I have been married for over 30 years in what I think is a monogamous relationship. I just acquired HVS1 genitally. My husband has always had intermittent cold sores and it looks like I got this from his cold sore. My type specific test came back negative for both H1 and 2 but my gyno has told me that it is most likely H1 because of his status. Also gyno said this must be the first outbreak for me since no antibodies showed. I did not even realize he had a cold sore recently. But he said he did. In your 60's you dont even think of this but here I sit.

He went to have blood test to find out what is going on but my question is we know he has H1 because of the coldsores but if he has H2 would it show up in the blood tests if he didnt have an OB or shedding? I hate to think the worst but my luck has not been very good lately.

Why isn't there more education about herpes? This should be taught in the schools!

how long did you wait before gettin tested?

my first ob came/happened- and when i got tested it said it was impossible i had herpes, RIGHT i know what i saw.

took 3 more test, before i got a positive.

if he had type 2 antibodies it would show up, but u said u have type 1 so he prob is type 1.

cause when your 12, the last thing you want to learn about sex is that your genitals can ruin your life. but i went to a pretty laid back school, and in high school we had the most open /disgusting sex ed class that scared us straight.

~~ not me apparently lol~~ but, i think the lack of sex ed in schools is based on the schools fear of things that arent "normal" like sex ed is just, a std is bad- and dont get prego- this is how to use a condom.

Viche, recently I was diagnosed with HSV1 also. I have always had sex with condoms but never thought about getting herpes from oral sex. During the ob I was swabbed for a culture and took a blood test at the same time. The culture came back positive for HSV1 and the blood tests negative for both; meaning, I had never had exposure to the virus before.

To answer your question, the blood tests should show whether he has antibodies to HSV1 and/or HSV2. The presence of antibodies indicate that the body was exposed to the virus and produced antibodies to fight it off. Check with your doctor that you had the type specific blood test - which I had.

I think that if you are in your 60s, you may not have too many breakouts. I've been reading alot and it seems the virus seems to wane after the age of 50 - you may want to ask your obgyn about this too.
