Valtrex - ?

My doctor gave me Valtrex for the herpes infection. What's the normal dosages? I have read that 500mg 1x a day is normal but others say 500mg 2x a day? I want to make sure that my doctor is treating it as agressively as possible.

It's horrible...I was diagnosed on March 1 and it doesn't seem to be getting any better at all. In fact, the itch is even worse than it was .... so I just want to make sure that what my doctor is doing -- is the right thing.

it depends how bad your outbreak is.

if its horrible and you cant walk(i think urs isnt if i rem from a previous post you said it didnt hurt that bad) take 2 tablets (1000) a day.

if its isnt killing you take 1 (500)

normal suppressive is 1 tablet (500) every day

it takes a few days for the meds to kick in, it took 4-5 for me to even see any diffrence i had a "horrible" one so i was taking 2 twice a day (if u are going to take this much> i suggest def, asking your doctor first)

My doctor gave me Valtrex 500mg 2x a day for 10 days. Then she told me to cut it back to 1x a day. My outbreak is really uncomfortable. It burns and itches horribly. I've been on meds for 5 days now and it just seems to be worse. I have pain in my back and all the way down my legs. My doctor told me to take Aleve for the pain and it works -- but it does nothing for the itching or burning. Will it ever go away???

it goes away, i know it seems like it takes forever but you have to realize that theres alot of stuff your body is dealing with now, my first outbreak, lasted a month. but every week it got better.

for the itching/burning> try taking a bath with epsom salt, or they have these great oatmeal mixes that help with itchyness.

are you talking about burning when you pee? cause i will SWEAR by is peeing in the tub- just streach your legs as far as u can, and go. it is the 1 thing, that kept me from wanting to kill myself, peeing was horrible until i did this

Waxed -- ty. No, the burning finally went away when I was peeing. It took about 2 or 3 days on the valtrex for that to happen. Thank god! No...my genital area just itches and burns. It's all inflamed and swollen. I don't see any sores -- just looks like one big sore :(

OMG...I can't stand this for a month. I will definitely try some oatmeal bath.

I was on 1 gram of Valtrex, or 1000 mg.s 3 times a day when I had my big outbreak...and it did nada for me. Didn't stop the ob or lessen the severity and it didn't stop me from promptly breaking out into my next big outbreak. I think it works for most people, but not me. Plus, I felt like I was having prodromal symptoms the entire time I was on it. Things that have given me some relief are Tea tree oil and Chloraphor. Tea tree oil is way less expensive than chloraphor and can be found in any drug store or natural remedy type store.:-?

Hi! and let me start by saying hang in there.. its gets so much easier! Your body the first time, is fighting like crazy for you.. the subsequent times, it has the proper tools ready to help you fight off the virus. Valtrex will help you out and can keep future partners safe. My last BF of 4 years, never got infected because I was careful and protected him. Trust me, 6 years later, I get nothing! the outbreaks diminish in intensity and duration, and frequency, and life does go back to normal..Stay strong!

Really Funny Story to Forget about the pain for a second

"for the itching/burning> try taking a bath with epsom salt, or they have these great oatmeal mixes that help with itchyness"

My only symptom was a very small abraision type mark that didn't go away and hurt like a mother. So while I was awaiting test results, the doctor suggested having an epson salt bath, so I went out and bought a huge container of epson salt.

My 12 year old son who was cleaning for me put the container in the kitchen cupboard thinking it was table salt because it said salt on the label.

I did not know it was in there until about a week later when my daughter was trying to make "boxed" mashed potatoes and the recipe called for salt. I didn't watch what she was doing but it did not turn out and looked horrible.

She had made this many times before. I just made another package and didn't think anything of it.

The next day, she was eating dinner and brought out some salt in her hand. She sprinkled some of it on her food and then said to me

"Mom, I think there is something wrong with the salt" It was then that she showed it to me and I noticed it was the epson salts in the palm of her hand.

I never laughed so hard in my life. Made me forget about everything that has been going on just for a minute! (Or two)

Hope this brings a smile to some of your faces.

Take care all

To give some context I hve been suffering with this for the last 6/7 years this came about after I had varicella zoster on the inside of my body a week after I started getting clusters of spots on the top of my buttock they are not painful as such can be itchy at times but majority of the time I don’t feel it when I have an outbreak. I’ve been to various doctors who say it’s a fungal skin infection or a bacterial skin infection. I’ve asked if it’s herpes but they will say it’s not without even testing it.

Hello there @momma267 and welcome. There is no reason to believe that what you have there is other than a pressure sore, something that has emerged from rubbing with clothing or butt cheeks and exacerbated by bacteria or yeast.  Note that the first you’d learn of herpes is unlikely to be on your butt, instead where it enters your body, this is usually within the vaginal lips for females.

So to begin with, I am 26 and have been with the same partner for 8 years. I have only been with three people ever, one completely protected and the other we were both our firsts. I got this rash on my but while pregnant and my doctor said she was testing for it and I'm so confused. I've had two babies, breastfeed, and never had anything as much as a cold sore. Does this look like something anyone has experienced? I used fragrant soap down there and am hoping it's contact dermatitis or a heat rash from sweating and gaining so much weight.  Advice would be helpful. I'm stressing out a bit as I am pregnant. @WilsoInAus could you kindly have a look :) also how long does it typically take for herpes blisters to develop into sores

Hi, it is me again, apologies for the recent influx of posts. I've noticed a slightly raised area on the middle of my top lip with what i feel are some bumps. i do have a habit of biting my lips a fair bit and this area is frequented by my teeth. I haven't noticed any unusual/abnormal tingling or burning or pain sensations. the photos are a bit difficult to focus on them but do these seem like the start of cold sores? note: I will be visiting the drs for an std checkup in the coming week. https://imgur.com/gallery/YLVA5us
