Herpeselect igg testing.... waiting for results

Recommended Posts

So i decided to get retested on monday for the virus.... before i had just gotten the igg and not the herpeselect...or i really dont know it just said IgG on the paper... and there was all this confusion, my doctor said she did not trust the lab where i had gotten blood work done orginally..... although when i went back she was still contracted w/ the lab and other ppl were still getting their results sent there (something that i dont understand)... however she encouraged me to get retested to be 100% sure.... i have had obs so i wont be surprised with the results... but then she started to say something to me that maybe i could have EBV?.... which i'm like huh...has anyone ever been diagnosed for hsv and it was EBV?... when i googled ebv it doesnt sound like i have it so i dont even know why she brought that up. i just want to know if i have hsv1 or hsv2 or both and be 100% sure. also b/c the person who im 99% sure i got it from when he got retested at a diff lab it came back negative. i'm kinda curious to find out my second results... so now i wait. -__-

Well, if you test differently then I will probably go back and get tested myself, just to be sure, as I have a confirmed diagnosis of EBV (mono) at the time of what was apparently my HSV infection... then again I also got a Western Blot (drawn from the same blood sample but used three weeks later)... keep us updated and happy holidays.

did you have a genital ob? b/c i have only had genital obs... i have not had an ob on my mouth. my original infection - i had swollen lymph nodes (both), swollen and infected tonsils, HIGH fever, genital sores, pain, more pain, and fatigue etc etc.... was this similar to yours?

I have been itching (burning, general discomfort) like a crazy person for months now but I recently started treatment for BV and it slowly seems to be going away...

I have had what I believe have been two "blister" outbreaks, one in April and one in August, but maybe (just maybe?) that was something else? I do tend to get a lot of ingrown hairs.

My other (faint) hope is that because I had EBV when I apparently contracted the virus and my body was an extremely weakened state, the fact that I am now healthy might mean that my body has taken a hammer to the virus that was deposited in my body and that I'm now negative by HerpeSelect... guess I will find out in the New Year, I am praying pretty hard at this point.

did u ever go on valtrex or acyclovir? i started the antivirals and everything cleared up after that.. i stopped taking them in october. did ur blood test come back positive for hsv? and i agree w/ you on ur statement above... i think if your body has handled the virus or if you dont get obs the herpeselect is less likely to pick up the anitbodies....or will probably come back negative. i would be kinda curious to find out how many ppl that are asymptomatic that have had heperselect or tests done in general and it has come back positive..... also that is probably why they dont include it in the standard std test... b/c its probably hard to figure out if someone has it for sure if they are NOT having obs... there has to be a better way to figure out if someone has the virus or not.. it is very frustrating....

The Western Blot was positive, which is why my hope isn't too big... but the WB and the iGg are both 98% accurate, presumably for the same "mistakes" (false positives, I hope). I mean, here I am freaking out about a transmission rate of 1-2% to my partner and I'm accepting a test that's 98% accurate? I think it's worth revisiting for me, due the the EBV and my HSV-1 status...

Update!

Got my results today... it came back negative for both hsv1 & hsv2. i'm SHOCKED... but i do NOT believe these blood tests b/c like i've stated earlier i think my antibodies were too low for the test to detect. i'm thinking about getting a western blot test. i think i am positive for hsv2 at least b/c i've had outbreaks.. i couldnt sit for an entire month.. this isnt all in my head......... how can these tests fluctuate soooo much. i called my ex.. he didnt pick up :: sighs::: left him message letting him know about my results since his second test results came back negative for both also. i wanted him to fax me his worksheet so i could compare.. but thats hopeless now.... i dunno.. this entire thing is making me go CRAZY!!! i'm wondering could i have had ebv??? but does ebv cause you to have genital sores??? i'm sooooooooo confused....... i guess i just had to wait now. i thought this would bring some clarity to my situation but it has just brought me more confusion! -__- . i will post the numerical results on a later post. i got it over the phone.. all i know it was 0.08 and below for both. when i did igg before it was 2.8?. soooooo now i want to get a western blot to be 100% sure i also want to get tested for ebv just to rule that out. i wish my gyno would have brought this up EARLIER... it could of saved so many tears, heart break, and stress! :: sighs ::

Weird, I definitely responded to this thread... maybe it didn't post?

Congratulations/how strange! So you're going to get the WB? I guess here we are obsessing over a 98-99% chance against transmission on meds/condoms and we're taking a 98% accuracy rate on the HerpeSelect and Western Blot to be absolutely accurate.

I have an appointment for January 8 and that EBV and HSV-1 is on my mind as potentially confusing those tests... I've had the two "outbreaks" and insane itching/tingling/burning for the past nine months but my doctor has been insisting that it's not a herpes symptom... maybe he's right. And it's been on my mind lately that some people's bodies might really be able to fight back and bring the HerpeSelect below 0.90 (especially? possibly? if they were immunocompressed when they contracted it and have since recovered)

I know what you mean about weird signs -- I don't normally get into horoscopes and that but I have been getting weird horoscopes about a good prognosis and miraculous remedies and what I need about to be found (that was today). Yesterday I was told that "Something wonderful, magical and rare is coming your way."

Herpes Awareness

EBV is of course Epstein-Barr virus, or the virus that causes glandular fever or infectious mononucleosis (IM). It is also a member of the herpes family of viruses, but likes to settle in B-cells in the blood rather than in nerve cells, so it is quite a distant relative. I haven't heard of EBV being mistaken for HSV before in terms of analysing antibody test results. The acute symptoms on contracting EBV are very similar to HSV, however -- if you report fevers, swollen glands and all the rest of it to a doctor, without conclusive test results, they may suggest it could be EBV -- a common virus easily transmitted via saliva.

The jury's still out on the accuracy of HerpeSelect type tests, I think it's more like 90% accuracy -- I'm going to call one of the supplier companies this week for a chat about their 'new, improved' test that produces fewer ambiguous results, or so they claim, with the intention of advocating more screening to the College of GPs in their training protocols.

You need to see another doctor. A lot of them are not trained very well. Did you get a PCR test done at the first signs of illness? Didn't you say you had a positive Western Blot as well?

No to the PCR. Yes to the WB, which has been proven to be 98% accurate (to my understanding, with cross-reactions to other herpes viruses possible). No numbers were given on the HerpeSelect test.

I'm pretty sure that my doctor was right they weren't HSV symptoms. I have recently been treated for bacterial vaginosis and the itching/soreness/burning has been diminishing in frequency and severity and I'm hopeful that it will be gone soon. I am going to get checked again for yeast and strep B as well.

I am getting another igg test soon to see what's up as well.

ANd eight hours is on a surface...on a towel who knows. The eight hours was a quote off a thread a long time ago of worst case senerio. Obviously it doesnt survive double touching unless its some weird arse almost immediate thing off a shedding site and this is all WORST case scenerio. HSV shouldnt be treated with stigma...but for everyones well being it should be treated as carefully as poss. It is a highly contagious condition and can be difficult to diagnose and GP's will let you walk away thinking you are clear when you are not if you do not do your due diligence.

I knew more about it than the specialists at the hospital I was refereed to.

      Thanks.

I have seen your advise on a few threads and to be honest while I am over careful at times you are not careful enough. This can absolutely happen and people should be well aware of the fact to prevent it from happening. I supposedly have good immunity on labs too. You just cant tell who will pick it up. It can live on surfaces for up to eight hours and towels that are wet and warm and that make micro abrasions when rubbed on skin are ways that transmission that can occur. You will often find out more by spending many hours reading on threads than your doctors. SO no it doesn't always just involve a cut on the skin. How do you think people get it else where.

So please DO NOT swear at me as this is a possibility and this person should careful tick all his bases before ruling it out, cos on the rare case it is I wouldnt want his life totally ruined. Cos if it gets everywhere your life kinda is.

      It's called caring.
