I have had herpes (genital) for 20 years now. The good news is i went on to marry someone who was herpes free and did not ever catch herpes and i have two wonderful children despite having attacks when pregnant.

the downside is that for the past 8 years i have had recurrent herpes which they thought were linked to my period but proved not to be. I was on acyclovir for a year ot two then it stopped working. Then i tried a homeapthic treatment with cost about $1000 and that stopped me having attacks for a year or so then i started getting them again and went on to famvir which is now not working. I have also been told that i cannot take long term famvir now for a couple of months. The only product i have not tried is Valtrx.

Although i am ultra careful not to pass it on to anyoene else which can be tricky given that i have been having attacks every month and though the spots are not that severe the other sypmtoms are i.e. feeling depressed, tired etc etc.

I recently bought choraphor which seemed to work initially but this time i have a really bad outbreak and its has done nothing at all to help. Two weeks into the worse attack i have ever had and taking famvir and topical pencyclovir and chorophor initally. Plus salt baths and tea tree etc i am beginning to think this bloody virus has got the better of me.

Very unhappy!

Thankyou very much, yinyang, for posting your story. :)

I'm sorry to hear that you're having such bad outbreaks... :(

I've only recently been infected, and have my fingers crossed...

It is very positive though, to hear that you have not passed on the virus to your partner. This is something that I fear in my future.

re passing on the virus

Well if its any consolation i caught herpes from a boyfiend while travelling in my twenties. I found out i had herpes officially a few months before i was due to be married to a person that was not infected. I got myself in a right state because i thought he wouldn't marry me but when i told him about it he was great. And during that time i was particularly careful not to pass it on,. !5 years is a long time.

Yinyang,

Can you please tell me what kind of precautions you took (and are taking now), to prevent passing on the virus...

I'm sure it would be very helpful to many other people visiting this forum, also...

Even the smallest thing may be very useful...

Thankyou! :)

First of all practice safe sex is a must with a new partner and always ensure your partner washes immediately after sex. I was lucky in that my husband although he is now ex husband was born muslem and had scrupulous hygiene and was circumcised. Apparently someone who is circumcised has far les risk of catching anything than someone who isn.t . I have spoken to lots of people and many people have sex and dont wash afterwards until the morning. leaving every possiblity however remote for something to stay in the system longer.

I am guessing from your log in you are male so i would assume you would make sure your partner uses a female condom to protect her.

During my marriage i didn;t practice safe sex at all however as soon as i had a predrome or slight tingling sex was not on the agenda. Not even safe saex. so always remember whenever you feel that tingle is a reminder not to have any kind of sexual intercouse.

I know it is possible to pass the virus on if you have viral shedding but in all the time i was married this never happened. I think alot of people of not aware of their bodies and i was always acutely aware of what was happening. As for the reason i have recurrent attacks now i am told that its because my immune system is compromised as i have chrohns disease and it makes me more suspectible to illness.

Oh and find a sympathetic healthcare worker that understands herpes.

Good luck

Thankyou again, yinyang! :)

I had heard that warm soapy water kills the virus immediately, so washing after sex would be a good way of reducing the likelyhood of transmission.

I will continue to post my experiences on this forum also, in the hopes they may be helpful to someone...

Good luck to you too in finding some relief from the symtoms.

Not true. I washed immediately after sex with an ex. With soap too. Still got it. Having my second outbreak now. And it's only a week after the first one has healed.

I have had genital Herpes for over 9 years, it comes and goes infact i am going through an out break right now. I have tried lots of things nothing seems to work for me.i have had two outbreaks in the last three weeks they make me feel dirty and depressed. i live in london england. People over here do not talk about herpes openly i have never told any of my friends. Its a secret, a dirty secret. i see a lot of things on thew market they are very expensive. i used lemon balm which is cheap about £4 tea tree oil is ok for the healing. i think my body gets used to the supressives i use after a while and get strong over them. I am trying to come to terms with having herpes but it is difficult.the tingling is just as bad you sit there thinking are you gonna come or not you little bastards. i was at university the other day dying for the loo i tried to hold it because i knew that the blisters will sting the hell out of me. any advice?

Amen to YingYang's comment about finding an understanding healthcare worker. I was fortunate to have found a healthcare worker who actually has hsv2. It was very comforting to know that she had it also. It just helped me to feel like I was not alone. I know the statistics say that 1 out of 4 people have hsv, but it seems that you are the only one that has it and there is no one to talk to about it. It is also amazing to me that many healthcare workers do not understand this virus and they look at you like you are the plague.

I've had it for 16 years now and my husband got it from me but he knew I had it before we got intimate and didn't want to practice safe sex, he told me didn't care if he got it .. that he loved me that much. I am fortunate in that aspect, I know. but believe me I spent many years before that not being as safe as I should have been and feel like an utter retard for not doing so, kudos to you for being diligently safe and to those who 'try' and it still don't work, at least you tried.

Hi "Jeremy"..... I agree, the topic of your HSV status does not need to be something you disclose too soon in a developing relationship..... get to know each other first....see how it's going and as it progresses, then the HSV issue will naturally need to be revealed.... it's my personal opinion though that before there is any sexual encounter you ought to disclose your HSV status.... I know some will disagree with me on this but, I think it is morally wrong not to disclose first.  This can be a make/break situation for most people but, again, I feel it is simply wrong not to give the other person the whole story since your decision not to disclose could put their health at risk.... that is simply not an option in my opinion.  Looking back to my "pre-HSV" life I most certainly would want my partner to disclose their HSV+ status before intimacy so that I could make my decision as to whether I want to take that risk or not....

Thanks, CHT. I appreciate the feedback. The whole trauma of going through this has led me to figure out a lot about myself and my attachment wounds, so I'm taking courses to come out of this better. This girl really was my dream woman in so many ways, it's been the hardest heartbreak to deal with ever. I'm truly in a lot of pain, but using the pain as fuel to launch that new business and work with coaches. I also opened up to my family about HSV, so my parents and sister know now, and they were very loving and accepting of it. Since opening up about it, I feel way better around this thing. After opening up, I also found out that some mutual friends in our family have discordant couples who are married with children, so HSV hasn't stopped them from living a loving life. The thing is... all of these couples I mention did not disclose until 6-8 months into the relationship. So now I'm thinking it might be better not to disclose until I know things are very serious. I'll of course stay on the medication and use protection, but maybe this is a better route than disclosing upfront and scaring women off.

Hey @Lcj987 and welcome to the website. You can be sure that isn't HSV-2, looks nothing like it. It is much more likely to be folliculitis or inflamed fordyce spots.

Hey @JackThrowAway herpes causes an outbreak where it enters the body first and maybe a progressive spread. If it doesn't cause an outbreak at the entry site then it won't cause one elsewhere, it also won't 'jump' upon infection - it would be more likely that the lesions are continuous from the penis to the anus. Nevertheless, testing trumps symptoms or any interpretation of symptoms. The correct conclusive result arises when: you have a positive swab; or An IgG HSV-2 level over 3.5 (Herpeselect test).

Slept with someone unprotected, roughly 2 weeks ago now. I felt generally unwell the couple of days after but I’d been drinking the whole weekend and didn’t have much sleep either of the days of that weekend so put it down to that. 6 days after I noticed these spots appear on the shaft of my penis. Along with symptoms of discomfort in my shaft in the couple of days prior to them appearing. No pain when urinating at all that I have noticed. They don’t hurt, itch or tingle and they don’t have fluid in from what I can see or feel if I squeeze them and have never burst? I went to a sexual health clinic to get checked up, they took bloods to do a full test and looked at the spots but said they saw nothing that concerned them but I’m not sure about that, any advice? The smaller spots under the shaft are just follicles I had diagnosed years ago and non-sti related.
