I don't trust doctors! PLEASE HELP!

About five weeks ago I had drunk unprotected sex (oral and vaginal) with a complete stranger. I feel totally ashamed and regretful and every day hate myself more and more for what happened. A couple days after the incident I was checked for chlamydia and gonorrhea (tested negative). About a week later I noticed some red irritation just south of my vagina and went to the STD clinic. I was swabbed for herpes and tested negative. The doctor confirmed it was "trauma" from rough sex. That night, I noticed a bump on my lower lip that I hadn't before. It's JUST barely in the inside moist part of my lower lip. It's been about 4 weeks and it's still there. It seems another bump has appeared as well. They don't look like pimples. They are fleshed coloured and if you stretch them look like they have a white core to them. About a week ago, my lips were really dry and one cracked around the edges. It didn't weep or crust or anything. I've been putting vaseline and polysporin on it and it seems to be fine but these two bumps are still there, not changing at all. They don't hurt or anything but feel sensitive in the cold weather. I went to a walk-in clinic eight days ago and showed the doctor. He said it could possibly be herpes and would swab it and get back to me in 7 to 10 days. Today is day 8. I showed a friend of mine who has been a nurse in sexual health for many years and she said the bumps don't look like herpes but judging by these other posts, that doesn't mean anything. I also forgot to mention I've had a severe yeast infection for the last 3 or 4 weeks. Shortly after I noticed the bumps, I was still sore in my vaginal area. I had sex (protected of course) and it made it ten times worse. The whole area became red, swollen, and the skin around my vaginal opening was white with little cuts. I showed the doctor immediately and she was about to swab it for yeast, then said she didn't need to because it was very clear what the problem was. She said it was one of the worst yeast infections she has ever seen. The problem is I have never had a yeast infection in my life and I don't seem to have the typical cottage-cheese discharge. She gave me an anti-biotic, some anti-fungal cream, and monistat and it all worked really well up until new year's eve. I drank a lot of beer and the next day felt a million times worse. I felt as if I had fallen on my bum badly and I could barely walk. I've also noticed pain in my neck glands and a sore throat. The same day I was checked for a yeast infection the doctor looked at my tonsils and said I had tonsillitis. She swabbed it for strep but it came back negative meaning the problem was viral.

One more thing, about a week after treating the yeast infection I woke up one more to what looked like a burst of clear fluid in my underwear. This has only happened once and my doctor said it's from treating the infection that was so swollen and inflamed?

I am convinced I have contracted HSV. However, My doctor and my nurse friend keep telling me they don't think that's the problem. They think if anything the bumps are cold sores (or something I've conjured up with stress....cause I have been a stressed MESS these last few weeks). They think the yeast infection is just a normal thing that I was bound to get, being so young. (I'm 19)

I'm beyond depressed about my situation. I feel like such an idiot. I hate myself so much for what I've done.

I need to know if anyone has experienced these symptoms.

I have a pap smear scheduled in 2 days and plan on addressing the issue once more.

I just wish this was a nightmare that I could wake up from.

Have you had any sort of blood test? An iGG type-specific serological blood test?

You should also call to ask what is taking the swab so long.

I was told you have to wait 3 months after the time of infection before blood test for the most accurate results. Is that incorrect?

For the MOST correct positive results, yes. But most people seroconvert within 4-6 weeks.

I don't want to scare you but it sounds like your doctors are just being stupid. Admittedly, herpes can be hard to diagnose at times because it gets mistaken for many other things (such as yeast infections and other bacterial infections). As soon as my doctor spotted something she thought might be herpes, she put me on antivirals. My tests haven't come back yet but I'm convinced I have it at this point. At least they can give you a sample..it's not going to hurt anything.

If the swab test isn't working (because they do get messed up easily), I would take a blood test or try to find a doctor with another opinion. Or at least really drive home the fact that you are worried it is herpes and explain ALL the symptoms. You can even tell them about the sexual experience if you feel comfortable. Some doctors just don't have experience with HSV and have a harder time addressing it.

I know I am having the worst yeast infection ever as a result of herpes (though this isn't the first time I've had an infection). The only difference is I DEFINITELY have bumps in my genital region. Really scared of also getting cold sores though because the guy I think gave it to me..I also gave him oral :( Despite everything, you should try to remain calm because stress really makes it worse. I know that sounds impossible (trust me I am bugging too!) but in the long run it will help you. Also try boosting your immune system in the meantime so your body can fight off whatever is attacking it faster.

Oh and one last thing (sorry this is so long!) even if you find you don't have herpes, you might want to take a long break from sex. I made the mistake of having sex less than a month after getting over a different STI. And I shouldn't have for many reasons...one because I was infected again, and also because it irritated my previous condition...as it seems with your experience. Best wishes and hang in there!

Hi,

Hi,

I got your point, but I think u should again go to the doctor's and do all the check up's. This will help you in understanding what kind of problem you are having.

if they think the bumps are cold sores, ... cold sores ARE herpes. Same thing. Do they not know this? Some doctors and nurses are clueless, just like most of the population seems to be about this.

Yeast can be a normal thing to get, but it does appear often with herpes outbreaks. And sometimes the outbreak changes the flora of the vagina, and it can be very damn hard to get rid of the yeast problem. I've had this problem for a year, and so has my friend. I have type 2, she has type 1.

I went to my doctor's once again and showed her the bumps on my lips because I had only given her a description over the phone. She said that she's worked in sexual health for years and that if they were herpes that would be the first case she's seen them looking like this. My nurse friend told me they are definitely not cold sores/herpes because they haven't opened up or wept or anything.

As for the yeast infection, it's been lingering and it's still a little bit painful...4 weeks later. I think part of it is due to the fact that I haven't been taking the greatest care of myself. (eating poorly, drinking alcohol on weekends, etc..)

I mentioned a blood test to my doctor and she said that they often don't do them because they are inaccurate and they often come back positive as most of the general population has been exposed to some form of herpes. I asked her about the type of test that distinguises between HSV 1 and 2 and she had to leave the room to ask her colleagues about it, come back and told me once more they don't do those tests. I know now I should be getting another opinion because clearly I'm not getting any answers other than "it doesn't LOOK like herpes".

My doc prescribed me anti-depressants and anti-anxiety pills because my obsessing has become such a problem.

Also, the walk-in-clinic hasn't called me back about my mouth swab. I called them on day 9 (and it's now day 12) and they said results haven't come back yet but that they will soon. This is so frustrating...

Hello,

I had what i thought was a four month ob, but it wasnt it was a severe yeast infection which has caused my skin to rupture. If it was herpes, it would tend to be sore and the spots would be tender to touch. I posted it on here and one of my responses gave me a list and pictures of what natural spots and things are like down there, and honestly it was all natural, i was just paranoid, although i had had an ob at the beginning. I think if you look too hard you begin to think things are more severe than they are and think everything small lump is a herpes sore. My doctor and sexual health nurse said it was definately not a typical herpes case if it was and after a case of antibiotics the rash went and ive been fine.

If you're looking to get answers...I would go and get a type specific IGG blood test done. You can actually google "std testing" and numerous sites will come up. I actually used a lab called Any Lab Test Now. I found it online and they happened to have a lab in my area. But there are other sites that work with different labs and you can simply go and get tested without going to a doctor. Most of these labs do use type specific testing...Herpeselect.

Also, if you're not going in to see your doctors within 24-48 hours of getting sores, lesions, bumps, etc., your cultures could come back negative. It is important to get swabs taken within the first two days, as to have a symptomn that is not yet in the healing stage.

I myself was in your questioning stage once. I constantly visited message boards and finally received great medical advice from www.ashastd.org. There is a nurse there that has been living with herpes for over 20 years. She always reiterates to go and get a blood test done. And if you can get your lesions swabbed within 48 hours which makes perfect sense.

If you need help finding a facility, let me know what city, state you live in....and I can see what I can find. It's no problem!

Hope this helps...Until Then, Take Care.:)

Hi thanks for the help. The Any Lab Tests doesn't work for me because I live in Toronto. But I found a health centre nearby that will do the test. Hopefully all goes well. Thanks again.

I'm glad you've found a facility that will do the test. Your other doctor was probably talking about the IGM test, which is inaccurate and since most people have some form of herpes (even chicken pox) the test often comes back positive.

But she didn't even know about the IGG type specific tests for types 1 and 2, and that puts up a red flag to get another opinion! I'm glad you have found a place that will do the test. Just make sure it is the correct test. And make sure they test for both types. good luck, and don't worry... regardless of the outcome, you will be ok! :)

I went to the facility that I found and got some info on the IGG blood type specific test. I got a requisition from this same doctor who said this is the very first time any one at my clinic has ever ordered one (go figure). I've given it to the lab to order and it should be in within a couple weeks.

I got results from my pap test back and everything was fine... including no yeast. I'm still in a lot of pain down there though. When I look with a mirror I can see the skin has turned white. I asked for a referral to a gynacologist (which apparently takes a while to be seen) and she gave me more creams to ease the pain. She gave me two bottles of Clotriderm cream... one with a steriod in it to reduce the swelling. As for the bumps on my lips, they are still there. My main issue is the pain though. I can feel it in my buttocks sometimes too. It sort of feels like bruising. As well, I've noticed that every time I drink alcohol (once a weekend) the pain becomes worse. I just want to see a specialist :( and get the blood test and find out what is wrong with me. I've NEVER had any trouble with that area before...no yeast... no BV.. nothing! and my doctor tells me this is the worst yeast infection she has seen. I'm so scared:( and just want the pain to vanish!

I'm so glad you went for a blood test. *The statement that your doctor said about IGG is really familiar. That's how a lot of people are misdiagnosed b/c they aren't testing correctly. Just think how many people have gotten tested there and they didn't make sure IGG was tested for. SCARY!!!!!!!

Try to hang in there until your results come in. After that you can proceed with your treatment. Whether or not it is herpes.

If the doctor said this is the worse yeast infection seen, why wouldn't they have given you an antibiotic of some sort. Cream doesn't do it always. I had to take pills for 10 days with my yeast infection. It was bad as well. Its what triggered an outbreak for me.

Let us know what your results say....I'm not one to say its herpes, just b/c something crazy is going on down below. I'm going to wish its not herpes =)

Until Then...Take Care!!!

thanks so much for your well wishes! and yes she did give me an antibiotic.. diflucan.. it worked and the yeast infection was almost non-existant until i drank a lot of beer on new years... then it was a full blown monster. it felt like i had bruised my bum REALLY badly and it hurt to sit on it. but anyways..

I also called back about my mouth swab (about the bumps on my lips that won't seem to budge) and it came back negative for herpes. But I see that doesn't mean much since those tests aren't very accurate. A friend of mine said she's gotten very similar bumps on her lips when she was super stressed... which I am.. my period actually stopped due to my stress (and I'm not pregnant.. i checked lol). She said that the bumps were there for about 2 months and didn't do anything.. then eventually disappeared (who's to say those aren't herpes-related though.. who knows?). People have been telling me that my symptoms may all be stress-induced and not herpes-related...and maybe so. But then I hear some similar symptoms people with HSV have experienced which gives me a cause for a concern. Oh well, I think my main priority right now is to eliminate the stress...it's like a poison to the human body.

Stress can make us pay TOO much attention to every little thing =) Stress can mess up your menstrual cycles, I second that!!! I was so stressed, I caused the small fibroid I had to multiply is size...ended up having to have surgery last year.

Take my advice and TRY to stop looking at your body so close until you get your blood test back. Also, please try and not compare your symptomns with anyone else's. It is different for everyone.

Also, I had to do this a few weeks ago...stay OFF herpes sites =) I know it sounds strange. But sometimes reading more about something, causes more panic and stress. Give your mind a vacation.

thanks so much for your positivity .. I admit when I first read your last post, I left the site, listening to your advice. It has certainly made me feel a little better. I am still waiting on my blood test results. I took it 2 months after my possible exposure.. is that really inaccurate, even though I have been experiencing symptoms?

Breakouts meaning zits? My mouth is also red, especially on the edges. I keep getting zits around my mouth and my top lip is constantly chapped. i too am starting to get the nerve pain in the butt. i also have redness on the penis and white peeing skin. what else could affect those areas other than herpes? What coincidentally affects the mouth, penis, and anus after sex that is not herpes?

Hey Littleoscar,   Welcome. Did you just decide to completely avoid the search? Was it a mental block, the severity of the symptoms, or some combination?

My boyfriend at the time had a sore on his groin that looked like an ingrown hair. He slept with a girl who got hsv2 from another guy. The other guy has only had the one outbreak like me. The girl just recently had her second outbreak. I got bloodwork done about a month and half after the sore appeared. This guy I just disclosed to, how do I fix this?
    • Joey1987
Awesome! So glad to hear it. If this protocol from Biogetica fails, that is going to be my next option. SO far Im on my second month with no OBs and no antivirals, which is huge for me. I also dont like to use the word "cured" but its definitely helping!
    • Joey1987
Well I have received their protocol for the last 2 months, wired them money via paypal, and they have always sent me the products. And Im on my second month no OBs and no antivirals....so something is obviously working. Did it "cure me? I doubt it. But it has definitely helped!
