The only time I was sexually active was a year ago with a guy who had been with know one before me and it was oral...can it just lay dormat all this time? I dont know how to keep such a huge secret right now its killing me and I just cant belive this is happening to me and I dont understand why....Oh and the pain is so freaking bad!

Dear A

sorry that you have this stuff, but you are not alone. Unfortunately, it only takes one intimate encounter with someone to get this and YES it can lay dormant for a long time. (although I think this is more rare than normal....especially for a "primary outbreak" to occur now...are you under alot of stress before this outbreak happened? Anything different or weird going on your life?)

If the lad you were with had a cold sore or the beginning of one at the time you were with him, then he could have easily passed it on to you...then it hung out somewhere in your body, sleeping, until NOW.

Have your doctor test you for herpes 1 or 2. At least then you will know what you are up against. Generally herpes 1 is less virulent of a strain than 2. So while it sucks big time NOW, down the road, the outbreaks may not be as bad and as nasty as herpes simplex 2.

Do not feel bad. 1 in every 4 americans have genital herpes. And those lovely things called coldsores and fever blisters. (the nice way of sayin I HAVE HERPES SIMPLEX 1!!!) About 85-95% of americans have THAT !

It is tough, I know being so young. It seems so unfair too. Just try hard to stay strong, you are not a bad person, you are not a dirty person. You can live a normal life, you are just going to have to take some extra precautions. And as far as sex and intimacy goes, you are going to have to be honest with potential partners. Some of them will be real jerks. Screw them. IF they treal you crappy because of this, then they would have probably treated you crappy if you DIDN'T have it. Some people are just scared and afraid too....don't be mad at them for being fearful. Think of how you feel right now....how we ALL have felt (and still do!) from time to time in relation to this virus.

I think you will be ok. There is a tON of information on this website, so just do some reading and research and I think you will feel a little bit better.

Take care of yourself. EAt well. Exercise, and be strong!

I know I can relate. I just found out I have hsv2 3 days ago. I thought it was irritation from shaving but I was swollen as well. I still haven't absorbed the idea of actually having this. I feel so ashamed. I guess the best thing to do is to be here on this site and talk to others who have had this and dealt with it for quite some time. I agree that it hurts. I'm in so much pain right now. The medicine doesn't help since I'm having bad side effects of nausea. :-(

He was shocked

I'm a widow and I met a recent widow of 7 months and felt safe with him. I had a very bad first breakout, very painful. My Dr said they were definitely contacted from him. He's shocked, said he never had the herpes virus. He was married for 30 yrs prior. He is going to the Dr to be tested. So to say the least, I'm shocked this happened. Help!

It's not a "secret"

...I feel like im keeping a secret from the world minus my mom...I dont know how to keep such a huge secret right now its killing me...

Stop thinking of it as a "huge secret." It's not. It's just private medical information. Most of us keep our medical information and other personal information private. We generally do not relate it to people unless there is a good reason. This kind of thing is in that category--it's private, not "secret."

It just feels huge to you because you just found out you have it and because it hurts and because it involves a socially stigmatized disease. But it's really just the simple knowledge that you have been diagnosed with a medical condition that will require some management. Think of it like an allergy; It's annoying, even painful at times (although the pain usually lessens with time), sometimes requires medication and some different behaviors. But it's not a shameful secret. Just private information that you have no real reason to reveal to people in general.

Hi raji,

I'm sorry you just found out, after all this time, that you have both.

Chances are, you had type 1 from childhood, which would help to fight the type 2 you acquired somewhere along the way. It happens often, that someone with an established type 1 infection will have such mild outbreaks for type 2 that they go unrecognized. This may be the case with both of you or it's possible your wife hasn't contracted it.

Doctors do not test for herpes during pregnancy unless the mother requests it or the doctor sees symptoms he might suspect are herpes.

If you have any more questions that aren't answered in the links on the right, we'll do our best to help. If you plan on having anymore children, it would be a good idea for both of you to gain as much knowledge about HSV as you can and that your wife be tested if she hasn't already.

I hope the two of you can work through this. It does get easier with time.

Hi raji,

The hpv was probably detected through a pap smear and they don't test for herpes when they do an annual pap. The patient has to request a herpes test as it's not even included in a standard std panel. If she were to have any classic symptoms of herpes, like sores or blisters, then they could do a viral culture which is done by swabbing the area. If there are no symptoms to swab then they generally give the patient a lab order to have blood drawn to look for the antibodies.

There is no way to know if she contracted herpes at the same time that she had contracted the hpv. She should ask her doctor to give her a lab oder for an IgG Type Specific Antibody test for HSV-1 and HSV-2 so that if you plan on having more children, her doctor can take the necessary precautions before the baby is born.

I hope this was helpful.

Yes raji, there are many people here who have had it for years and didn't know it until they had an outbreak or went for std testing and found out through a blood test.

It is common for persons with a type 1 oral infection to not experience classic herpes symptoms and men in general have much milder outbreaks.

If your wife doesn't have any symptoms then she should have the blood test done. Women can contract it much easier than men because of their anatomy. If you have both types, it's possible she does too and this could explain why she may not know, if she does have it.

I know how it feels

Hi,

I know how you feel because I am just a bit older than you and have been seeing this guy for almost a year. I finally decided to be intimate with him after he had his HIV test done and I found out yesterday that I have HSV2. Im really freaked out because Im not sure how to deal with it. I don't have any symptoms yet and Im dreading the day they show up. Im really panicking right now and I feel like there is no one to talk to especially since my boyfriend is really far away right now.

I worry that Im never going to see him again, and even if I do, I don't know how to relate to him with this. I don't think I blame him because I need to believe that he genuinely didnt know he had it but Im so scared

Hello, I'm new here today.

My main interest is to try and find some kind of remedy that gives relief, as when I do get outbreaks the back pain is so severe as well as joints and legs. I usually don't know what it is at first because that happens and then maybe after another week or so passes, I see a sore. Usually there is just one, but on another occasion I had three (but only the one time). This laid dormant in my body for about six years and then right before i was to have a knee replacement I had my first outbreak (due to stress). then I didn't have another one for a long, long time. About four years later I retired and I moved back to Utah after being gone for 20 years. I started having the worse episodes ever. I've been here for almost 3 years now and I get about 4 outbreaks a year even taking valtrex everyday. My body still hurts horribly as I think it attacks the weakest part of my body which for me is my back and my joints. I still get angry about it sometimes. Haven't dated in 14 years.

Hi - first time on the site

Hi all,

I found a few weeks ago and I am pretty upset about it. I just started seeing someone and now I just want to not see him anymore because I don't want to have to tell anyone else that i have genital herpes. It really sucks - the Valtrex is soooo expensive and even when I take one a day i get break outs and then have to take 2 or 3 times a day like right now. I keep asking myself why this had to happen to me and how I went my whole life being so careful and one slip up (apparently) and I have this lifelong disease. I also get achy and very tired/exhaused alot and I guess it is related, but not sure.

I had an IGG test  and the ranges were out of range and high  HSV 1 was 42 and HSV 2 was 19 so I guess it was accurate but the problem now is I can't figure out when or who I got it from. In 2018 to 2019 when I was with my ex I was STD tested but not sure if herpes was included but my ex was supposed to get tested but refused. I experienced some trauma with him and didn't date until a year and a half later so I'm confused. The guy I dated after the ex who didn't want to be tested I told them a week ago about my results he was trying to be there for me and understanding,I told him to get tested but to request a herpes blood test , because he had no noticeable lesions or bumps ever is what he said and I never noticed any on him now he has shut down all his social media and I can't reach him. Hoping he's okay, I feel bad because in 2018 I did have what I was told it was an abrasion that tingled but at my doctor the day I was tested they told me it wasn't herpes but I think it was only a visible diagnosis. I keep having it reoccur from time to time

Hello "FeelingLost".... your fears and concerns are understandable but, nothing you've described regarding the sexual encounter would cause you to contract herpes.... further, your symptoms are not herpes related.  Best of all, your doctor is correct, your results don't show any herpes here.  You can relax.... definitely have your GP take a look at things and see what might be causing the symptoms but, again, none of them are typical herpes related.  I wish you the best in terms of talking to your wife about this encounter.... hopefully she will understand and you both can work through this amicably.  We all make mistakes.... be careful not to beat yourself up too hard over this.... you can become so racked with guilt that you start imagining physical symptoms.  Best of luck.... and take care..... come back to the site if you have questions.

Hi (I’m really scared and feel really disappointed in myself and worried about my future), I had oral sex with a condom almost 3 weeks ago and a massage parlor. I also received a hand job at the same time prior to putting a condom on, also may have rubbed my penis on her back a little. Did not touch her genitals I don’t recall any sores on her back. After the event she handed me a pice of TP and after I took off the condom I wiped my penis head to clear away the excess ejaculation…this is where I suspect I got infected, she had just gone pee and wiped and maybe touched a sore or something and then I got it on my penis from the tp? Idk. I’m just flailing.   After this I’ve had discomfort on the skin below the head of my penis and 4 bumps for 2 weeks now, the bumps don’t seem to have changed in size. I also had frequent urination for about a week and have had dull pain in my groin on and off. I also have some pins and needles on the sides of my abdomen/trunk that get worse when I go out in the heat or get dehydrated. I’ve had a lot of trouble sleeping, likely due to guilt and shame and worry about the future.   so I got one test done at 10 days from the event (idk know if this can tell me anything… the doctor assured me it was 100% correct and I don’t have herpes. I was not physically examined). I got a full panel std. neg for everything. HSV-1 results: IgG 0.3 / HSV-2 IgG 0.9 hsv-1 IgM = 2.2 hsv-2 IgM = 3.0 (Reference V. Negative: Less than 9.0 Borderline: 9.0 to 11.0 Positive: Greater than 11.0) I have an appointment with my GP on Thursday, hoping he can help. Will likely go to a std testing service tomorrow to see if I can get in an antiviral proactively. Plan to get tested again this week.
