I've just found out today that I have herpes, I feel disgusting. I have been single for nigh on 5 years following an abusive and horrendous relationship that left me in counselling and overweight with little to no confidence. I was literally scared of my own shadow. I found dating guys really difficult and it has taken me this long to feel confident in myself - although the weight has started to creep back up again. I have a VERY good best friend who has supported me throughout this whole period of the fear, getting tested and getting my results today - and now having not long come off the phone with a health professional who confirmed my condition - I feel disgusting. How can I ever have a relationship with someone again? who will want me? how easy will it be to have children? I am currently unwell too with the flu and this has just been an added blow. I feel to go to sleep and never wake up!

I am also from the UK, m, good to meet you too.

I've been through what you described and the support from the GUM clinics isn't very good is it. I just got given a pamplet, got told just to have sex with condoms and not bother about telling people and get on with it. Luckily I found this website, have a great GP and have done lots of research on my own. Using this site to support others and get support has been great. I still get angry from time to time and think about it too much but it is a pretty big thing to go through. I wont, and you shouldn't, let it define who you are. Our experiences define us and remember to deal with this issue separate to others as its just a medical condition.

I need to go back to the gum clinic to get more info - still a bit confused about it all and very paranoid! The website is good - but I am not really wanting to tell the doctor - doom! Shall just see how it goes - stay in touch!! Z

      Hi @CathM if you received oral sex in the days before the sores first appeared then it is important to be sure of type - culture tests do not type. Ask to see your result and see what it says. Is your partner going to test? This is also helpful.

      Hello@WilsoInAus I only know that they took a swab and then I was notified that I was positive for HSV 2. I don’t know have any knowledge about whether it was a culture test?

      Hi @CathM and welcome to the website. Yes there is little doubt you were infected by this new partner. This would have happened 2-10 days before the sores appeared. There is one question to settle quickly. Was your swab test a PCR with a result of HSV-2 detected. Or was it a culture test?

      Hello. Just been diagnosed with HSV2 after a swab test. Absolutely devastated at the diagnosis. Had symptoms after sleeping with my new partner. Symptoms started about 6 weeks after our first encounter. Did I get it from him? We split just before the diagnosis. I feel like my life is over, please help 😥
