GHSV-1 + oral sex

how

Recommended Posts

A few weeks ago I was diagnosed with genital herpes 1. My boyfriend and I have been together for over 3 years and we're virgins when we met...He get's coldsores, I had no idea, he hasn't had one since he was pretty young, even though a few days after my first OB started he had a small "pimple" beside his lip, he had bronchitis so I guess his immune system was down and his herpes reacted. My question is, can he still give me oral sex since he already has herpes orally? Could I give him genital herpes if he already has it orally? Please help me, I can't find any information on this and I'm so confused.

It can all be confusing.

Since he already has oral herpes, and you have genital herpes of the same strain from him, then him giving you oral sex is no problem. Neither of you can get it "more" where you already have it. But I would still avoid it during any outbreaks just because...eeeew and ouch.

It is possible he could contract HSV1 in his genitals by having vaginal penetrative sex with you, but less likely because he has antibodies already.

This article should help clear it up a bit for you. Especially be sure to read the last section titled "How Easily Spread?":

"Good" Virus/"Bad" Virus

The links on the right side of this page are also very informative.

I have genital type 1 herpes and we assume my husband has oral herpes because he tested + to type 1 but since he hasn't had an outbreak in either area we assume it is oral. He could have had a cold sore when he was a child just once and doesn't remember it. Anyway, we've been together for 21 yrs and married almost 15 yrs. So we give eachother oral sex and still have unprotected sex and everything is fine. I have only had the one outbreak thus far. He hasn't had an outbreak in the genitals and we will refrain from sex of course when I have an outbreak.

Thanks for your response! I received unprotected oral 10 weeks ago and immediately after had stinging in my glans and weird nerve pain. I am positive for HSV1 due to cold sores I got as a child, but as recent as 9 weeks after this exposure have tested negative for HSV2.    im nervous that I may have acquired hsv1 again on my genitals since HSV2 is rarely acquired from oral sex and doesn’t shed hardly at all, but haven’t seen any sores yet. Just weird symptoms and this started recently in my buttcrack when I was taking antibiotics.   Any advice or perspective would be greatly appreciated. @WilsoInAus

Hi @Throwaway765 and welcome. There is absolutely no concern over this being related to herpes. Something must be concerning you as to the possibility of herpes… what is it?
