Will the PRODROME eventually subside?

I was diagnosed with HSV 2 in July 2010.

I hear all these positive stories about how 'it gets better'. I'm not complaining a WHOLE lot, because all in all its been tolerable.

What I DO NOT find tolerable, is constantly feeling SOMETHING down there. A twinge, a burn, any sort of sensation that was not there before.

TRUST ME on this - I'm not being hypersensitive and picking up on 'sensations that were always there but I'm more sensitive to them now' - these are sensations of HERPES.

I want to know - does this diminish over time? And WHEN?

it does get better!

hey kitty!

the prodrome for me eased off after about 9-10 months. the first year sucked, the last few months have been alright! next year you'll hardly feel it at all. take supplements and eat right and you'll be fine. :)

I wonder if it actually makes a difference as to whether it is HSV1 or HSV2? I have HSV2...I really HOPE based on that - that it does get better....It will help me accept that I have Herpes that much more....

I was also diagnosed last July, and am still getting prodrome daily. I take no medication, though, and very little in the way of supplements. Don't know if that would make a big difference or not, but my guess is it would probably help some.

I can't see living the rest of my life like this...i really can't. To some its no big deal, but a constant reminder that my womanhood is tainted with this virus and physically makes itself known in some way (outbreak or not) is disturbing....

I wonder if what is being described as daily prodrome really is or not? Maybe it is herpes-associated neural sensations, but not so much "prodrome." To me, prodrome by definition would be the signal of an oncoming outbreak.

Not meaning to be a stickler for semantics. Just wondering, because it seems like it would make a difference. I mean, if you are having these symptoms every single day, are you also having super frequent ongoing outbreaks? :(

That's the problem, I can't really tell when an outbreak is coming or not because I am always getting these damn tingles or zinging sensations or whatever you want to call them. I didn't have them before. I have probably had about 7-8 outbreaks, mild for the most part, and am still not quite sure what triggers them, or when they are coming.

I think I hear what you are saying.

It's not really prodrome as such.

I did notice people using the term to explain this phenomenon which usually go on chronically.

For example, the term is oft used in the context of Epilepsy or Migraines.

With H, there isn't much else to do apart from what are recommended on this site. I also do get this. Hell!

Oh, is "prodrome" used in relation to seizures and migraines, too? I'd only ever heard the term "aura" in that context.

I also happen to have Epilepsy, and I wouldn't call it 'prodrome' per se, the technical term is 'aura'. Its what I get before I have a grand mal seizure.

Funny - but I haven't had a grand mall in 7 years. I get partials though and they are not really bothersome....(if I can only start having this same outlook about my H)...

Kitty,

I was diagnosed in Sept. 2010 with GHSV2. I had one sore the first outbreak and a second outbreak in December that was a few small bumps. I never had any specific prodrome that I could tell except that I got really sick in Dec. with a cold that lasted over two weeks! I think maybe my immune system couldn't fight off both at the same time.

Since this began I have had some kind of sensations going on that I KNOW I did not have before. I got sores along my bikini line where I shave and even after the sores are gone I have burning sensations all along my bikini area. My vagina almost always feels like it is burning slightly (I ended up with a yeast infection that took over a month to get rid of after the first outbreak), and my left leg and buttock have pretty constant pain. I am on my feet all day for work and I am used to some aches and pains but this just never stops!

I have been wondering if these symptoms are prodrome (though only two mild outbreaks in the first five months) or if it means the virus is active and contagious ALL THE FREAKING TIME even though I am not having constant outbreaks!

I am getting very frustrated with all this though and kinda depressed, I am thinking about daily suppressive to see if it changes anything, but I HATE taking pills! The side effects made me have headaches, feel groggy and tired! I am at my wits end!

I agree with your sentiment here and I am feeling exactly like this! I got this from my boyfriend who swears he has never had an outbreak and at first I thought I was dealing with it pretty well but now the relationship has issues, many physical because of the herpes and the related symptoms, and emotional because I feel violated and hurt. Even if he never meant to hurt me I still feel like part of my sexuality and attractiveness has been taken away from me! The daily symptoms are a constant reminder! :(

He Won't Kiss Me

I have been seeing a guy, for a while now. He is not my boy friend but we spend a lot of time together.

Problem is he refuses to kiss me. Don't get me wrong we have done everything else but kiss.

I'm 22 and he is 24, and he says he doesn't kiss because he did it so much in high school that he got tired of it.

How do people get tired of kissing. I'm desperate, we have had many arguments over the issue and I don't want to just go ahead and kiss him cause he obviously doesn't want to and I don't want to feel like I'm disrespecting him.

I feel we are in the movie pretty women except he's the prostitute and I'm just the girl, since he won't kiss.

What can I do?????

I mean is he just afraid of getting emotionally attached if he kisses me? or could he be BI.

I mean a guy at his age should be more mature about things.

Well please help this is really bothering me.

Thanks.

Hi there @ScubaSteeve and welcome to the website. If you have had genital HSV for 10 years there is a chance the testing did not distinguish type. The answers to the following questions will help a bit: - where are your outbreaks specifically and what frequency? - have you had any IgG antibody testing for HSV?

Hi LLS.... I'm very sorry you are having so much discomfort from this outbreak.... the first outbreaks are always the most troublesome but  they will get less aggressive as time passes.  I personally find that valacyclovir is much more effective than just acyclovir so you may want to ask your doctor about switching and seeing if that helps.  Ask your doctor on Saturday if you really need to take a higher dose.... and as WilsoInAus suggested, I would ask for a 1,000 mg tablets with at least a 90 day supply to start.  As for pain, you may want to ask your doctor for a Rx of Zovirax ointment.... it contains acyclovir and the ointment form calms the sores down and reduces friction.... it should lessen the pain down there. As for diet, many people, myself included, learn what foods often act as triggers for outbreaks.  I can tell you from experience that the following are big outbreak triggers for me:   1. Too much caffeine (I've basically stopped coffee and have learned to enjoy a variety of decaf teas) 2. Any kind of nuts - including corn and even popcorn 3. Chocolate 4. Too much alcohol - particularly red wines  5. If possible, avoid any kind of steroids/immunosuppressants like prednisone in high doses.... anything that suppresses your immune system will give the virus free rein to run amuck - I learned this the hard way! 6, Stress.... although easier said than done, it will help with your overall health.  Studies show that stress is a common HSV outbreak trigger.... try to find a way to lower your stress levels. 7. lack of sleep.... personally, if I get less than 6  hours of sleep this often leads to an outbreak within a day or two.... work at getting a good 7-8 hours of solid sleep each night (I often use melatonin to help here). Some people find certain vitamins that boost the immune system, like zinc, help with overall healing and can lessen the severity of outbreaks and possibly prevent some outbreaks.  I personally take a number of antiviral/anti-inflammatory/anti-oxidant herbs/vitamins not so much for my HSV2 but for overall health (I don't have the healthiest of diets so, I feel I need to supplement to offset my lousy diet).  A google search of supplements that help with herpes will provide you with a long list of vitamins/herbs that may be of benefit but, try not to get carried away - many/most won't make much, if any, difference.... but, you can always experiment. As WilsoInAus also mentioned, a healthy diet is likely your best option. I should also mention that while some find vitamin C to be helpful, I found it to have the opposite effect.... the more I took the more it seemed to provoke outbreaks.   Things are always the toughest after initial infection.... it's going to get better, trust me.  Stick with the antiviral meds daily, try not to obsess on the fact you've contracted this virus, and try to avoid some of those triggers relating to outbreaks.  With time the number of outbreaks starts to decline and when you do have an outbreak, they will become less virulent. As WilsoInAus mentioned, a lot of your achiness, pain and overall flu-like symptoms are related to the fact your immune system is adjusting to this virus.... these lousy symptoms are just your immune system in action working to do its best to fight this virus... with time these symptoms will also lessen and disappear.   I hope this helps in some way.... please let us know if you have more questions.... and remember, go easy on yourself right now.... turn to those things in your life that calm you and also distract you from obsessing over the virus situation.  You are going to be just fine.... just give yourself some time to get past this initial unpleasant phase.... it will get better, I promise.

I was diagnosed with HPV2 ten years ago, which I contracted from an ex-girlfriend who was unaware she had it. Since then, I've lived a reserved life, not really opening up to others. There was only one person I felt interested in enough to share this with, but it didn't work out. There have been a few instances where I've let my guard down, had a night out, and ended up sleeping with someone. I know I should feel guilty about not discussing it beforehand, but I found it challenging because they know my family, and it felt overwhelming at the time, and I had alot of pent up desires from not ever being with someone for a long time.  After finally opening up to someone and realizing it wasn't the end of the world, I now understand that finding the right partner might be a matter of numbers. I desire to have more intimate relationships but need to find better ways to approach this topic and ensure I never spread it.  Thank you all for providing a space where I can be myself.

My swab results won’t be ready for another 5 days. Is there any harm is continuing the Valacyclovir? I was prescribed 1gm tablets for 10 days.
