Treatment for cold sore on lip

I got my first cold sore in years on my lip on Wednesday night. I felt it tingling and there was a tiny bump. I couldn't remember what worked well so I asked some friends. I ended up using abbreva, banadyne-3 and carmex all throughout the day. I also put lipstick on it a few times to mask it. I'm sure that was a big no-no. I definitely think I went overboard withe the treatments. I probably should have just left it alone but I work at a hospital and was worried it would worry the patients. It's been 5 days and it's still there, it's smaller but it's still red and blistered. I'm planning on just leaving it alone.

For future OBs, what's the best thing to do? The banadyne seems to dry it out which I believe is the objective.

Apply carmex everyday before you go to bed and always keepp some around when your lip begins to tingle.
