Warren's Theory about your body not building antibodies if on supressive therapy?

Recommended Posts

LivingLife77

I have been on and off Valtrex or Famvir for 6 months plus now....and testing negative. Warren told me to get off all antivirals and then test in 4 months. Yes, she is an expert but not an actual Doctor. The doctors have told me that the tests can still pick up antibodies if you are on antivirals or they would affect it not enough to change test results. I tried to go off it and went back on because I was about to have an oral outbreak. I took my FV and the outbreak was decreased in duration. I am too scrared to go off of it just so I can "test" positive. Any thoughts?

I was off of Valtrex but switched to a different med. I did not feel good taking this med because I continued to get OBs. So, I decided to stop taking them fully. Six months had passed without incident. The 7th month first Ob in 6 months! Then another formed. I was going crazy! So I used this cream (DMSO) and it helped but the OBs continued until I went to my Dr. and he prescribed Valtrex. WoW! What a relief! My point! Please do what’s healthier and in your best interest!!

I guess I'm not an expert on it but I don't think taking valtrex keeps the the herpes from coming up positive in the antibody test. Antiviral drugs just keep the virus from appearing on the skin but it doesn't change the fact to your body has been exposed to the virus and thus you should have the antibodies for the virus. Did you test for hsv1 and 2 or just for one of those? I'm confused.

i read somewhere that taking suppressive medications while trying to test for herpes can affect the test...so try going without for awhile and use lysine , multi vitamen for awhile and then gt tested again

negative test - positive OB

I've been on supressive for 2 years. Everytime I try to go off I have an OB but it just has gotten workse over the 2 years I have been on them. I had 3 negative swabs during this time even though clearly is is herpes.

I think the supressives do change the test results and I'd give my right arm to go 6 months wothout a break out. I get them 2-3 times a month now but I can't seem to stop taking the Zovirax. (Was Valtrex and Acyclovir) I've oftem wondered if my liver is failling because I've just taken so many for so many OB's. I'd listen to your doctor but follow your gut. You know what's best for you.

If you are taking anti-viral drugs its highly unlikely you will get a positive swabs. Swabs are not very sensitive in general and the anti-viral drugs lower the viral load at the skin. If you need a swab done you should discontinue the drugs for some time (weeks) before getting a culture. PCR would be more sensitive but can still be fouled up by the drugs.

Zovirax and Acyclovir are the same drug zovirax is simply the brand name.

Suppressive treatment with acyclovir has been prescribed for many years and at this point some people have taken it for 12 years without incident. I doubt any harm has come to you after only two years but if you are worried a very standard blood test your doctor can do can confirm proper liver and kidney function.

Suppresives

Shouldn't mess up your lab results for an ENTIRE Year. This is just Warren's theory which my doctor doesn't share. I do believe you should be off antivirals a bit --a few weeks to get a PCR but WHY? So you can suffer for several weeks? So I can find out I have HSV-1? At some point you just have to live life. I am going to go off for 2-3 weeks before WB but that is the end of this quest. After that it just becomes insane.

Give it a try and report back to us. It's pretty safe vaccine approved by the FDA.

Have you tried changing your GP surgery? A decent doctor must surely realise that having back to back outbreaks warrants long term suppressive medication.  Aciclovir is available at very low cost to the NHS. I'd be firm with your doctor in what you'd like to do and make it clear you are educated on the relevant issues.  Don't be ashamed to talk to your GP. It is confidential.  FYI - walk in sexual health clinics (separate health record) are only as allowed to dispense a limited amount on the basis of episodic treatments.

I agree, herpes doesn’t show up as discrete little dots like your pic.

@Kurdt01Thank you! Very validating! And yes many doctors are so uninformed and misinformed it's incredibly frustrating.  ur right in multiple forums I've seen commenters invalidate someone's experience with herpes which is so weird. There's a wealth of experiences similar to both of ours but people put their hands to their ears and drill home "herpes is just a minor rash outbreak, nothing more."

I got the zinc acetate from an pharmacy in my town, they can't sell reagents but I know the pharmacist. I cost me about 10 € a 50 gr bottle, enough for a decade at the current rate of consumtion. Otherwise it is quite easy to get, you can buy it from a laboratory or even in ebay. I apply the treatment on my glans about 2-3 times a week, I've never had any problem or adverse effect so far.
