Dear (MS)

Thank you for contacting me to share your support for increased research on the various strains of the Herpes virus, especially for a cure. I appreciate knowing of your advocacy in this area.

I have long supported federal funding of biomedical research and awareness efforts, including the important work being done at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The 27 Institutes and Centers that compose the NIH are committed to improving the health of the American people by finding causes, treatments, and cures for a number of diseases and by supporting medical institutions throughout the country that seek to advance medical knowledge and understanding. I also strongly support the efforts of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which is recognized as the lead federal agency for protecting the health and safety of people at home and abroad, providing credible information to enhance health decisions, and promoting health through strong partnerships.

The fiscal year 2010 omnibus appropriations bill included about $31 billion for the NIH and around $6.5 billion in funding for the CDC.

As the Senate considers future appropriations to these key agencies, I will have your strong support for funding of Herpes research closely in mind. Thank you, again, for writing to me.

Sincerely,

Richard G. Lugar

United States Senator

RGL/cga

Senator Lugar [senator_lugar@lugar.senate.gov]

MS, thanks. We'll add him to the Change.org petition such that he automatically gets emails. I liked his response, but the proof is in the pudding... Let's see if they'll increase funding. The last time I looked, the NIH spent about 10 million on HSV research. Think about it, if you pick the lower of the 2 numbers and say 50M people have HSV2 in the US, that is 20 cents per person... which is chicken sh!!... How about 10 dollars a person or even 5 - between 250 and 500 million. Imagine what would happen if we could get this kind of funding??

We want a cure just as bad as everyone else who is suffering from an incurable disease. We should be blessed that most likely none of use was born with cancer and fighting for our lives from day one. I don't like the negativity at all and if you think you have it bad try working in a hospital and watching people fight for their lives because of brain tumors, congential heart defects, and the list continues. At least we can wake up every day and not worry about "will today be my last day?" Try meeting a 23 year, younger than me, and listen to their story of being diagnosed with brain cancer because he had prostate cancer with no signs. Literally, battling to stay alive. I do believe finding a cure for herpes is highly important. It has been linked to other serious medical problems and it is emotionally devastating. Our tax dollars are being wasted on antiviral medications due to the herpes virus becoming resistant. I honestly believe a cure will come eventually. Scientist just recently discovered that herpes can most likely be cured. We have to wait and pray that they are right. Until then, we should feel blessed that we are not battling for our lives as of now. Since HSV1 has been proven to lead to Alzheimer's. Lugar can only do so much. By raising awareness means we bring this topic to congress and stress the importance of finding/funding for a cure or even a treatment that prevents outbreaks and/or transmission of the virus. I like Senator Lugar and respect that he or his secretary took a few minutes out of a day to respond to my email. I'm sure my email was one of thousands that was submitted on that day. It was a private email I sent weeks ago. I'm thankful to be alive with a great career and wonderful people surrounding me. I have so much respect for this support group and all the stories because it makes me not feel so alone. So, let's stay positive and keep up that hard work. Nothing comes easy in life for most of us. If you want than work for it.
