Flax seed as a trigger?

12 posts in this topic

Hi... I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about flax seed and it being a trigger for an OB. Before being diagnosed with HSV, I ate flax on a daily basis due to it's high omega conetent. But now I hear you are supposed to steer clear of nuts and seeds. Would this include flax?

The information that I got from an herbalist who specializes in treating herpes is that flax seed and hemp seeds are actually good for herpes (maybe he didn't say good but definitely not harmful).

Thank you so much for your post! It would be a shame to cut them out of my diet!

swizzle...for many years now there has been a belief that there is a connection between the amino acid L-arginine and increased herpes outbreaks. Nuts and chocolate for instance are high in arginine. Some people supplement their diets with Lysine... another amino acid... which "neutralizes" the pro-herpes effect of L-arginine. I personally believe this theory to be true.

Here's an interesting factoid:drug companies researched the L-arginine/lysine theory and used that very model as the basis for development of drugs like Zovirax(acyclovir) and Valtrex(valacylovir)

One more thing for you ladies...You should avoid using those sexual enhancement gels that are supposed to make your clit more sensitive. They are loaded with L-arginine.. in fact.. L-arginine is the main ingredient Two that come to mind are Viagel and Climatique. Gynecologists have reported their patients and/or partners complaining of having more genital herpes outbreaks with use of these gels..in fact it happened to me A gel by the name of Zestra does not have L-arginine in it and is recommended for people with herpes. I haven't used it.

about Flax

yeah, according to Chinese Med (book: Asian Traditions and Modern Nutrition) flax is definitely OK for ppl w herpes........

question: Anybody know about Chia seeds? What about Coconut? - ive heard mixed messages on the latter....

btw, anybody tried the diet they recommend in the above book? they say if you follow for 6 months MOST ppl never again experience herpes symptoms.... im thinking to do it but it is strict - no animal products, no nuts/seeds (except flax), no fruits (including tomatoes, citrus), no honey/sugar etc, no added salt, only small amts of olive oil (no sesame oil)... etc etc... any one have any thoughts? oh, plus take decoction of sarsaparilla, dandylion, and gentian... thanks - please email me at noramc6@hotmail.com if you have any info for me :-)

I consume 2 tbsp of flax seed oil a day and it hasn't been a trigger for me but everyone is different. If you're worried try a little bit and see what happens.

Nora, if you find out anything, please post it here so we all know but... the things that you said No... it is hard.... it is already hard enough for me to say no to nuts and chocolates :(

I do eat alot of sesame seed.. didn't even think of that is seed and nuts.... but for my case... seseame seed seems ok to me even if I put alot in my rice daily... just chocolates...

Not all foods on that chart are off limits! Look at the chart, and analyze the ratio of arginine to lysine. The foods at the bottom of the chart are the worst, and have the most arginine. The foods at the top of the chart are ok. You must read the chart by reading the numbers!

i eat flax all the time with no prob. i havent had an outbreak in FOREVER....then i found coconut oil which i took to clear up my acne. it worked and no prob with flare ups.

THEN i found out chia seeds were great omega for you but when i started adding a scoop to my shake in the morning- it was about 3 days later and i started having an outbreak. i stopped chia seeds and havent had outbreak in months.

decided to test chia seeds again and the same exact thing happened....2 days after eating them in the morning i had an outbreak so i no longer eat them. that has proved to me that they are a trigger for me. but i still take the flax and coconut with no issues at all.

I just have to say to both of you, thank the stars we found this site! I honestly don't know how I'd be coping these last few days if it wasn't for it.  Sounds like we all have had pretty unpleasant visits with the doc and had to forge our own way to get information that can empower us with this, which in itself is appalling. When I get angry, it's not at the HSV, but at the healthcare system and stigma of STD's.  And I fell into that trap before being diagnosed; judging others without even realizing it.  But what a damn fool I was.  We aren't bad people for having sex. We aren't bad people for getting dealt a shitty hand in life.  I don't know, I guess I've had a bit of a wake up call as they say.. I don't want people like us to have to keep hidden away in the shadows. It's not fair.  Does that make sense?

Hi Cah, I had a similar experience with my doc.. Basically she said it could be new or an old infection that was dormant for some time; my ob was most likely caused by stress to my body.  She didn't order blood work and said to come back if anything else shows up and was pretty confident I wouldn't have another ob.  I couldn't live like that so I called one of those same day STD testing facilities and had blood drawn. The results came back today (typically comes back in 1-3 days).  It shows I am positive for HSV2 and was infected over 90 days ago based on the IGG test.  It was $269 for the full Herpes panel (I'm in MI).  Kind of expensive but the thought of knowing if I'm positive or not was worth it.  Most likely I've had to infection for much longer than 90 days without knowing it.

I know how u r feeling. I just lost my bf of 8 months because of this. But before that I was married to my now ex husband for 15 years. He never thought twice about the herpes because he loved me. He never had a ob. He hasn't gotten tested so I don't know if he has it for sure. I also had a relationship after with another man that loved me enough. So trust and believe if they love u they will be ok. And best part is they have u there to help them. I am very heart broken that my current ex bf couldn't do it but I can't blame him but there r condoms to help. Please hang in there. My ex was wonderful. Someone will love u enough. I  hoping I will get that again.

I'm glad your talk with him went well.  Gives me hope that hopefully my husband won't flip out.  I'm still doing my research on it though.  This site has definitely helped a lot. I just have a horrible feeling that he's going to go crazy on me.  He doesn't take bad news very well.

Spot on, most people positive for the virus test over 5!

This doesn't sound like a primary herpes outbreak. If you have HSV-1, chances are you've had it a long time. A sore throat is not related to herpes. In any event, you are not able to spreads the virus to another body location.

Does the number go up as time goes on? I've seen some people get their results back and have much higher scores. If so then after 2years of abstinence, having that low of a number wouldn't make sense. Right?

for a topical I'd use this vaginal wash called Yin Care https://www.amazon.com/Arbor-International-Herbal-3-4oz-100ml/dp/B0009Y2EVK It seems a little pricey at $20, it's a patent product but well worth it.   There are different ways of applying it. Wet a cotton swab and dab it on affected area.

Im pretty sure it was a recent infection because i had the extremely sore throat (it felt different from any other sore throat ive had before), high fever for days, headache, fatigue, my back gums were swollen I remember i did have sores on the inside of my mouth as well, but i think they were canker sores, they caused alot of pain and it was literally nothing ive ever felt before, i couldnt even eat for days and I had never been sick like that with those symptoms. and lets assume that this was a recent infection, then could i have possibly infected another part of my body from the time period I originally posted about, and Id like to correct myself, my "second outbreak" was actually towards the end of may early june and i havent had another outbreak since. thank you again for replying

Jeremy, omega 3 is a very powerful anti-inflammatory that could probably help you and you can find it in almost any pharmacy section. It may help.
