Tattoos & Outbreaks

Recommended Posts

My 21st birthday was just a couple days ago and like last year I want to get a tattoo. I've been infected with genital herpes since then so I'm very cautious about getting a new tattoo.

I know for whatever reason getting tattoos and body piercings can cause outbreaks for most people. I wanted to get it done this weekend (within the next 2 days) and discovered today I already have an outbreak starting. My fear is having the fresh, open tattoo while I'm having the ob at the same time.

So the question(s) is how do I do this? Should I wait until my ob is over before getting the tattoo to reduce risk of spreading or does it matter since I might end up with another one anyway? I was thinking of using latex gloves. Only touch and treat my tattoo with gloves on.

Any advice?

I don't know any link between getting a tattoo and having a breakout. I didn't get one and I had alot of work done on my back.

I did explain to my tattooist about having HSV and he was "so what - I wear gloves anyway" .

I used a cream from the tattooist an aloe vera one and used a tissue to apply it, so I didn't touch it.

Hope your breakout clears quickly

The connection between a body piercing/tattoo & HSV OB is this: When you get a piercing or tattoo, it basically is a 'new wound' that has to heal so your immune system is slightly compromised doing whatever it can to fight off any chance of infection to this new wounded area.

I would keep your immune system in good shape before you go for your body art and just hope for the best.

I recently got a tattoo during an outbreak on my hip region, the session was four hours long. I noticed one new bump as a result of the tattoo but during the healing process no more bumps have arisen and are completely healed. My suggestion is to take a few vitamin E pills, (they help in skin healing) in addition to taking extra safe care of the tattoo so no more complications could arise!
