Long term side effects from acyclovir

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I have been on acyclovir suppression therapy for about 4 years with very successful results. However, over the past two years I have begun to have a lot of muscle pain and weakness, some visual blurring, fatigue, and difficulty initiating urination. I have had screening for other conditions but finally, my doctor found some info on acyclovir side effects and these are related but rare. Does anyone have any info on this? The drug company info is scant and we haven't been able to make a determination. I hate to give up the meds when they've been working so well but my physical condition is deteriorating. HELP?!

Thanks!

As far as I know there are no long term side effects.

You might try asking Terri Warren about this over on WebMD.

I'm almost positive that she will agree with me though...

Good Luck,

Angela

Thanks

Angela, thanks for your response. I've also gotten the same answer from my OB/GYN. My primary doc is going to do some other tests and THANK GOD! is allowing me to go back on the acyclovir for now. Of course, I've had 3 breakouts since stopping it 6 weeks ago!

Have a great day,

Betty

Hi Betty ~

I don't think you have anything to worry about being on suppressive therapy for as long as you want to.

There is a gal that posts over on WebMD... she goes by "grace" and her name is Betsy. She's been on suppressive therapy with Acyclovir for years and has never really had any problems with it.

You might want to try contacting her just in case you had any questions for her. She also happens to be an H Pal.

Hope this helps,

Angela :D

Hi @WhatDidIDo2023, hopefully all is well with you and your significant other and are still together.   Did she develop any other symptoms after you mentioned her getting itchiness? Was it determined what you had was contagious? Most likely developed a fungal disease and caused her a yeast or uti

Hi @Luna 01 I really feel it is worthwhile obtaining a proper Herpeselect test given the outcomes of the home panel test. Regardless, your current symptoms are almost certainly not related to herpes. Hopefully, your doctor can assist in resolving these.
