Hi everyone. I had testing yesterday for type 2 (genital) herpes. It was on a friday, so I have the joy of going through weekend before knowing the results. The last few years of internet dating after divorce has brought me to this point in my life ( I'm not a fool and the writing is on the wall). I'm currently swinging between panic, acceptance and depression. I live in a smaller community and I know word will travel fast. Dating has been difficult for me before this and now I feel it will be next to impossible. I guess the fear of social acceptance, guilt over possibly having infected another unknowingly and not so much the actual symptoms weighs heaviest on my mind. Thanks for listening.....

What made you go for a test - did you have symptoms you suspect are herpes?

Yes a few days ago I had 3 small blisters on my penis. Almost like pimples. I did a Google image search and some research and it was pretty apparent what the diagnosis will be. On a positive note I've learned that the most accurate test is swabbing the area while the outbreak is fresh. The Dr put me on Valtrex for a week just to err on safety and minimize discomfort. The areas are pretty much healed 4 days after the outbreak. I wonder if there is scarring or decreased sensitivity long term in affected areas. I tan on a regular basis and initially noticed the discoloration that led me to examine myself more closely.

I've read that the sores do not produce scarring - that is--if you leave them alone and I also do not believe you would lose sensitivity.

So with the sores being apparent, did you have a culture done by your doctor as well as blood tests for hsv1 and hsv2 separately?

I hope that you "dodged the bullet" and did not get the virus and it's something else that can be taken care of----you never know

Yah, dating and finding love is tough as it is. I know how you feel. I'm sorry you are going through this... It's been 8 years now for me.... What I have learn from all these years living with H is that it's not as big of a deal as most people think it is..... It's not death threatening in any way. Just a little skin problem that pops out every now and then,... From my experience, Just take your meds and over time the out breaks get better... There is a lot of people with H. I suggest a dating site.. I was once a member of MPWH. There are attractive people through out the states...

Good LUCK,

I'm new, i just found out that i have HSV 1 about a week ago. i really don't know what's in store for me. I'm so depressed everything i do since i found out seems pointless, i'm full of guilt, and regrets. I blame myself for what i'm going through, i just hope things get better and to be able to enjoy life again. All i wanted was to be happy but with this i doubt it

Hi, everyone. So, I found out yesterday that I tested positive for HSV 1 and negative for HSV 2, based on a culture swab earlier in the week. I'm thoroughly terrified right now. I'm in the middle of what.... up till now, anyway.... has been an amicable divorce from my wife. She's out of town till the end of the month, so she does not even know yet. I'm going to tell her when she returns.

My fears right now: Can I shake hands with people? Will I infect my family (I have two daughters) simply by being around them? Will I be lonely the rest of my life? Objectively, I know that the worst part of herpes is the social stigma. The effects of the condition itself really aren't a big deal, and your body gets better at fighting it off. But still. I know my wife will not take this well, especially since I'm sure it's due to me making a very bad choice last week (when I was out of town...) Anyway, need as much morale support as I can get right now. Thanks.

Hi Emma88 ---

Have you had symptoms? You mentioned having HSV1, but didn't specify where. Do you know if it is oral or genital?

What is making you feel guilty? I want to ask you --- would you feel guilty if you got the flu or the chickenpox or some other virus?

What part of your body was swabbed, nightowl77?

In other words, where do you have HSV? Genital? Oral?

If it is only in those places (one, the other or both), you can't pass it by shaking hands.

It is possible to get herpes simplex on the hands (herpetic whitlow), but not common. I figure you would have mentioned it if that were the case?

Hi!

From what the doctor told me is just oral, at the moment there is no way to tell whether is genital since i never experienced an ob or anything like that, but doctor told me that as soon as i experience something out of the ordinary to go see her to do a swab test to find out ! but I'm thinking is not genital never had anyone do oral sex on me, but there is always a possibility that i infected myself somehow. i never been sexually active but maybe somehow it happened. i feel guilty because i wasn't careful enough about who i was kissing, and having HSv 1 is not so much of a burden, what bothers me is that maybe i infected others.

Emma, what prompted you to be tested for HSV? It is not usually part of routine testing panels.

Have you ever been tested for it before?

If not, there is a very good chance you have had this for a long time. Most humans get HSV-1 as oral herpes, and it is typically contracted during childhood by way of casual (non-sexual) contact.

Most kids get it from something like a kiss on the cheek from their old auntie, or by sharing a saliva-covered toy with another child. It is not anything to feel guilty about, and probably has nothing to do with not being "careful enough about who you were kissing."

It is estimated that about 80% of adults in North America have oral herpes, so it would be very difficult to avoid all of them!

Try to let go of the guilt feelings. There is no reason for them. You are in the vast statistical majority of humans. Far more people have this than do not have it.

@cas9 actually I think it’s you who doesn’t understand proof, proof by nature is subjective, so what is proof to me might not be proof to you... I have seen many cases where people have nothing to gain sharing their stories about herpes, and healing themselves, now if you continually search for this you’ll find it in comment threads or perhaps blogs.... perhaps they are lying? Well...Maybe some, but to think everyone who has claimed to heal themselves of herpes is a liar is simply a belief...  if you wanna believe that, go ahead, but after careful  analysis of many stories and researching the virus myself I am convinced the body can rid itself of herpes, what comes in, can come out, it just takes time and effort... But I like to keep it simple, God can heal anything so at this point you guys are just speaking nonsense

So my 20 year old daughter and I just found out she has genital herpes.  She is away at college and dealing with it on her own.  I am trying to be as supportive as I can by reading everything I can find from reputable sites.  She is staying busy this week with as she is involved with her schools freshman orientation for the new class coming in.  She was told by an urgent care doctor that she had it Visually, they did a blood test and called her to confirm it is herpes.  I told her to ask what type and she was told they don’t really type anymore because there is to much gray area but that it is a new infection. From what I have read that seems odd and she should find out what type.  I told her to inform anyone she may have had sex with in the last 6 months, she said she told the guy and he was an ass about it which of course makes the emotional side worse.  She is emotionally a wreck about it and I am trying to help her understand it’s not the end of the world.  Of course being 20 she feels she will not have the chance to meet anyone who would want to date her now. Any advice would be great....she is still in the middle of her first outbreak but I think the antiviral has been helping since she went to the doc as soon as she thought something wasn’t right.  I just want to help her as best I can!

Sorry for the long post. Just giving some backstory..... Hello. I'm new to this site. I was told I had HSV2 about 5 years ago. I had no clue because I never had any symptoms. I was just getting some blood work done while pregnant after switching to a new ob/gyn and this was discovered. Pregnancy was ended for personal reasons. Still afterwards never had any outbreaks or symptoms or anything. Fast forward to June I started feeling irritated down there. I was dealing with a lot of stress at this time. I ended up taking a pic of what it looked like down there so I could see what was going on. I only saw 1 spot. In the pic you will see the spot on top. It always just looked like a crater or something. It never blistered up or popped or crusted up. I knew I had the virus so I started researching outbreaks and pics and things. I wasnt sure if this was an out break or not because most of what I was dealing with didnt match up. I never felt sick. It didn't hurt to sit or wear panties. I didnt have any tingling or itching or burning sensation. I just felt irritated. I know every case is different though. So then I researched some home remedies and I ended up buying lysine 1000 mg to take and also used tea tree oil and acv diluted w/ water. Once I started messing with it, it started burning when urine got on the spot. And I think I didn't dilute the acv enough. I took 2 lysine pills a day until I wasnt feeling anything down there. So after a few days this healed up and everything was fine again but the spot never really went away. Things have been settled down and no stress since then. All of a sudden yesterday morning I started feeling that same irritation again. This morning I felt around down there and felt nothing so I took a pic again and the thing on bottom is what I found. I put some acv and  tea tree oil on it again.  And same as last time...ever since I touched it, it's been hurting just a tad and it looks exactly the same. I'm not sure if this is a outbreak or not but I'm pretty sure it is. I'm just not experiencing most of the symptoms I read about. Can someone give me their opinion please? Thank you.
