A few questions

My Girlfriend all of a sudden came up to me and told me she thought she may have had herpes. She said she noticed some sort of bump around her vagina. At first I was shocked, because the only person I ever had any kind of sexual intimacy with was her, which includes oral. One time many many many months back I did have a cold sore in my mouth when I gave oral to her, and not thinking anything of it I told her. She freaked a little, but I didn't understand why.

Now that she thinks she may have it, there is a lot of tension between us. For one thing, I had no idea that cold sores were a form of herpes. So, that basically means that everyone that gets cold sores is infected? I know that I got them long before I was sexually active, so how was I infected?

Also, how can it be so dangerous if it came from the mouth? What I mean is, if I did indeed gave her genital herpes, how does it go from being a harmless fact of life for many people (including myself) to being this uncurable genital disease? This part confuses me the most.

From reading this website, I've basically come to the conclusion that while everyone gets cold sores in their mouths, when they know that one is there they should stop any kind of sexual activity until it is healed over, to avoid infection of the other party. Is this the basic key to it all?

Also, is there anythin else I should know? Thanks.

Most people don't. That's the problem.

So' date=' that basically means that everyone that gets cold sores is infected?[/quote'] Yes. Normally HSV1 but it can be either.

Don't confuse cold sores and canker sores.

Cold sores are ON the mouth, usually lips and are HSV1 related.

Canker sores are IN the mouth and are not HSV1 related.

Two different kinds of sores

I"m no expert - but I thought - and still do that herpes sores can also be in the mouth.

Are you sure? Not to doubt you, but everything I have read has led me to believe that this WAS the case, and if it isn't then that changes everything about my current situation.

@EssenceL25 there really isn't a question mark around the source, it's your latest partner. The median time from infection to an outbreak of lesions upon initial infection is 4 days.  The only thing that isn't certain is the type I suggest.

I asked if it was hsv 1 or 2 and the doctor said it was Hsv2. I’m not sure i just asked him when he was tested last he said this year I said I think we should go test together and he agreed . I’m going to bring it up again cause I really need to know if he gave this to me I wasn’t sure since it was so close to my previous relationship.

@EssenceL25 then it is all beyond reasonable doubt that the current partner is the source. A 'perfect' fit in terms of timing, symptoms and swab. It may be though that the type is not technically known. Culture swabs are very often not typed and just assumed to be HSV-2 if taken from a genital location. If you received oral sex in the days leading into 7 March then it is 50/50 as to whether this is HSV-1 or HSV-2. You could contact your doctor and confirm if the swab was actually typed (which is a second test where fluorescent antibodies for HSV-1 and HSV-2 are added and see which one 'glows').  If that test wasn't done then you do not know type. If you have oral HSV-1 yourself (cold sores) then this will be HSV-2. Does your partner have oral HSV-1? It is somewhat strange for him not to rush and test - many people have a 'reaction' if they truly do not know their status and have concerns that you infected them etc. (not initially rational of course). This indicates he may know his status - or maybe he just isn't simply the sharpest tool in the shed!?

I had flu like symptoms and ulcers on my vagina . They did a culture and I tested positive for hsv2. I asked my partner to get tested he agreed but I’m not sure if he will cause he hasn’t said anything else about it.
