Herpes and the new Shingles vaccination?

Does any one know if the new vaccination that they are talking about in the news for shingles (herpes zoster) would have any effect on the hv1 or hv2 virus?

From what I understand they are all part of the same viral family...an outbreak of shingles as an adult stems from the childhood chickenpox infection.

If this vaccine can prevent adults from having a future outbreak of shingles could it maybe help prevent those with hv1 or hv2 from suffering from future outbreaks?

I am new to the site and don't know much yet -- who do we ask, how do we find out if there are any clinical studies going on to test if this vaccine would work for us...

I look forward to hearing if anyone knows anything.

I can tell you that herpes zoster and herpes simplex are two different types of virus... so I'm not sure if a vaccine for zoster would do anything for simplex... know what I mean? This would definitely be a fantastic question for Terri Warren over on WebMD.

Even so... zoster is different from simplex.

I honestly don't know... if you do ask Terri about it over on webmd will you let us know what she says?

Best wishes,

Angela :D

Anything?

Blisterbut - Did you ever find anything out? Did you ever get the vaccine? Did it help you at all? I'm thinking of getting it but want to hear some testimonials first since I am only 45 and not 60. Still, I'd rather =go for the 50% odds than have shingles and who knows, maybe it will help.

There is no reason to think a vaccine for the Varicella Zoster Virus (shingles) would have any effect on your chance of acquiring the Herpes Simplex Virus. As noted before, even though they are both in the herpesviridae family of viruses, they are entirely different viruses.

Keep in mind that the herpesviridae family is quite large. It includes viruses that affect other animals, as well as those that affect humans. They are all unique viruses, grouped together because they do share a few traits in common.

Slow into this discussion but I just had the live attenuated virus vaccine for chickenpox. I've documented my OBs over the last year (8+) so will be able to give a good comparison.

So it's been over a month and I can honestly say I feel the vaccine has had an effect.

Greatly reduced tingles (almost nothing) and zero OB since recieving the shot. It's only been a month so I cannot comment if this will last but I will endevour to keep you updated. Give me a prod if I don't.

Just to update I did get a small OB, this was after consuming trigger foods and no sleep etc. I still think it is a huge improvement and if you are thinking about getting the shot, go for it there has been a marked difference I think.

Thank you for update! What type of vax you had - Zostavax/Varivax?

Had you had chicken pox before getting the shot?

Glaxo Smith Kline is close to releasing a new, much more effective Shingles vaccine called Shingrex. I believe it's due to be released in 2018?

It reportedly has had some positive effect against HSV symptoms even though that wasn't the intention of the vaccine.

Hi, just to update again. I just had another outbreak, quite small but definitely there. That would be two OBs since receiving the vaccine in Apr, unfortunately that is my average pre-vaccine. The I still believe the vaccine has been positive as an effect overall (who knows that could be a placebo effect!) but definitely not a 'cure' as reported in the Dovepress article. A bit of a disappointment I'm afraid but nothing ventured nothing gained. I hope people continue to experiment and share their experiences on this :)

I'm response to the previous question, yes I did have chicken pox as a child.

Update: I’ve not had an OB since I last posted (I also received the booster for the shingles vaccine in aug). This is certainly breaking with the pattern of frequency for OBs. I feel much better and I really believe the vaccine has had an effect. I will continue to update.

It was not Shingrix. Maybe varivax or zostavax. Shringrix is a subunit vaccine not live attenuated virus vaccine.

Update: still no OBs. I get a slight itch in my urethra occasionally afternoon drinking lots of beer the night before but in don’t know if this is h related. It’s been 6 months now since the booster. I’ve tried a number of things and this is by far the best, I have virtually forgotten about it hence my absence from this site.

Update: sadly I got an OB today, same spot as before and silimar size. It follows a night of heavy drinking. Overall still a marked improvement from before but disappointing to have an OB after 6months of peace! Some have asked what the vaccine was I took: VZ-VAX (live attenuated varicella-zoster virus vaccine).

Hi @WhatDidIDo2023, hopefully all is well with you and your significant other and are still together.   Did she develop any other symptoms after you mentioned her getting itchiness? Was it determined what you had was contagious? Most likely developed a fungal disease and caused her a yeast or uti

Well thank you I appreciate it

Hi @Luna 01 I really feel it is worthwhile obtaining a proper Herpeselect test given the outcomes of the home panel test. Regardless, your current symptoms are almost certainly not related to herpes. Hopefully, your doctor can assist in resolving these.
