16, scared and about to get test results!

Hello. This week I've had my first suspected genital herpes outbreak. It is so painful! I haven't got my test results from the DR yet but she was 80% sure it was GH and although I wish I could be in denial I need answers.. How long will my first ob last? I haven't been able to drink for the last 3 days because going to the bathroom is soo painful. I've read a few sites that suggest drying the area with a hair drier which I've done, and have used carmex and a lot of panadol which have all reduced the pain. I'm on valtex as well. Is there anything else I can do? Its too painful to clean. I'm still hopeful that its not GH but I'm aware that the chances are high that it is. Please help me.

Hi Sarah and welcome. I don't have genital herpes (I have oral) but I have read from a few female members on here what they do when they need to pee. The one I mainly remember is getting a plastic squirt bottle and squirting the water into your urine stream as you go. There is one other I read once but I can't remember so I will pm that member and find out for you.

Initial outbreaks can be the worst and also the longest, but everyone is different. Generally speaking they tend to get better over time. There are good numbing agents too that will be able to help you out in the most difficult and painful time of it.

Hi Sarah

That 1st OB is hell!!! I was recently diagnosed July/August & I've just had my 2nd OB. Anyhow, back to 1st OB, I think it lasted 6 weeks or so, if not slightly longer. I had 2 periods during that time............yuck!! I was put onto Valtrex on my 3rd week cos I was still in agony!! I soooooooo wish I'd been put onto it sooner.

I had lots of probs going to the toilet too. I took URAL at one stage cos that makes your urine more alkaline. And yep I was on painkillers too. Drink lots of water even if it means you need to go more often cos that also dilutes your urine.

Other members have suggested, going in the bath. I've also read, sitting backwards on the toilet helps too.

There are ointments available with Lignocaine in them which helps to reduce pain. I couldn't use them because I'm sensitive/allergic to lignocaine.

When I have a shower, I have one of those detachable shower heads, I make sure I wash away any residual soap suds, then I dab dry with toilet paper.

Geez if you haven't had anything to drink for 3 days that's getting rather dangerous, you will be dehydrated & will end up with more probs.

Mega doses of Vit C will help to boost your immune system. L-Lysine is another good one to take.

I hope some of that helps?

hugs.........you will make it!!

xx

Hi Sarah -

Welcome and realize that you're not alone. The first outbreak is the worst, but it should be gone within several

weeks. If it is H, you'll take antivirals, and it WILL clear up. The hardest part is mental and emotional; realize

that it doesn't change anything about you it doesn't mean you did anything wrong.

I'd advise you not to tell your friends at school though; just your family who you trust. Hang in there. Look

at all the people on here and hit us up whenever you need support.

One Love

Thankyou everyone! Your replies have really helped. Going to the bathroom in the shower has been my saviour for the last 2 days.. I'm about to get my period, how will that affect the outbreak?? I went to the beach today so I'm hoping the salt water will help clear it up. I definitely will not tell any friends, I'm lucky to have a close relationship with my mum who is helping me through this. I haven't been to emotional yet, trying to stay strong until I get my test results back. If it is positive, I'm glad there is a site that will give me support and advice. I really hope I don't have to suffer through this for 6 weeks because I'm going to japan in january. Is there any way to speed up recovery?? X

Hi Sarah

It's been my experience that having an OB and one's period at the same time isn't so good. It's like catch 22.....tampons are ok if you have no internal sores otherwise ouch, and of course, pads can't be yuck too. The important thing is to change everything regularly or more frequently than you probably would normally. And of course, remember to wash those hands!!

As far as speeding up recovery?? Just look after yourself for a start, good diet, lots of rest, lots of sleep, limit alcohol, reduce stress [if possible], take Vit C mega doses, L-Lysine, anti-virals, and there's probably lots I haven't included?

hugs

Diagnosed! Hsv-1 I think its called. The oral herpes yet its down stairs??? I'm so upset. The worst thing is I don't know if its from my ex boyfriend who I had sex with a month ago or a boy who I received oral from last week. I know that sounds horrible but I'm honestly not a ****! I can't tell the boy because I don't want the rumour to spread and I almost hope its my ex boyfriend so we can go through this together but can't tell him either incase its not and then he repeats it. Help me! :(

As far as talking to those two boys about it, here's a suggestion.

Work your way backwards. Ask the most recent guy whether or not he ever gets cold sores on his mouth. Chances are good that one or the other (or both) of them does, and that oral sex is the way you got genital HSV1.

So ask him if he does. If he says yes, you can tell him what it can cause. It would be good for him to know that it can be passed by oral sex, because a lot of folks do not know that!

Hugs Sarah & yeah that makes sense that it's GHSV1.

Did you have the swab as well as blood test? It's the only way to know if it's a new - recent exposure or if you've had it for some time?

Given the time frame with both guys it's probably going to be rather tricky knowing which one. And if it's the 1st guy, hopefully you haven't in turn given the 2nd guy OHSV1. Please remember, you weren't in a position of knowing!!

It's probably best just to ask both of them if they get cold sores? If one says yes, then bingo that's probably your guy. And you can just casually just say to them, oh did you know you can give someone Genital herpes via oral sex because you do have cold sores.

Tricky situation...............hugs xx

My ex boyfriend definitely has never had cold sores :s but I know he has been really promiscuous lately..

Does that mean you have never seen a sore on him? Because that doesn't necessarily mean he doesn't have oral herpes.

Even if he has never had a sore he remembers himself, he could possibly have (asymptomatic) oral herpes. About 70% of the people who have herpes don't know it --- because they don't get recognizable symptoms.

My mom got cold sores when she was very young, but has not had one in at least 50 years. She still has oral herpes though. And once a person has it, they can pass it even when there are no visible sores. Just something you need to know.

Since, due to the timeframe, you will probably be unable to pinpoint which guy passed on the hsv to you, it might be useless to even talk to either one of them. Remember that about 80% of everyone over the age of 12 in north America has hsv1 (cold sore type herpes, either dormant or active, usually dormant). If you feel you must inform them, try an anonymous email which you can send from this website. You could let them know that giving oral sex can spread herpes to the genitals, a fact few people know (unforunately).

Remember to drink plenty of water so your urine won't be too acidic. Hope you feel much better soon!

Since Sarah is only 16 and probably hasn't been sexual with very many guys, she is probably able to pinpoint it to just a few possibilities, maybe even just the 2 she has mentioned.

It's a really sad situation that the kids these days do not think of oral sex as actual sex. It is sex, and it can have consequences such as this. If the boys and girls out there knew that, at least they could try to make some better choices, such as avoiding oral sex during an outbreak of oral cold sores.

So my point is, it might be a good idea for her to talk to these little boys about the situation so they can learn. The more kids know about it, the more they will tell others, and so on.

Okay.... makes sense.... I hope it is helping.  Again, I would ask about a Rx for valacyclovir instead of acyclovir.... valacyclovir gets more acyclovir into your system than taking straight acyclovir.

Hi @Throwaway765 yes that all makes sense and you’ve pretty well reached the right conclusions except for a very significant fact!! You are right, receiving genital HSV-2 from oral sex is unheard of, just not feasible given how people have it and whether it actually sheds in infectious quantities or not. Safely rule this out. Now HSV-1; once you have this as you do orally, you have immunity against infection anywhere else on the body, it is also not feasible.  The symptoms you describe are also not related to herpes in the absence of lesions.

Thanks for your response! I received unprotected oral 10 weeks ago and immediately after had stinging in my glans and weird nerve pain. I am positive for HSV1 due to cold sores I got as a child, but as recent as 9 weeks after this exposure have tested negative for HSV2.    im nervous that I may have acquired hsv1 again on my genitals since HSV2 is rarely acquired from oral sex and doesn’t shed hardly at all, but haven’t seen any sores yet. Just weird symptoms and this started recently in my buttcrack when I was taking antibiotics.   Any advice or perspective would be greatly appreciated. @WilsoInAus

Hi @Throwaway765 and welcome. There is absolutely no concern over this being related to herpes. Something must be concerning you as to the possibility of herpes… what is it?
