Deep tissue massage causing outbreaks?

I just got this wonderful deep tissue back massager for Christmas and I used it quite a bit for my constant stiff back. It felt great and helped me sleep but just yesterday afternoon, an outbreak popped it's ugly head. I'm wondering....could a deep tissue massage/massager cause an outbreak since the virus (genital herpes) resides in the ganglia or spinal cord? I probably over did it a bit on my lower back and I'm thinking the stress or constant pressure may have caused the virus to wake.

Does this sound reasonable? It could be coincidence but I take meds for the virus and haven't had an outbreak in almost a year.

I am actually wondering if me trying to massage my lower back and knots in my upper glutes is what may have triggered my last outbreak. And there's a girl on here saying that she is actually trying to use a muscle stimulator over her lower back to cause the virus to be active and then kill it with the antivirals- and the electronic stimulator gave her a bad outbreak so ... I think you might be right. I am going to ask about this in another section of the forum, I think this one is too general.

Yes, unfortunately. I may stick to massaging my upper back only.

It would make absolute sense to me that if you stimulate blood flow to the part of your body where the virus resides, it would make it more active.

I'm a qualified massage therapist, while the massage shouldn't directly cause a ob, there is something known as a healing crisis that can occur a few days following a massage, this is not an exact science, I wonder as impurities and toxins leave the systems whether this may or may not cause a outbreak in some. Part of after care advise to a client. Is they may feel unwell tired after a treatment,

I had a back massage done the day before yesterday, DEEP TISSUE and specifically on this demon knot I have that burns and stings right next to my spine in my upper back (the massage was amazing.) I haven't had a massage or an outbreak of oral herpes in years so I was very surprised last night when I saw a big cold sore spring out of nowhere and land on my lip! I remembered learning that the dormant virus resides in the nerve cells in our spine and it made me think that all that stimulation probably caused it to creep out of hiding and make a home in my face for the next couple weeks. VERY weird, like I said I haven't had a cold sore or a massage in years and the day after I get a massage I have an outbreak? VERY FISHY!

Note that the virus does not reside in the spine at all, but in the nerve ganglion behind your ear.

I suggest a more plausible explanation is that the stress you are under requiring the massage has interrupted your immune/virus balance. Conditions that lead to an outbreak are often in train for a few days.

Like the rest of you, I had a deep tissue massage yesterday and woke up this morning with the first cold sore I’ve had in years.

The massage was one of the firmest deep tissue massages I’ve ever had. He worked on on my problem area— rhomboids and traps (it was painful), and then worked on my lower back and knots in my glutes and hips.   Afterward, I felt drunk ish (a common feeling after a massage for me) and my voice was noticeably lower. Not sure what that has to do with it. My voice sounded kind of like someone who’s been home sick with a cough. Again, no idea what that means or if it matters.

moral of the story— I have a huge fever blister after many years (8?) without one the day after an intense deep tissue massage.

Hi @Blekk it is important to note that the reasons why you went for the deep tissue massage in the first place is the most likely underlying cause of the outbreak. Did the massage stimulate your body in a way that contributed to an outbreak... possibly... would the outbreak have happened without a massage... possibly.

Hi "Jeremy"..... I agree, the topic of your HSV status does not need to be something you disclose too soon in a developing relationship..... get to know each other first....see how it's going and as it progresses, then the HSV issue will naturally need to be revealed.... it's my personal opinion though that before there is any sexual encounter you ought to disclose your HSV status.... I know some will disagree with me on this but, I think it is morally wrong not to disclose first.  This can be a make/break situation for most people but, again, I feel it is simply wrong not to give the other person the whole story since your decision not to disclose could put their health at risk.... that is simply not an option in my opinion.  Looking back to my "pre-HSV" life I most certainly would want my partner to disclose their HSV+ status before intimacy so that I could make my decision as to whether I want to take that risk or not....

Thanks, CHT. I appreciate the feedback. The whole trauma of going through this has led me to figure out a lot about myself and my attachment wounds, so I'm taking courses to come out of this better. This girl really was my dream woman in so many ways, it's been the hardest heartbreak to deal with ever. I'm truly in a lot of pain, but using the pain as fuel to launch that new business and work with coaches. I also opened up to my family about HSV, so my parents and sister know now, and they were very loving and accepting of it. Since opening up about it, I feel way better around this thing. After opening up, I also found out that some mutual friends in our family have discordant couples who are married with children, so HSV hasn't stopped them from living a loving life. The thing is... all of these couples I mention did not disclose until 6-8 months into the relationship. So now I'm thinking it might be better not to disclose until I know things are very serious. I'll of course stay on the medication and use protection, but maybe this is a better route than disclosing upfront and scaring women off.

Hey @Lcj987 and welcome to the website. You can be sure that isn't HSV-2, looks nothing like it. It is much more likely to be folliculitis or inflamed fordyce spots.

Hey @JackThrowAway herpes causes an outbreak where it enters the body first and maybe a progressive spread. If it doesn't cause an outbreak at the entry site then it won't cause one elsewhere, it also won't 'jump' upon infection - it would be more likely that the lesions are continuous from the penis to the anus. Nevertheless, testing trumps symptoms or any interpretation of symptoms. The correct conclusive result arises when: you have a positive swab; or An IgG HSV-2 level over 3.5 (Herpeselect test).

Slept with someone unprotected, roughly 2 weeks ago now. I felt generally unwell the couple of days after but I’d been drinking the whole weekend and didn’t have much sleep either of the days of that weekend so put it down to that. 6 days after I noticed these spots appear on the shaft of my penis. Along with symptoms of discomfort in my shaft in the couple of days prior to them appearing. No pain when urinating at all that I have noticed. They don’t hurt, itch or tingle and they don’t have fluid in from what I can see or feel if I squeeze them and have never burst? I went to a sexual health clinic to get checked up, they took bloods to do a full test and looked at the spots but said they saw nothing that concerned them but I’m not sure about that, any advice? The smaller spots under the shaft are just follicles I had diagnosed years ago and non-sti related.
