First time ever having unprotected sex with a woman who I as well as any other man wouldn't for a second suspect that she'd be carrying an std, burns me. She was smart, fresh out of college, had her own, and had an incurable std. Now I'm apart of this stigma that will never go away. The thing that really pisses me off is I come on hear for comfort and have people tell me that hsv is just a simple virus. F*ck it aint'!!!!!! An incurable sexually transmitted disease that can bring you both physical and psychological pain. I as well as any other woman who'd I have the balls to disclose this info with will see me as the plague. A year and a half of this sh*t and I'm still pissed.

Herpes is just a simple virus. 80% of adults have it in one form or another. The flu virus kills 30,000 people a year, so next to that, this is nothing. You can live a normal life with this, I know, I have. I have dated many women and have NEVER been rejected because of this.

Many people have told me that getting herpes changed their lives for the better. They have reevaluated their lives and start eating better, working out and are more selective in whom they date.

How you perceive this virus will determine how you live with it. If you see it as a plague the women you approach will probably as well. I think of it as nothing and so have the women I have dated.

Good luck!

JB

I understand how u can be upset... I had all the same emotions... Truth is, I had to slap myself in the face and say listen bitch this wasn't your fault.. Sometimes bad things happen to good people.. U don't have a time machine so stop feeling sorry for yourself. Yes sex is a wonderful part of life but it is not the only part. U need to get off ur ass and live ur life. This virus doesn't define me.. I'm not a f*ckin virus.. If someone wants to judge who I am because of something with the equivalency of a cold sore, they that person isn't worth my time. Now I'm not saying its the best thing that ever happened but seriously ppl with diabetes, obesity, HIV, cancer, Alzheimer's all have something more to worry about. I hope even after a year and a half of "this shit" really doesn't keep u from being urself and living a normal life. Sometimes u have to just have to say "what the f*ck".. There's no changing this.. So why let it ruin ur life?

I understand you're upset, I was too and I think everyone is when they find out. I still get depressed about it and it's been 2 months since my diagnosis.

But do you realize that saying no one would ever suspect the woman you slept with had an STD because she is "smart, fresh out of college, had her own..." continues the stigma? Women and men with herpes can still be attractive, intelligent, and successful. People with herpes don't look like drug addicts and prostitutes. Herpes affects people of all races, religions, and economic groups. It doesn't discriminate. It's also spreading around college campuses like wildfire. I believe I got it in college despite being an honors student (just goes to show you that intelligence doesn't matter at all when it comes to herpes).

This woman might not have even known she had herpes because even intelligent people don't have the facts about this virus. They think they need to have outbreaks all the time to have it. Did you know 1 in 4 women in the US has herpes? That's how common it is.

Are you 100% sure you got it from this woman? You can get herpes while using a condom and you can have it for years without ever having an outbreak. You can also get it from oral sex.

Sorry about the bad news However...

But you would have probably gotten it anyhow even if you had worn it. Herpes is a disease of the skin, not of bodily fluids. So if your skin had contact with her skin, you get it. Pretty simple. I suppose that's why so many people are infected with this sneaky little f#cker!!!

Having HSV-2 has not bothered me at all for casual sex. I'm just avoiding sex during outbreaks, on suppressive therapy and using condoms every time with casual partners. Since my outbreaks appear on top of my penis, even during an outbreak the risk is minimal if I put a condom on as soon as I take my underwear off.  I guess it might be a slightly different case for a girl as if you have external lesions around your groin you could still infect someone even using a condom. And of course, condoms can break, which has happened to me over 10 times and caused myself to get infected in the first place.  I see it as a much more difficult now having a serious relationship, because I can't feel much with a condom on and really want stop using them. However, I don't want to put my new girlfriend to any risk - I would feel terrible if I infected her.

Does anyone have experience about people's reactions to Herpes in Asia? Personally I live in Thailand where I also caught the virus as a condom broke 4 years ago.  Unfortunately I infected my ex-girlfriend with HSV-2. This was just after I had caught the virus myself and we had sex before I noticed and realised what it was. In the beginning, a local doctor told me I have just hurt my foreskin with my jeans' zipper and the tests came as negative. After getting tested later it came as positive.  Anyways, my ex-gf (well educated, professional, 26 years old then) she had no idea what Herpes was in the first place. She didn't really care too much about it and didn't bother to get tested. During our 3 year relationship we kept having unprotected sex as usual and she never had any issues until at the end one day. She had a very minor outbreak once and nothing after that (lucky her, no like myself who gets terrible symptoms non-stop). I know she has a strong immune system, because she was never sick despite myself having bad colds quite often. In any case, she could not care less about this virus and didn't mind at all.

I've seen a lot of hysteria surrounding Herpes in Europe and the US. What has been your experience in South-East Asian countries like Thailand? Do people perceive HSV-2 as a worrying disease?

The jury is still out as there needs to be additional experiments. Editas' results make me believe dosing was insufficient among other issues.
