Hi everyone,

I found out last week that I have oral herpes after a cold sore appeared on my lip. I have really been depressed and cannot do anything. Its not painful and I went to the doctor and he gave me valtrex.

So, the problem is initially, my cold sore reduced went through it phases, after my blisters brusted it kinda stopped movement altogether. Its now stuck in a phase just kind of hard and been like that for almost 3 days. It has been 8 days since my outbreak.

I dont know what to do I am still taking my prescribed valtrex. Has anyone been in this situation. Please help. I have not gone out of the house, I have exams, work and cannot focus on anything.

Thank you

Give it a little more time, the Valtrex will help it to heal. A first outbreak is always a little longer and stranger than subsequent outbreaks you will have. Please do not be depressed about a cold sore - more than 75% of the population get cold sores or carry the HSV1 virus. You really are being too hard on yourself when I am sure no one else would judge you. Do you look at someone with a cold sore differently? Personally, I think bad acne looks worse, and is more difficult to treat. Don't buy into the stigma! You could have been carrying the cold sore virus your whole life, gotten it from an old lady kissing you in your stroller - why the shame?

To keep your immune system up to prevent future outbreaks, try taking Lysine. And ask your doctor to write a prescription for Valtrex that you can pick up for when you have symptoms - keep it around, and if you feel any tingling in your lips, take is asap. I really hope that you do get better soon, and that you realize that you are your own worst critic. People at work and exams are busy with their own problems hon, they probably will not even notice anything is different. And many of them suffer from cold sores too, and I'm sure they don't want to be judged for it, either.

Thanks for your kind words. Its just when I go outside anywhere I feel like everyone is looking at me.

Another question- Should I avoid taking hot showers while I have a sore on my lip. Does it irritate it or something?

Thank you

I don't think water temperature makes any difference, but do make sure to dry the area thoroughly when you're done - the sores always heal more quickly when they are allowed to dry out.

I know how you feel, but I promise no one is looking at you the way you think they are! People are wrapped up in themselves for the most part, and if anyone really cares that you have a cold sore, that person is an asshat you should stay away from anyway.

I am taking the same medication, and I have noticed that on occasion, it does come back, not as horrible as when it first began happening, but like little patches, small areas. I'd just refill my prescription, take as directed, and it'd go away. I took my last pill today, and I have been talking vitamins every day. Did not know about elderberry, I've been taking tumeric, B12, echinacea, vitamin C, lysine, cranberry and anything else that helps promote immune health as well as skin.
