Excruciating first breakout, help

So I went to the doctor and got tentatively diagnosed (waiting on test results) with le herp. I'm in what I hope to be the middle of my first outbreak...and it is unbeleivably painful. The main culprit for the most intense pain is an ulcer like lesion right next to my vaginal canal. I've been taking ibuprofen around the clock (which takes a bit of the edge off), taking Epsom salt baths daily, and the doc gave me some lidocaine gel today. Note: lidocaine gel works for maybe an hour and burns like all hell when first applied.

Anybody have good remedies for incredibly painful genital herpes? Also, any input on how long it takes the valtrex to start making a noticeable difference? (generally that is, I know that everyone is different)

sorry

Aw, feel really sorry for you. My first OB was awful!!!!! It does get better and other obs are much less than the first.

I put aloevera gel on lots...put it in the fridge if u need some cooling action. I also mix aloevera gel with grapeseed oil and mellisa oil.

There is loads of ideas on the right. Tea tree oil is good too, make sure u dilute it with a carrier oil first though.

Have you started taking vitamins too ?

Hey gossamer- I am going through my first outbreak too and it is very painful. I dread having to use the bathroom because it burns so bad when I urinate. What my doctor suggested and helps a little is pouring water on your vagina when urinating, as it relieves some of the stinging. I will probably keep 2 bottles of water in my purse with me at all times for now. Best of luck :)

I feel ya. I'm still in the middle of my first OB...Day 9...but luckily 90% of the pain was gone yesterday. Probably 95% gone today. For the first week it so painful I could barely move....it hurt even to lay still in my bed the wrong way (certain sensitive parts resting on certain other sensitive parts). The sores are finally starting to clear up...very slowly though. Been on Valtrex for 4 days now. Starting to itch as it heals, and still pretty uncomfortable down there, however sooo much better than before.

Just hang in there. Honestly, not much I did could make the pain better except taking several shots of vodka (no lie) haha....which i'm sure wasn't great for my immune system but I just couldn't take it anymore, and it at least helped me get a good nights rest. Tried everything from ibuprofen, to dermoplast anesthetic spray. Nyquil/Dayquil seemed to help a bit too.

Not to directly promote anything illegal...but I'm sure a little "medical" marijuana couldn't hurt either to take the edge off. If I was able to move enough to pick some up I would've given that a shot myself.

:)

Thanks so much for your response everyone, I will definitely try the aloe vera! I just cant WAIT for this to be over, or at least a little less painful. I definitely tried the alcohol thing too (read, entire bottle of wine...OOPS) which certainly helps for the night. I'm going to try to abstain though and see if my vagina will stop trying to commit suicide. It's funny, the diagnosis didn't really traumatize me that much, but if the pain doesn't lighten up...I might just light the organ on fire. ;)

Good luck, all you wonderful people

And boopboop: started vitamins yesterday after I had convinced myself that I had the big H. Lysine, multivitamin, vitamin c, and eichenecia. Any other key ingredients? Also making a habit of eating as much broccoli as possible, might just turn into the new & improved, herpes infected green giant! :D

i also take korean ginsing. Was on the vits the first two months and only had a minor ob..hardly felt it. Then mysecond only had a few blisters but it was the thrush that went with it that was reallly annoying!! Stopped taking vitamins a month ago and now have a awful ob so back on the vitamins and healthy eating!

When i was diagnosed I basically bought a herpes kit lol.

epsom bath salts

mellisa oil, tea tree oil

aloe vera gel

korean ginsing

vit c

lysine

kelp!!!

I carry around a small tub of mellisa oil mixed with grapeseed oil and aloevera gel...any sign of a ob a smear it on..just feels like lube!

Also if your bits are sore when sleeping put a pillow between...gives it some air too!

Hey Gossamer! I was diagnosed about a month ago and literally cried every day because of the pain throughout my first outbreak. My solution? Ibuprofen and water, water, water. Keeping your body well hydrated helps it heal itself faster :) I was also lucky enough to get prescribed Acyclovir, which helped A LOT. If you're afraid of someone finding out, tell them it's for coldsores, that's what I did :o I'm a college student so these are simple and uninvasive little cures for the annoyance of H. Best of luck to you and I promise it gets better!

boopboop- I love your Herpes kit! I will have to look into all that :) Do you know anything about garlic supplements? I'd rather not eat whole garlic (supposed to fight viruses really well), but the supplements work just as well.

hmm can get garlic capsules, used to take them, try to include it in your cooking maybe... ive not had a good meal with garlic in ages!

Eating healthy really helps...thats m new years resolution ...used to be pretty much vegetarian and cared about what i ate...then got a new bf and things went downhill in the food department, plus stress and a holiday and too much alcohol and voila herpes!

Take time to reflect on yourself, cry when u need to...i bawled my eyes out some nights!, think about where you go from here and make herpes a positive step into your future because uv already caught it! Thats in the past...no point dwelling just have to prepare yourself for obs and looks after yourself... it should make you a more healthier person that in more intune with your body...am still working on that!

I loveee garlic :). I hear you about eating poorly with a bf. But I really need to take back control on eating well, because I know poor food choices can directly affect that. The last three days I have done nothing but reflect and cry lol. Thinking about where I go from here seems pretty daunting. I am just trying to take it day by day for now (especially since I'm still in my first OB and I can't really get past it). Great advice :)

Also best way to think about it is your body is just giving you a lil warning with the herpes.... telling you to be healthier, make the right choices for you, find someone you really trust and love and overall really love yourself.

First OB is pretty bad, just give yourself sometime to sit in bed, watch films, take epsom bath salt baths (i got more delivered today :) ) read, reflect and make some plans for the future...herpes won't change any path that was really meant for you all along...

If it hurts to go to the bathroom, take a plastic cup and press it against your vagina and just urinate it there. Of course, place the cup above your cuts/lesions. It helps a lot and it doesn't get on the cuts. Just do it in the shower though so that you can still have water traveling in that area from the back. that's just what I did to use the bathroom.

as for the pain... I couldn't find anything to help with the pain. but my outbreak did hurt badly for 10 days and now it's healing up and I can finally potty like a normal person again!!!

boopboop and panda28- great advice to both. I've been taking a bottle of warm water and washing it down there when I pee. And I like that about my body warning me about herpes. I am a very stressed person and I can use my herpes as like a measure for my stress. No one should be stressed to the point that their body is freaking out on them. Thanks :)

I love marijuana and have smoked everyday all day for the past fifteen years since I was 13. If you are even a touch depressed about your situation then leave the weed alone until you have coped with the fact that this is what you have now. Being high didn't stop the itching but it does take your mind off it for an hour or 2.

Hi, I read your post and can hear your pain. My daughter is experiencing her second outbreak (of mouth sores). I am not sure how to post a new thread... so excuse my ignorance.... I am trying to learn how to use this site.

I feel so helpless (to help her). Doctors do not seem to understand the devastating effect this can have. She is a senior in college and struggling to get through finals while feeling humiliation! Thanks for listening (reading).

Let's try to help each other. Take care.

Hey @WilsoInAus ok thank you, I will do my best to move on and stop trawling forums haha.

Hey @sgt98 but there is no feasible infection or outbreak to suppress and antivirals do not suppress an initial outbreak in any event
    • sgt98
Thanks @WilsoInAus I understand apologies for this but the only other thing I am worried about is that I did take a course of Famvir on day 1 as I felt like I was having an outbreak of cold sores and am worried that has suppressed the initial outbreak genitally

Hi @sgt98 it is not feasible to obtain a HSV-2 infection from receiving oral sex - only HSV-1 is feasible but you've already got that and immunity from any further infection with HSV-1. You do not need any further tests for HSV. You're feeling regret, try to forgive yourself and calm down, let the rational take over. You know the answer here and it won't be long until you believe it too.

Hi @NerdP423 and welcome to the website. You raise a lot of points and I think the best way to address your concerns is add some comments at each key point. I've copied your note again below and added these comments in square brackets. I appreciate any insight (even speculation) as to what has been going on with me. I'm a 37y/o M. I last was intimate with a new partner on 2/11/2022, and a few days later started having a huge amount of discomfort in my face. [The first thing that happens though is that herpes causes lesions or at least some skin based disruption. Other symptoms are then related to the actions of the immune system responding to the virus. Without lesions, it is highly questionable that the ailment is related to herpes, yet testing is useful if you have concerns as you have done so.] About a month after that [herpes causes issues within days, if the first 'symptoms' are a month later - its extremely unlikely they are related to herpes], significant discomfort downstairs, however every test I have ever taken for HSV 1 and 2 has been negative. Here are the details: Face: Previously, some significant tingling and itching on the right side of my mouth, lips and chin (still there, but milder) [herpes does not cause general tingling and itching, it can cause a reasonably concentrated feeling of itch/throb from which a herpes lesion appears within hours]. Occasional hot flashes near my right eye, cheek and ear [herpes does not do this, it may be a immune response to something, or stress]. Sometimes it will feel like the skin is crawling on the right side of my face [herpes does not cause a general crawling sensation]. Never seen anything that looked like a traditional cold sore [that's extremely telling, even people with associated atypical symptoms will have experienced herpes lesions]. Occasionally, the left side of my face will have a momentary feeling of skin crawling, but it's so mild that I am not really worried about it. Downstairs: Thankfully, most of these are now milder than they were before. Occasional momentary pinch of pain at the base of my genitals. [herpes does not cause a general pinch feeling.] Aching pain in my boxer area (groin, leg folds) [nor this] Occasional feeling of cold in my boxer area, butt, or lower back. ( also in my shins and occasionally even my arms) [nor this] On 4/30/2022, I had been in discomfort for almost two months. I scratched an itch, noticed it hurt, and then checked - I did have an open ulcer down there. Took myself to the ER to get swabbed, came back negative. [If this was a PCR then this will be very conclusive.] Practitioner said it may come back negative because it was already open. However the lab report noted that it definitely didn't look like what you'd expect a typical first herpes outbreak to look like [how would the lab know??]. All blood tests negative so far. I had two western blots, the second one was nine months after exposure. [Two negative Westernblots!!! Many that's real convincing]. All other swabs also negative. I went to urgent care, because I know the timeliness of when the Swab is taken matters. One time, a swab was not done, because practitioner said it was folliculitis and wouldn't swab it (It was at my belt line). [Belt line is highly unlikely to relate to herpes.]   A blood test revealed I had low-ish B12 (technically in range, but at the very low end, especially for a man of my size). I had a series of B12 injections, and I am taking a B12 supplement. I am not taking any lysine or arginine at the moment. I was taking the Arganine to see if I could induce an outbreak. [This is irrelevant, there is no known linkage between herpes outbreaks and arginine/lysine intake - its a myth - and B12 infers nothing.] I think what I am asking is - has anyone here ever repeatedly tested negative over and over again over long period of time, before getting a definitive answer, be a positive test, or something else? [The answer to this is: Extremely few people with a HSV-1 infection and even more rarely HSV-2 test repeatedly negative on Westernblot and actually carry the virus. Of the cases that I know of that had delayed detection by a swab and negative blood tests in the meantime (and that's only 3-4 cases), they had some form of lesions within days of infection but did not obtain a swab for various reasons and then obtained a positive swab of a subsequent lesion with the record being 11 months later. A couple of the cases did have some 'background' symptoms they thought might be related to herpes but that isn't ascertained and some did not have any unusual symptoms at all apart from the lesions. Hence as you did not have lesions around your mouth or lips within days of the last sexual encounter as is exceptionally common for a primary oral HSV-1 infection, that pretty much rules out herpes orally as it is. The fact that you had no genital symptoms for a month also rules out genital herpes. I am not aware of anyone at all who has genuinely gone on to test positive by swab or blood in your specific circumstances. There are hundreds if not more than a thousand experiences on this website alone that are similar to yours that are truly negative for herpes I'm one of them!]
