Understanding test results

I wanted to receive an explanation regarding my recent lab results. HSV IGG = Negative and HSV IGM = Positive. Based on on these results my doctor stated that I was recently infected/exposed. However, I have read material stating the opposite conclusion. Thus, I am confused whether my results imply an old exposure or new exposure? Moreover, I have no noticable symptoms

Thanks,

jason
