. I'm very worried at the moment, but i suppose there is not much I can do until I find out the final results.

Is it possible this could be ghsv1? I'm pretty sure I had a cold sore a kid!

It's always possible, but not probable in this case. If you had ghsv2, it should have shown up in the previous test. Unless you were exposed to hsv2 between the two tests, it isn't likely. Are you showing any symptoms? Why are you worried, besides the tests?

Hi philip,

Obviously you have an established type 1 infection most likely because of cold sores as a child but the type 2 appears to be a new infection. It can't be type 1 but it could be a false positive so all you can do is re-test to either confirm or dispute this result.

P.S. If these results are from a biokit, which I doubt, then they absolutely can't be type 1 because the biokit does not test for type 1

Ok, this is obviously a different test and it does report EIA values close to what they interpret with the IgG test.

According to this test you do test positive. It is up to you whether you want to confirm or try to dispute this in the future.

And they do have one for HSV-1. I learn something new everyday. Good luck babe.

Oops.. never mind, I found the values. >1 is supposed to be positive. However, the point still stands about false positives.

ok..... do you think I should have the same test again, or get tested with the original test?

Thanks for all your quick replies....

It's my understanding that the IgG is less expensive and you may not get the results as quick. I don't know which brand they use in the UK but the one the FDA approves in the states is the HerpeSelect Elisa made by Focus Technologies, other makers IgG tests have been less reliable.

I know very little about the accuracy of the BioElisa but it looks good from what I could deduce on the link you sent. I guess the choice is up to you.

Mr_Smith

A simple point of clarification; The Herpes Select test, by Focus Technologies, comes in 3 different flavors; ELISA, Immnuoblot, and Plexus. All are FDA approved in the States. The ELISA returns numeric values, the Immnuoblot returns an easy to read 'negative' or 'positive'. The Plexus was released last year.

Point well taken, Mr Smith. I wasn't aware of the Plexus.

I tend to have tunnel vision sometimes especially since the Elisa is the one most commonly used.

Went to have another test today!!! I told the doctor about the conflicting results and he said this could be due to antibody levels going up and down!!! He said it would be possible for someone with herpes to test negative if they were not experiencing symptoms at the time.

Im sure this is not true! I thought your antibody levels leveled out and remained constant.....

Any thoughts????

Actually, they do fluctuate, especially in a new infection, it is reported that they peak at 4-6 weeks from exposure but also tend to level off after seroconversion is established. It's possible they rise and fall as needed but I would assume they would still result as positive after they are built up in your blood.

I could be wrong so if anyone else has an educated guess or disputes this, please let me know.

Why not ask your doctor to appease you and run the test again but be careful not to challenge him because they hate that.

That also makes me question why I have not tested positive for type 1. I never had cold sores but an occasional fever blister on my chin.

Awww philip, I was so hoping that the other tests were wrong but at least you now have your answer. I know that gutted feeling you speak of.

I hope you continue to come back and learn more about how to cope with your symptoms and emotions and eventually that feeling will go away.

Hang in there babe, we're here for ya.

Im a bit unsure where I got this from!!!! I think there are 2 possibilities.......

1) My ex-girlfriend: She did have a sore once at the bottom of her vagina and went to the doctors.

It had started healing up and the doctor said it was just a rub from her underwear!!!

2) After finishing with my ex, I had a short relationship with another female. We had sex twice, the first protected and then once unprotected after she had been to the clinic and got tested....

I didn't get any symptoms for a couple of months after finishing with her and at the time I was very stressed after finishing from a long term relationship.

Do you think its a possibility I got this from my ex? I dont think she has had any other symptoms since....

Gee, I don't think anyone can even venture a guess but I wear thongs and never once have they rubbed my vagina sore, but have you spoken to the one after the girlfriend and asked if she is negative since you both had unprotected sex together?

I don't suppose you will ever know for sure philip but the ex with the vaginal sore throws up a red flag. No sense trying to rack your brain trying to figure it out, it won't change anything. Sorry babe.

skincalm

my remedy

I have dealt with this for 30 years. I take Valtrex, L-Lysine, and use Pure Aloe Vera Liquid to stop skin triggers that also cause outbreaks. Valtrex is through the doc, L-Lysine in the grocery store, check out [advertising link removed] to buy the pure aloe vera liquid. I could not find it in stores and set up a wholesale deal as the manufacturer to distribute their product for this use.

Best of luck - this is not life and death but I know it can feel that way.

I read an article about arganine vs lysine. The tests they get this info off were done in a test tube and not on humans. There was also another study done on mice with herpes. Mice die from herpes and when they gave the group of mice higher arganine than the 2nd group, it actually kept them alive longer than the group not given it. I was taking lysine until recently and I've noticed no difference and I eat a vegan diet which is higher in arganine. The only thing lysine seems to do is stop the itchy tingling feeling I get but then again that might be in my head like the placebo effect.

When I had my first and second outbreak of genital hsv1, I had a weird thing happen with my throat.  The first time which was 2 days before the sores appeared, I woke up in the night unable to breath because my throat felt like it had closed up. The second time it happened it was the same thing but much milder.

Maybe try black seed oil 1 t? Maybe a sauna or there is a group that will help you build an infared tent. Really great for acne and it will disappear while doing it.  Hormone inbalance?
