Would like to talk to people who have HSV 2 in their mouth and throat

I want to know from people who have it if they get out breaks? What are their outbreaks like? Do they get cold soares too and if pimples on the lip line are part of that? If anyone who as this and is involved with a significant other or spouse and if they have given it to anyone?

I have read the articles and most are about Hsv 2 and below the waist, which doesn't tell about if you have it in your mouth and throat and I would just like to compare notes and ask questions of people who have this where I do and what they do and how they deal with it, etc.

thanks in advance

Oral hsv2 is horrid. When I get obs I see no blisters outside my mouth but the jaw pain is insufferably aweful. It's worse than a needle from the dentist. The whole side of my face from the original ob gets slightly numb but then the shooting pains start and the side of my neck hurts or aches. Flu like symptoms as well. And I feel overwhelmingly tired for weeks after. Nothing helps the pain at all. Not even Valtrex which is supposed to be good at reducing pain. Below the belt it helps but not this. I get no coldsores, and these are not the same thing from hsv2 that I know of. It is another type from genital. It is type 1. I'm glad I don't have that but this is surely the worst thing about having hsv2 for me. Having it orally. UGH

Hi Solnia:

Question for you:

Did you ever get your oral OB's swabbed and typed? It is confirmed Oral HSV2? Because it's extremely rare. Not doubting at all that you have it, I'm just being a Curious George, that's all

:D

Ok George.. hehehe... I never had it typed nor swabbed, but I know enough about genital herpes to be sure of my symptoms. It always seems like these things happen when I don't have time to visit the doctor. Or am in so much pain I can't think straight enought to do anything about it. I take otc painkillers and pray a lot. I know exactly how rare it is and have been told this a 1000 times but I am very sure it is herpes. I'll keep in mind next time symptoms occur to get my bloody a** to the doc without fail. Well, that is if I find a job. Right now I am jobless and on a tight budget till it runs out... or I get said job.

I would get your oral symptoms swabbed as soon as you experience another outbreak.

You will hear very often that oral HSV2 is extremely rare. It IS possible but because HSV2 is predominantly in the genital area, if it is out of its area of preference it tends to lose it's 'punch' just like HSV1 does if it is in the genital area.

I don't doubt your knowledge on Herpes, but the fact that you didn't have it typed but state that you have "Oral HSV2", I would actually question if it may be HSV1 that you have.

I would at least have it typed just to be sure.

And if it *is* HSV2, then it is what it is. :)

Err yeah. From everything I have read I didn't know it was possible to get HSV-2 anywhere but genitals. HSV-1 is the oral type. But then, I am no expert.

I used to work with a doctor who specifically studied the prevalence of oral HSV2 and the transmission rates/recurrence rates of oral HSV2.

He was interested in answering the question as to why people contract HSV2 in the genital or lower part of the body, but do not present with an oral type 2 infection, even though the people report having performed oral sex on the SAME person from whom they contracted genital HSV 2

The conclusion of the research in layman's terms:

A PRIMARY occurrence of oral HSV2 is so rare the it's statisically insignificant. NOT implying that getting HSV 2 in the mouth can NEVER happen.. but it's so rare that anyone with an oral herpes outbreak should not assume it's equally as likey they have type2 as type 1

RECURRENT oral infections: not ONE was HSV 2, every result was HSV1 as typed by cultures, even though the test subjects were CONVINCED they had type 2 oral.

If I were you , I would get a culture. Contrary to popular belief, the two types behave quite differently.

Hi purple668,

I was diagnosed with HSV2+ about six months ago (HSV1 neg blood test). Since then I have been obsessed looking at my genitals with a magnifying glass for any bump, itch, ingrown hair, etc...with no obvious OB sign. Recently, I developed two ulcers inside the right cheek inside my mouth...first I thought it was a canker sore which once in a while I get but this time the sores felt "different"...in any case I just kept a them clean using a swab with Hydrogen Peroxide and it went away in about 7 days. After two more weeks, I have now two small ulcer in the hard part of the gum in the bottom and top of the right side. I thought it cant be HSV since it is supposed to be outside the mouth but researching I found what is called herpetic gingivostomatitis and it looks like what I have....I guess I need to do a swab to be sure but it seems I may have HSV2 in my mouth. I started getting a daily dose of Vitamin C 1g to boost my immune system and I am also trying Lysene as it may (although not proven) help reduce the outbreak duration...Hopefully, if the "experts" are right, and assuming this is HSV2, I should not have that many OB's....I will let you know how it goes! Cheers.

Actually, I was recently reading some website and there were many people who had oral hsv2. The reason it seems so rare is because most people who have oral outbreaks never get them swabbed. They just assume they are the run of the mill coldsore. The same way hsv1 is being transferred to the genitals is the same way hsv2 is being transferred to the mouth. Its like the new epidemic of men getting mouth and throat cancer from getting HPV from performing oral sex on a woman. Having sex is such a joy.

here again

being PERSONALLY involved in the results of LONG-TERM research, HSV2 oral is an extremely rare ocurrence and most likely wont recur.

Peppermintpatty, whew your post give me hope! Thanks! I have just had my mouth swabbed. Lets see the results. I am worried about the number due to the stigma of 2. Not that 1 is a blessing, if I have 1 orally it is awful. We will see!

Hi veryunlucky...i am interested in hearing your story...are you having ulcers inside your mouth or just cold sores in the lips? Are you HSV2 Pos and HSV1 Neg blood tested? Do you know how you could have contracted it?

Mine is as follows:

1) Long term relation -15 yrs (only one parter)

2) During brief interruption in relation and after too much alcohol ended up having sex with someone else i met during a visit to friends out of town - first weekend just oral (receiving and giving) and then a week later insertive no protection (yes I know really stupid)

3) A month later, reconcile with long term parter - everything was discussed and forgiven.

4) Decided to get tested for STD/HIV just in case (4 weeks after exposure).........Surprise HSV2 positive!

5) Long term partner got checked too...HSV1 positive but HSV2 neg.

6) Ask the other woman to get checked....a week later replied HSV2 negative.

So here is my dilema...after the HSV2 positive diagnosis (6 months ago) I have not had any obvious OB in my genitals..besides the terrible feeling of having a STD, I have been obsessed looking at my genital and i am now supersensitive to any itch, discomfort, etc...So...I began getting this canker sores in my mouth (read my original message) and I thought well, this should be HSV2 in my mounth....as many of the readers of this forum I started researching and found the herpes forum in Medhelp...I posted a question regarding the possibility of HSV2 and basically the response, similar to peppermint stated HSV2 in mouth is VERY rare and the ulcers in the mouth were due to something else (the doc even ask if I had any other STD)...then I got all stressed when reading about mouth ulcers and HIV...I swear I had all the ARS symptoms..anyway...after 4, 10 and 18 weeks after exposure HIV / all other STD's NEGATIVE now I am conviced I dont have anything else....so either I am so stresssed out that the ulcers are just stress, or I may have indeed HSV2 in my mouth ...or during college (yes i had a few girlfirends) i got infected and for some reason in the last 15 years my long term partner has never being infected nor she has passed her HSV1 to me after so many crazy sex nights, or I really got infected during my party week but have not had any OB in my genitals. It just does not makes sense to me...Anyway, since there seems to be so many different opinions about the oral HSV2, I am just curious about your diagnosis....

Mrroboto,

I have on the past been tested positive for both 1 and 2. I know for a fact where and when I got 2, it was in my early 20's and know what I rarely next to never had issues with the virus until my 40's. But I have recently been infected orally, with 2? maybe? even though U always had been exposed to 1, I guess, I never have had obvious cold sores on my lips. I believe recent stress has brough out the best of this virus in me, and it really sucks. I think a person who has a very good immune system can maybe never have outbreaks, hence possibly you. Maybe way back when you were exposed to this virus (2) but never had issues with it (lucky!). Have you ever had the flu? Maybe way back when, you had the flu, but that was the actual virus and you didn't know it? Could possibly be. You probably have a great immune system. As for your girlfriend and her 1, that is not suprising. I had 1 and never had symptoms of it. So, my advice to you is STOP STRESSING, because stress will activate the whole shabang!

H Sue. I am in a state of constant outbreak it seems.

My symptoms are severe i would say, I get a sore throat, muscle aches, I get chills, and "bone coldness", anal itch and pain, vaginal and anal discharge, itch, and pain. I also get like small sore spots on my tongue. But only one or two actual herpes sores inside!Herpes is much more than a minor "rash" to me!! These are all symptoms I have had, but I don't get every one with every outbreak.

I've been tested for everything and HSV-2 it is.

I've finally conceeded to supressive therapy, I need to. I can't stand it anymore.

I haven't given this hsv 2 to anyone, my hubby gave it to me before we were married, and I knew he had it. I was the one who didn't run away after "the talk".No regrets.

I had both a blood test and the sore on my mouth tested. Because I haven't had it that long, the blood test for the antibodies was negative for both HSV1 and HSV2. However, the the Dr. took a sample from my chin and the test confirmed it's HSV2. Not sure why he said this, but he said I was lucky because recurring outbreaks on of oral HSV2 are rarer. I'm not really convinced. As I type this there is something on my upper lip that looks more like a pimple or a pink mole...but I'm thinking it's an outbreak. Not even sure.

Hi there @ScubaSteeve and welcome to the website. If you have had genital HSV for 10 years there is a chance the testing did not distinguish type. The answers to the following questions will help a bit: - where are your outbreaks specifically and what frequency? - have you had any IgG antibody testing for HSV?

Hi LLS.... I'm very sorry you are having so much discomfort from this outbreak.... the first outbreaks are always the most troublesome but  they will get less aggressive as time passes.  I personally find that valacyclovir is much more effective than just acyclovir so you may want to ask your doctor about switching and seeing if that helps.  Ask your doctor on Saturday if you really need to take a higher dose.... and as WilsoInAus suggested, I would ask for a 1,000 mg tablets with at least a 90 day supply to start.  As for pain, you may want to ask your doctor for a Rx of Zovirax ointment.... it contains acyclovir and the ointment form calms the sores down and reduces friction.... it should lessen the pain down there. As for diet, many people, myself included, learn what foods often act as triggers for outbreaks.  I can tell you from experience that the following are big outbreak triggers for me:   1. Too much caffeine (I've basically stopped coffee and have learned to enjoy a variety of decaf teas) 2. Any kind of nuts - including corn and even popcorn 3. Chocolate 4. Too much alcohol - particularly red wines  5. If possible, avoid any kind of steroids/immunosuppressants like prednisone in high doses.... anything that suppresses your immune system will give the virus free rein to run amuck - I learned this the hard way! 6, Stress.... although easier said than done, it will help with your overall health.  Studies show that stress is a common HSV outbreak trigger.... try to find a way to lower your stress levels. 7. lack of sleep.... personally, if I get less than 6  hours of sleep this often leads to an outbreak within a day or two.... work at getting a good 7-8 hours of solid sleep each night (I often use melatonin to help here). Some people find certain vitamins that boost the immune system, like zinc, help with overall healing and can lessen the severity of outbreaks and possibly prevent some outbreaks.  I personally take a number of antiviral/anti-inflammatory/anti-oxidant herbs/vitamins not so much for my HSV2 but for overall health (I don't have the healthiest of diets so, I feel I need to supplement to offset my lousy diet).  A google search of supplements that help with herpes will provide you with a long list of vitamins/herbs that may be of benefit but, try not to get carried away - many/most won't make much, if any, difference.... but, you can always experiment. As WilsoInAus also mentioned, a healthy diet is likely your best option. I should also mention that while some find vitamin C to be helpful, I found it to have the opposite effect.... the more I took the more it seemed to provoke outbreaks.   Things are always the toughest after initial infection.... it's going to get better, trust me.  Stick with the antiviral meds daily, try not to obsess on the fact you've contracted this virus, and try to avoid some of those triggers relating to outbreaks.  With time the number of outbreaks starts to decline and when you do have an outbreak, they will become less virulent. As WilsoInAus mentioned, a lot of your achiness, pain and overall flu-like symptoms are related to the fact your immune system is adjusting to this virus.... these lousy symptoms are just your immune system in action working to do its best to fight this virus... with time these symptoms will also lessen and disappear.   I hope this helps in some way.... please let us know if you have more questions.... and remember, go easy on yourself right now.... turn to those things in your life that calm you and also distract you from obsessing over the virus situation.  You are going to be just fine.... just give yourself some time to get past this initial unpleasant phase.... it will get better, I promise.

I was diagnosed with HPV2 ten years ago, which I contracted from an ex-girlfriend who was unaware she had it. Since then, I've lived a reserved life, not really opening up to others. There was only one person I felt interested in enough to share this with, but it didn't work out. There have been a few instances where I've let my guard down, had a night out, and ended up sleeping with someone. I know I should feel guilty about not discussing it beforehand, but I found it challenging because they know my family, and it felt overwhelming at the time, and I had alot of pent up desires from not ever being with someone for a long time.  After finally opening up to someone and realizing it wasn't the end of the world, I now understand that finding the right partner might be a matter of numbers. I desire to have more intimate relationships but need to find better ways to approach this topic and ensure I never spread it.  Thank you all for providing a space where I can be myself.

My swab results won’t be ready for another 5 days. Is there any harm is continuing the Valacyclovir? I was prescribed 1gm tablets for 10 days.
