I HATE Valtrex

It's true...it does work on outbreaks. But when I take it, it completely alters my mood and makes me irritable, angry, sad, and depressed. I know most people don't react this way, but I just don't like the person I am when I'm on this med. I'm on my 4th outbreak in 3 months...I thought this was supposed to be getting easier? Are there any other alternatives that really ACTUALLY work? I've changed my diet, I'm taking lysine twice a day - I think I'm doing everything right...any insight? Ugh...this is not pleasant at all. I'm grumpy, horny ( I feel like it's been a month since I made love with my boyfriend), and in pain. :(

I feel ya darlin'...I use to NEVER have outbreaks, and now it seems once I get one, I get a "swarm of them" all the time. (I just go over an outbreak about a week or so ago...now I am having one again!!!! What the FUCK!)

Keep up with the lysine and eating well. I don't know what the hell is wrong with me, it has me worried.

The only thing I can sumise for me is this:

1) I use to do a completely no carb/lo carb diet. No "white" foods. So no flours, no sugars, no oats, no breads (UNLESS it was specifically lo carb bread.) NOW I am back to my old carb addicted habits. (this happened when I got preggo and hasn't changed in over a year since I HAD the baby

2) I have put on about 50 extra pounds. Thank GOD I am tall, so while I look chunkier, it would be worse on a woman who is five foot one or something. I am NOT happy with this weight gain and it makes me wonder if there is a correlation of weight gain/excessive weight and outbreaks. Add the carb factor in and well....sheesh, I am a MESS. Before...I drank alcohol most weekends, ate NUTS (good on a lo carb diet...I LOVE crunchy things) and drank at least a cop or two of coffee a day, and I NEVER HAD ANY OUTBREAKS!!! I am very frustrated to say the least.

PErhaps you are having several outbreaks because you are "new" to this virus and your body is just working overtime building up the antibodies to it. Just keep doing good things like eating well, exercising, and lysine....I hope it works out. But they should start to taper off eventually. Maybe try eliminating other foods from your diet as well. (I never knew oatmeal was bad...ate a TON of it a month ago and had a BAD outbreak. )

Good luck to you. I hope that as time moves on things get better!

hi.

i am newly diagnosed and appt. had "mild" (NO) sypmtoms. she was able to scrape from one of two small blisters but it didnt show up in my blood.

either or. she gave me at first the 1000MG valtrex twice a day.

i dont know if its the medication or what, but i was constipated the whole time, i had to take some herbel stuff for that, and today i am noticing how i (misdiagnosed myself) again (its only been two weeks, one feeling clear), now hurting to urinate already. that was I guess my SIGN that i had it. pffft.

does it work or what?

right now shes got me on supressive therapy of 500mg once a day.

are we supposed to go get a higher dosage when outbreaks occur (or u think they are about to occur?)

first post here i can see this being bundles of joy, i am miserable.

me too

I hate Valtrex because I've been on 1000mg once a day for more than a month and I haven't been outbreak free at all yet. Talk about frustrating. My doctor said I could take it twice a day, but I'm alittle scared to take so much anti-viral stuff. I recently had a friend die of a brain hemorrage (which did NOT start because of anti-virals) that just wouldn't stop and the doctors said it was probably because of the anti-virals he was on (for HIV).

Also, who can afford to take two 1000mg Valtrex a day??? I can't hardly afford it once a day.

No kidding, the cost of Valtrex is prohibitive without insurance. Even acylcovir is pretty expensive. It gets so depressing to think about all the $$ that we now need to spend just to keep ourselves feeling like we SHOULD be feeling, ie, normal. I love travel and I think about the cost in terms of plane fare. Like, I spent $600 on a one-month supply of Valtrex (500 mg 3x/day for an outbreak that wouldn't quit) -- as soon as I saw that price tag I immediately got a rx for acyclovir -- and I couldn't help thinking that that would have taken me to Italy, my #1 destination wish right now. Kind of adds insult to injury!

https://imgur.com/a/cVi8yJY 2 weeks ago I had unprotected oral sex. Few days later I wake up with a stinging sensation in my urethra. I don't have any blisters, lesions or redness, my penis looks completely normal from the outside, but the stinging in my urethra is always there. Urinating doesn't make the pain worse. From the research I've done and how my body feels I'm pretty sure I caught genital hsv1. To make matters worse I think I transmitted it to my eyelid by touching my infected penis and then my eyelid which did develop a blister. Can anyone look at my lower eyelid and tell me if it looks anything like herpes?  I forgot to add that the blister is painless, but my eye is a bit watery. Other than that it's fine and my eyesight is good. Considering how this all developed in a matter of a week after I had unprotected sex it can't be much else than herpes..

Hey I see that they also sell the pill form in 100 mg and 500 mg form. Do you think this is as affective? They have the regular and extract version of the pill. Which would you think is the right one to get? And how many pills per day to get the same effect of say 16 seeds?

I had an IGG test  and the ranges were out of range and high  HSV 1 was 42 and HSV 2 was 19 so I guess it was accurate but the problem now is I can't figure out when or who I got it from. In 2018 to 2019 when I was with my ex I was STD tested but not sure if herpes was included but my ex was supposed to get tested but refused. I experienced some trauma with him and didn't date until a year and a half later so I'm confused. The guy I dated after the ex who didn't want to be tested I told them a week ago about my results he was trying to be there for me and understanding,I told him to get tested but to request a herpes blood test , because he had no noticeable lesions or bumps ever is what he said and I never noticed any on him now he has shut down all his social media and I can't reach him. Hoping he's okay, I feel bad because in 2018 I did have what I was told it was an abrasion that tingled but at my doctor the day I was tested they told me it wasn't herpes but I think it was only a visible diagnosis. I keep having it reoccur from time to time

Hello "FeelingLost".... your fears and concerns are understandable but, nothing you've described regarding the sexual encounter would cause you to contract herpes.... further, your symptoms are not herpes related.  Best of all, your doctor is correct, your results don't show any herpes here.  You can relax.... definitely have your GP take a look at things and see what might be causing the symptoms but, again, none of them are typical herpes related.  I wish you the best in terms of talking to your wife about this encounter.... hopefully she will understand and you both can work through this amicably.  We all make mistakes.... be careful not to beat yourself up too hard over this.... you can become so racked with guilt that you start imagining physical symptoms.  Best of luck.... and take care..... come back to the site if you have questions.
