How long can it go undetected?

3 posts in this topic

My regular sexual partner had a baby with me in December. Just before the baby was born, she noticed cysts on her buttocks (three in a triangular position). She recalled seeing one on my right hip which I broke and cleaned with my knife. So she had the doctor test it.

She just now told me that, on the day that my baby was born, she was told that she had Herpes. So, now I have been engaging in sexual activity for the past four months with a woman who knew she had Herpes and did not tell me because she refuses to trust me not to sleep with other women.

The thing is, she had herself tested when she was four months pregnant (without telling me) and claims that she was clean at that time. However, I had my first experience with an unexplained sore in my genital region (just below my belt) shortly after meeting her in 2008.

Can the virus go this long without being detected? I am certain I got it from her as I have had no other partners since I met her, and my first cyst was shortly after my first sexual encounter with her. She is certain she got it from me because of her chosen paranoia.

Could the earlier test truly have come negative if she had it for a minimum of three years? Or is it just me?

Hey man. The herpes "whodunit" game can be tricky. But, obviously, it's not outstanding that your sex partner didn't let you know when she found it. If she truly tested negative when she was four months pregnant then she couldn't possibly have given it to you in 2008. But, you might want to take a look at those actual results.

From my research, and other conversations on this forum and from what I understand by speaking with doctors, the typical seroconversion time period once exposed to Herpes is a maximum of at least 3-4 months for it to show up in your bloodwork, but it most commonly can show up earlier than that too. I seroconverted for HSV2 within 1 month. Does that mean if you have sex, you can go 4 months, and then BAM - it appears? No. It means that if you are exposed, and are experiencing outbreaks but having negative results, means that you are testing too soon. Thats what that means.

I agree with ScaryJimmy. I would definitely ask to see those results with your own eyes. If she refuses. She's hiding something. Although by refusing, she doesn't HAVE to show you anything, because it's her own personal business, but I'm sure that if she was trying to prove to you wholeheartedly that she was indeed 'negative', I'm sure she would have NO issues with showing you her private medical information.

The valacyclovir gave me yeast infections.  I had to stop taking them.

I don't understand their lack of knowledge and care. Like in my field of engineering if I'm asked to engineer an automated process I must be very accurate with my field and proof of concept and then manifest it I can't speculate or be partial

@betterdayssoon These links answer the questions you asked. Antivirals can delay seroconversion and produce a false positve blood test according to Terri Warren RN. Also there is a likely chance your girlfriend has oral HSV1 even if she doesn't get lip sores. The Herpselct can miss up to 25% of HSV1 according to Terri Warren. RN. Western Blot picked up my HSV 1 that the other tests missed. The western blot kit can be ordered fro the University of Washington. 1800 713-5198

I had a sore on my finger during my first ob. Idk if it's possible to spread it on yourself or not, really. I've been tested across the board and all they've found was hsv2.. if it happens again I'm going in, but for now I'll take my antivirals and see if it helps. I'm somewhat of a hypochondriac and I've been known to freak out about what I read on the Internet. I'm trying my best not to stress out about it so I can avoid more ob's... haha

@WilsoInAus4 i lost the picture of his results on my phone but I remember that it had hsv-1 negative and hsv-2 negative. A misdiagnoses can happen if he got tested straight after having it with someone infected by the virus... But it's been four months. As for my past partner, he doesn't have the right to flip on me though he can just show me the results and shut me up... It's my right to ask for it. If someone asked for my results I wouldn't hesitate, so why did he?

You might not like what i'm about to say, but posts like this a part of the reason that the 'stigma' around this virus is so bad. So far, you don't have herpes. Yet you are behaving as if you do and further, as if it's the end of the world. So then how do you think people who are positive react to reading your posts on here? Going on STD dating sites in 'preparation' when you haven't even been diagnosed is one of the more ridiculous things i have read on these forums. You say you are not ready to deal with the stigma if you have it, but can you see that in the space of 6 posts, you have done more to promote the stigma than most other people?

It doesn't usually take this long for swabs results to be determined.....are you still waiting for them? As long as the swabs were taken within a two day window of the lumps/blisters appearing, then a reliable amount of culture should have been taken to make the diagnosis robust
