witch hazel and tips i found for relief during OB

25 posts in this topic

I was recently diagnosed and my first OB was torture I couldn't believe this was going to be a regular occurrence.

Understandably when I recently noticed my second outbreak coming on from the stress of finals I freaked out I was scared sh*tless and that stress only brought it on quicker. I went to my doctor and got my anti-viral acyclovir, but did my own homework.

Obviously, drying out the sores is key after hearing about witch hazel I went for it what did I have to lose. It burns slightly but it makes the OB site feel much better afterwards not only that but it has cut my healing time pretty much in half. Witch hazel is a natural astringent and so it dries out the herpes without the sting of rubbing alcohol. It has been a god send this time through. That in addition to vitamin C and l-lysine supplements have made this outbreak extremely manageable. I couldn't be more excited I feel like I found a method to make having herpes hopeful. I suggest it to anyone

Witch hazel tip

Thank you soo much for the tip. I've had HSV II for 20+ years now and rarely have outbreaks, but this tip will come in handy when needed.

OB's each week!!

Can someone give me any suggestions on how to deal with these OBs. Each week I seem to have an OB on a different part of my body.

I am no longer taking any neds because these suppressive drugs made my OB even worst after not having an OB for a good 9 months.

I have been off the neds for about 6 months now so maybe thats the reason but I'm not sure!!

Anythoughts>>

Have you tried taking Olive Leaf Extract? What is your diet like? Stress does make it worse for the record. Do you scratch the obs? My most recent one itched like crazy and I scratched it which made it last longer and I think it might leave a mark :(

Yes, I take Lysine religiously!!! I have not tried vit B tho, but it couldn't hurt.

You can find Olive leaf Extract at your local health food store.

I've recently (in the past month or so) started using witch hazel a lot, too. I'm taking Acyclovir and I think it's finally helping, but I still get itchy feelings and tingles sometimes. Whenever I feel this I just apply the witchy hazel a few times a day. It makes it feel better and it dries the area. It seems like whenever I get all sweaty down there (like when doing yard work) I get itchy and irritated, too. Sometimes I'm not sure if I'm getting an outbreak or not, but I use the witch hazel anyway because it feels good and it won't hurt anything. I just put a little on some toilet paper and put it all over. It burns if you get it inside, though. I always use it after sex now, too, because my skin just feels irritated after all that rubbing and and I'm paranoid it wants to break out. I LOVE the stuff.

Is there any difference between Witch Hazel and Peroxide?

I use Peroxide on my OBs. When doing so, it just fizzles on top of the OB..

i think peroxide is a much harsher product especially if you say it fizzles!! think about it, thats what people use to bleach their hair so it is a veru strong product. but do you find that it works though?

Do they sell witch hazel at regular stores (wal mart, meijer, etc.) or do you have to get it from some kind of health store?

nope- you can get witch hazel anywhere. probably next to the rubbing alcohol.

as far as peroxide goes, it's chemical name is h2o2, which means it has one more atom of oxygen than water does. thats all. I know that when i used to get blood on (ahem) clothing ( :D ) I would put peroxide on it until it stopped fizzing and the blood would come right out. It sort of eats away at the organic material in clothing. I've read that while it kills germs, it is also damaging live skin also, so it's not good to use all too often. Having said that- if it kills this crap.. why not??? lol

any thoughts on using witch hazel daily as a cleaner in hopes of preventing an OB? I've also heard on some websites to open (non genital) sores in the shower to allow the infection to release and heal faster. sound right?

Hi, thanks for this advice. I have tried a lot of things and my lesion doesn't want to dry up and go away. I've had it for four weeks. I'm going to try the witch hazel.

I hadn't had an outbreak in 18 years!!!

When I was in the hospital having my son 18 years ago I had a lesion and the only thing the doctor gave me was a fan to dry the lesion up. It worked. So today that is what I'm doing and it seems to be working again!

Take care!

I tried witch hazel and it stung the crap out of my sores. I can't tell if it's helped or not. I was using both peroxide and wh. I've had an anal sore for almos 3 months now. Nothing is working for me :( I thought finally it was heeling with the WH but then I got another outbreak. I even take 2000mg of lysine a day. I've upped it to 3500mg today.

A very convenient way to apply witch hazel is to purchase Tucs Wipes for women. They have witch hazel in them and even though they are kind of tiny they should do the trick. Just another option :)

This thread is crazy lol. Only because before I got diagnosed I bought some witch hazel thinking I was irritated and swollen from intercourse. then I thought "well I bought that for nothing". And now I know I bought it with my "psychic powers" lol

I'm about to try witch hazel tonight!

Its my first OB and only in/around the anus, but its horrific, one big mass of bleeding ulcers and blisters, looks like something out of a worst case scenario in a medical textbook.

My only concern is that if the witch hazel dries it out and the OB scabs over, will the scabs crack when I go to the toilet, this causing more pain?

I'm going to try it anyway, I've been using zovirax cream but I'm on Valaciclovir from my doctor anyway so I'm thinking drying it out seems to be the general consensus on these forums.

I've got some lignocaine 5% gel too so its not so painful to go to the toilet. I just couldn't hold on any longer this morning and I almost passed out from the pain!

Now i have a small blister on my forearm

I'm 25 I was recently diagnosed about 6 months ago with hsv2. Looking for people who are going through the same thing.
    • MistressRaina
I'm somewhat in the same boat.  My igg came back positive hsv2 at greater than 5. I can't pinpoint when I got it either,  since what I'm thinking my obs are were originally confirmed as shingles,  though I haven't had an ob of that since 2013. I can't remember when they started popping up,  or who I would have gotten it from,  but I've been in a monogamous relationship with my husband of almost 7 years.  I don't know how to tell him either,  since he hasn't had any symptoms that I'm aware of. But you're right,  it is what it is, and since we've been living with it for so long,  and it hasn't had much of an impact on our lives,  we just continue on. I'm glad I know as well,  though I'm still pissed my Dr ran the igm without my knowledge and without symptoms, she crossed the line a bit there,  plus the bedside manner of her nurses when they called and told me about the igm really pissed me off even more, and it took her almost 2 weeks to finally agree to run the igg that I asked for. But stuff happens,  and life goes on.

Ok, I summoned up the courage to call the testing facility for my blood work results. Positive for HSV2, IGG showed 4.02.  Negative for HSV1.  The person I spoke with said this means I've had HSV2 for greater than 90 days.  Does that make sense? I was really hoping for a negative, ha. Or positive for HSV1 since that seems to be the winning one to have if you get the virus.  But of course that wouldn't happen for me.  As I think back on my history over the last couple of years, I really think I've had this for sometime just never paid attention to what was happening. Couple of thoughts: -Obviously I've been living with this virus for some time and it hasn't impacted my life in any way and I will focus on it continuing to be this way.  I'm not dying. My ob's seem to be very mild and minimal (I am so thankful for this and I'm sorry to those that experience terrible ob's). -I'm relieved I found out because I'm able to be more aware of my body and my relationships -I'm scared having the talk with the man I've been casually sleeping with for the last 1 and several months. I'm not even sure how to bring it up but I know I have to.   - I'm glad that I wasn't infected by the man I had unprotected sex with in June, though. Mostly because he is a really terrible person.  -I don't want this but it is what it is.  -Ella Dawson is my new hero and I think we should all be like her.  hugs to us all and please feel free to comment. I'd love to talk more about trying to pinpoint when I may have been exposed.

I gave him blowjob last time and swallowed his semen, after 2 days, I feel like I got tonsilitis. I feel afraid.

Well, western labs will only show if things are VERY advanced (far along).  Based on the general articles they've released on the drug, it seems like you really have to go overboard with it and go overboard consistently for a while.  Not that I know but I've read accounts from people who were in the prtilivr trial that raved about how amazing it was. What I would do is sit and meditate for a little.   And take a dose... sit and meditate.. or just sit in silence and see if you can observe any changes. For lab values, I'd be looking at creatinine (health of kidney), liver enzymes (ALT / AST), and do a general CBC. If creatinine levels increase in the blood then there's some insult or damage to the kidney bc it can't adequately eliminate it from the body.    ALT/AST are liver enzymes and the increase in ALT represents a liver insult/issue. CBC, it'd be good to get a reference point to compare things with. The tests are pretty straight forward, if something is wrong then they'll be highlighted as outside of normal value... but mostly you'll see WNL (Within Normal Limits). Aside from that, do a little health assessment of yourself. -How are your bowel movements?  Loose, solid, well formed, clay colored? like big pellets or a solid piece?
      -How's your sleep?
-Urination? - how many times ~ do you go a day?  Color?
      -Any musculoskeletal pains?
-Any unusual pains, aches or sensation anywhere?
-Heart palpitation?  - this means being able to hear your heart beat.  palpitations run a spectrum of subtle to pounding out of the chest.  They're good to note.  Do you wake up with heart palp, mid day, evening...
-Vision?  Any floaters, sensitivity to light?
      -Dry mouth?
you see where I'm going with all of this. I think you'll be able to tell if something is going on or not.

You really need to educate yourself about stds and pregnancy.  Firstly research on this website and talk to someone like your mother.  If you are worried about pregnany use birth control or condoms.  Your dr is not very informed about herpes.
    • Lisajd
First of all you must go and get properly diagnosed either by a swap if you still have the blisters all your needs to get a blood test in 3 months time from infection.  Your ex may get a blood test and it may show up negatives if it is also within the last 3 months of infection.  You do need to know whether you have genital HSV 1 or type 2 because that's important in terms of transmission and symptoms going forward.  You are right you will get there in time and the beating yourself up is not going to help you.   we do things for a reason.  they aren't always the right reasons but we do them anyway because sometimes we need to feel accepted or wanted or whatever.  I am 49 years old and I have had quite a lot of unprotected sex and in my world no-one ever talked about herpes.   And of all the people I believe I got herpes from was a pilot so go figure about not being sensible.   It is difficult not to be hard on yourself and I constantly have to pick myself up about that and say you can't change what happened and you need to let go of the past because it will only impact on your future but please go and get tested just so that you know what you are dealing with because it's important going forward when you have to disclose particularly

Its not so much what you do and  don't eat. it is really about your immune system and that comes with overall health and wellbeing.  I am really fit and eat pretty healthily and have rarely been sick my entire life and my first outbreak was sweet nothing. and in the last year from diagnosis i had 2 spots 6 months apart.  And the reason why I had an outbreak because my immune system took a beating.  I eat all the things that I should not eat in moderation of course.  The inadvertent worry wont help.  I had a friend of mine who was on antivirals she had surgery which caused complications and she had an outbreak and it lasted weeks so don't just focus on the fact that you taking antiviral because you need to still consider your overall health and wellbeing.
