Pain in scrotum, groin area

Recommended Posts

yapp

Hi ! I am new to this forum, but I look forward to helping others, and hopefully get some help for my condition.

I got Herpes from an unprotected encounter with a girl that have HSV2.

After a day or so I got serious rash in my groin area. I went to the doctor and he treated me for fullicolitis (ingrown hair), with antibiotics, because my symptoms was red itchy rash in my pubic area.

The itchy feeling didnt really go away, and the next doctor meeting I got meds for jock itch, because he now taught it had become a fungal- condition. Not sure if it helped or not. Now I am on a course of Valtrex, and I think it helps a little bit. Not really sure.

I have had three outbreaks, and they last like a few days. The outbreaks are not the main problem. The problem is that I have daily pain in my scrotum and groin area. It feels like the skin is itching. I have never had this before I got genital herpes. The OB is not any problem, because its not that bad. But the constant pain in my groin is

terrible. Is there anything I can do? Has anyone else had similar experiences? Will it go away by itself in the end?

Hi Yapp ---

You mention all these treatment guesses your doc has made, but you don't mention any actual testing. Did the doc ever do any laboratory tests of any kind that showed you have HSV2? If so, what type of testing was done?

Your diagnosis seems uncertain at this point (to me). That makes it difficult to suggest that any of your current treatments, or anything else you could try, would help.

I did take HSV1 & 2 tests twice. The first was negative. The second was positive for HSV2. My doctor didnt want me to take that many tests for it, but I insisted, since I knew the girl I had sex with had HSV2. And it seemed like the only reason for my pain was herpes. I was negative for any other STD.

It feels like some kind of nerve- issue. Because it is not constant. It is better in the morning when I have been relaxed in my body, and it progressively gets worse throughout the day.

I have been thinking it might be thrush, or something, but none of the medications for that have worked. Just wish it was gone, because the herpes outbreaks doesnt bother me at all. They are not severe compared to this. This constant pain in my groin is killing me.

@RealisticGal, I guess you dont know how it feels like since it has to do with pain in testicles, but thanks for trying to see for a solution. Do you know if others have had longterm pain in their groin because of herpes? This is not outbreaks btw, at least not visible to the naked eye.

Hi yapp ----

What you are describing sounds to me like neuralgia --- nerve pain. You are correct that I do not have testicles. Nevertheless, I am all too familiar with nerve pain.

Look for info about Post Herpetic Neuralgia. Perhaps that will help solve this for you.

I had groin/buttocks pain too. I Took ibuprofen or aleve everyday for at least a couple days which only helps a little. I noticed a big improvement when i ate the biggest leanest steak from my local resturant. It sounds crazy but the next day i felt better. I would advise something like the "Texas Roadhouse". You have to keep your strength up by eating. This helped for me but it could do the opposite for someone else. Im also taking lots of probiotics like Acidphilus which seems to be helping alot. Goodluck. The body can heal itself....

I have the same problem...I know how you feel I have been taking Lyrica anD It has helped. I agree with the comment about nerve damage. It is so unfortunate but I know that there are people who suffer from the pain in their nerve endings. I hope this helps you let me know if youhave any other questions. I only wish i only had to deal with the outbreaks. However this constant pain is sometimes unbearable. You mentioned that it gets better in the morning...I have the same symptoms!!! Thank you for sharing your not the only person that is going through this. I'm with you!

Realisticgirl, carl2500 and solrojo:

I am so happy to hear that there are others that struggled with the same issue as me. I have felt so alone... Until now I have been googleing about it, and I never seem to find herpes to be the cause of it. I am on Valtrex now, but not really sure it helps much. I think the pain is worse when my immune-system is low. I will check up on Lyrica. Is it Lycine? I have heard it helps others too.

It has been serious pain in my groin for the last 6 months or so. Im getting sick of it. Before I even taught about ending it all in a bad way.. but I got my head straight and figured out that was just the easy way out. Hope others with similar problems could come with suggestions for help. Because doctors for sure are no help at all !

I will check up on Lyrica. Is it Lycine?

Lyrica and Lysine are two completely different things.

Lyrica is a prescription medication which is classified as an anti-convulsant.

Lysine is an amino acid that can be taken as a supplement, but also occurs naturally in many foods.

I have not used Lyrica, but have taken a related drug -- Neurontin. All I can tell you is, all drugs have potential side effects. If you try Lyrica, be very careful.

Do you recommend Neurotin?

I am pretty much willing to try anything..

I was not using Neurontin for anything related to herpes simplex, so I cannot comment on it one way or the other for your problem.

Hi, just a little update!

A few months ago I was prescribed Atarax which is a strong antihistamine, which is good against itchyness and similar stuff. It only made me drowsy, and did not really help for my symptoms which is not itch on the skin. My itch/burn- feeling is more from below and up, and is most likely nerve- related.

This week I went to the doctor for the xxxxx- time, and said I think this is some kind of post- herpetic neurolgia. Or nervepain caused by a herpes virus. The doctor said it could be the case, and was willing to give me some medication for this.

The doctor gave me Tegretol, which is often used for people with postherpetic neurolgia casued by herpes zooster. I have to start easy, and step up the dosages. The medication is supposed to help the brain not absorb the signals that are wrong. If the problem is postherpetic neurolgia, there is a nerve damage caused by the herpes virus, and the nerve is continuing to send messages to my brain that there is something wrong, even though there is nothing wrong any more, since the virus has gone back into my body.

Anyway, I have also been struggling with nausea over the last 4-5 months, which I think is related to the stress I have had because of this constant pain in my groin. I am taking the atarax that I had been given before, because it is supposed to help for nausea too.

After I started the medication I feel tremendously better!! I have only taken 100mg I think if tegretol to start with, and I will try to go up to 200mg morning and night in a few days. (the doctor said the medication should be adjusted upwards). I will continue to update on this. I truly believe this is nerve-damage, and that Tegretol might be the answer to make it my life tolerable again!

Thank you for the help here. If anyone out there has similar problems, that they got after getting hsv2, I would like to hear your stories.

yapp, are you still on Valtrex? I have heard plenty of people (including myself) complaining about similar symptoms...it seems like all of them are on suppressive Valtrex and that this may be the cause...also, you say it gets worse throughout the day...just wondering, what time do you take your Valtrex?

Hi! I would like to hear more about your condition, from your initital infection up until today.

I stopped taking Valtrex a while before I started the nerve- medication because it didnt seem to help for anything. The nerve medisin helpes with the nerve- condition ALOT! I am only on 200 mg Tegretol morning and night, and I am supposed to step it up to 800mg a day, but I will not do that before my last exam is over in case of side effects. I take Tegretol combined with Atarax wich is helping with my stress wich I feel leads to nausea.

I would like to know how your treatment is going, I was just diagnosed with neuralgia pain due to infection, possibly herpes - testing in 2 weeks. I was prescribed Cymbalta for the neurological pain which has been helping somewhat but at the end of the day still have flare ups. Has the Tegretol worked for you, and how does that effect future outbreaks do you still get prodome or tingling warning of an upcoming outbreak, that is one of the fears i have taking the nerve meds that i wont know when a new outbreak is coming and thus when to prepare for it.

Hi matt238!

The tegretol did not help as much I as hoped for. I stopped taking it in january. It made me more drowsy than anything else. As it is for now, im not sure what to do. I have an appointment with a urologist in a couple of weeks, perhaps he can help. As for now im just taking painkillers with Codeine. It helps, but also makes me sleep alot more. I also try using Eurax, which is an anti-itch cream, and it seem to help a bit as well.

The worst problem for me now is that I struggle with nausea whenever I get a bit stressed, like in social gatherings and stuff. Especially if there is food involved. Not sure how to handle this one. Any suggestions?

hope to hear from you, and others who have similar problems! Tell as much as you can.

Its weird that your doctor gave you Tegretol. I have Epilepsy and thats what I use as an anticonvulsant. Its off label use is for Trigeminal Neuralgia (the nerve pain in the face), but it NO WAY does it ever help my Post Herpetic Neuralgia in my legs.

Your doctor should try something else.

Any suggestions for either the nervepain or the nausea?

Both seem to be related to stress in a way. The nervepain is alot less than before (I think), and Im trying to control the nausea by breathing-exercises.

I dont know if you want to try Cymbalta, it seems to help me. I think its main use is for anxiety so be careful if you use it as you cannot go off of it cold turkey, you need to ween yourself off by lowering dosage and take every other day instead of every day. I only been on it 2 weeks but so far havent noticed any side effects, it may even help me deal with the stress of having the neuralgia pain. My nerve pain i would say is moderate, during the ob was severe at times and now is just mild after taking cymbalta, i will keep you up to date on how it is working for me as i am rather new to all of this including H, associated pain and cymbalta

How are things going any updates? The cymbalta I am taking seems to be not enough to get back to feeling normal, meaning I still get pain that affects my daily life. Going to see a neurologist next week to try to get to the bottom of the cause or at least get medication to manage it. Two of the commonly prescribed are lyrica and neurotonin. Currently I have been taking over the counter anti inflammatory aleve it helps take the edge off and seems to justify the nerve cause over a muscle type cause. Still having testicular tenderness, pain inside groin and some days mad sciatic pain. I will let you know what happens from the neuro visit.

Hi Matt!

I dont take any meds now. I just cope with the pain, and try to just keep going on with my life, even though its hard from time to time. I seem to have developed some kind of cronic nausea, which I seem to get when im in stressed situations. Any idea what cause it?

I was a few months on Zovirax which is to prevent herpes outbreaks. I got outbreak one or two times but thats nothing compared to the nerve-pain. Not sure what to do about it other than pray that it goes away by it self. Now its been over 1 year since I got it, and the pain started. I feel better, but still far from 100%.

What kind of anti-inflammatory are you using? And how do you use it? It doesnt irritate the skin over time? I would like to use some of that too, but im worried it will damage the skin, so it will be worse.. =)

with best regards

Just using over the counter NSAIDs currently, they shouldn't be taken too long because you can develop stomach ulcers sometimes, I need to find an alternative soon hopefully the neuro will have something. You could try capsacin cream, spelling error, suppose to be a good anti inflammatory cream, they also came out with a rx version which is a patch you wear for an hour and it suppose to provide relief for up to 3 months. It's called qutenza need a doctor prescription and is used for shingles nerve pain.

Hi Matt and Yapp,

Sorry to hear what you guys have been going through...I've been dealing with this problem for more years than I care to remember, I've been to neurologists and even the pain management clinic (it wears you down over time) I'm now on lyrica and also take painkillers when the flare up's get to bad to cope with.

If there's anything I can do to be of assistance just let me know and I will do my best to help.

I have been suffering from the pins and needles and burning for 5 months! I am now on Gabapentin and Lyrica! I still feel the pain but I can at least funtion. The drugs (especially Lyrica) make me dizzy and I am unable to drink as well (I am a wine collector). I have HVS 1&2.

No it’s not a fact at all. How can it be a correlation if it happens no more than chance? Remember 70-80% of people using PW have herpes.
    • BeautyLover321
Hello! Thanks so much for your reply. I was told (and believe) I have HSV 2. They told me that on the phone; it was confirmed through swab. I have never taken a blood test or been tested for it otherwise. I've read mixed reviews about HSV1 providing protection-- because some studies seem to allude that it does. If this is true- it makes sense because I never had chicken pox or HSV1 in my entire life so I think it explains why I caught HSV2 from a one night experience (just my luck and just my own theory) Although I still experience twitching in my body -- I feel happy that the valtrex every other day suppresses it. But I do wonder, because I'm experiencing such reduced symptoms; if my shedding is reduced too. I doubt it but just a thought.  Anyways - I can live with condoms but I don't want to.. so I'm hoping for some guidance
    • MikeHerp
This is no great surprise that HSV is pushed back in ExcisionBio's pipeline.  I'd be surprised if it isn't pushed back again. The chart they put out is painfully uninformative.  Sloppy.  And that's a red flag in and of itself. My guess is that those arrows are progress rather than efficiency, but it's not completely clear.  But if a scientific company can't get this chart right, then I really wonder what other mistakes they are making. I don't have a ton of confidence in this.  But we'll see.  I'm glad that it seems they are trying to do something.  I think CRISPR could be a solution to HSV (some kind of solution).  But I question whether it will be ExcisionBio that makes it in the end.
    • MikeHerp
Good to know.  I don't think this is a listed company, but from what I've read, they've gotten decent funding.  Around $70 million.  Most of that probably won't go to HSV research, but it's good they have some money. By comparison, ExcisionBio has raised $10 million.
    • MikeHerp
The fact that Admedus is farming this out, kind of tells you it's a long shot at best.  It's good that it hasn't been abandoned.  But I'm doubtful much will come of this.  But maybe new knowledge about what doesn't work will come, and that's always helpful.
