weight loss & HSV2?

Has anyone else experienced unexplained weightloss when having first out break?

I am eating well but still seem to be losing weight. I'm not sure if it's stress related or HSV-2 related?

Thanks...

i have hsv-2 and i've noticed i don't have much of an appetite anymore i think it might be a side effect to some of the medication i'm taking i've lost like 7lbs since i had my first outbreak. it could also just be because i was having some depression from the news of having this.

Not necessarily from hsv itself but I think the antivirals have effected my appetite. I've lost about 5# since January without really trying. But since my first ob's of blisters 2 years ago I've lost 20# total without really trying. I thought it was more from depression. I've had hsv for at least 10 years.

I have lost about 7 pounds since January, when I was diagnosed. I don't really know what it is from...I have changed my diet and don't eat chocolate or nuts of any kind or drink caffenated drinks. I have attributed it to that, however it could be from my anti-virals because I tend to not have much of an appetite.

I had my first outbreak 3 weeks ago, since then I've lost 23 pounds. I actually gave up smoking the day I found out I had herpes and my appetite increased.

I'm not taking any medication and still loosing weight, I'm assuming that rapid weight loss is a natural side effect of having herpes.

I'm going to try eating more fatty foods and see if this will stop my weight loss.

losing weight after getting herpes

I, too, lost weight - about 5 #s while trying to fight this virus off. I think some of it was a side effect of the acyclovir. another thing, I was depressed over getting this terrible shit. This is the worst shit I have ever gone through. after taking the acyclovir, I got a reaction to it - burning rash - which I thought was a symptom of the herpes. I have it in the rectum too and I'm afraid of spreading it to my eyes. I had tingly feelings over my eyes recently.

They told me I can never take any of the anti-virals now because I'm allergic to them. Yippee!

Witty, Have you looked at trigger foods and drinks to avoid?

Also, It would probably be very benificial to take natural suppliments to help boost your immune system.

I really don't want to take acylovir again because I've lost a lot of hair, as well as weight, from it.

I'm now taking L-lysine, B vit's, Vit C, zinc, cal-mag, olive leaf extract, and some chinese herbs.

I really think with regular hygiene you don't have to worry so much about spreading it to your eyes. Be careful with towel use...etc.

Take care!

Hi, Shayna,

At the same time that I first noticed the "bumps", I started having flu like symptoms (not unusual) and then had trouble regaining my appetite for about 3 weeks. Didn't feel nauseated or sick just no appetite. Lost 9 pounds. When I contacted a good friend for info (she's a nurse) she lent me a medical text book that clearly listed anorexia as a symptom of HSV (especially first outbreaks).

Interestingly, when I saw my trusty Dr., she said she could see I'd lost weight but it was definately NOT a symptom of HSV. I just needed to "turn off the worry button":? I have since read that weight loss is not uncommon in other medical journals as well. Also, since the punch biopsy I have begun to have loss of energy, tiredness and fluctuating appetite again as well as a MAJOR increase in genital symptoms (increased itching, swelling, soreness). My test results for the biopsy are at the dr.'s office but I can't get in to see the dr. for another week and a half.

Also, I contacted MDS labs which was said to carry the blood testing for HSV in British Columbia, but they no longer do..they did, however, refer me to a hospital in Vancouver (7 hour drive). If they do the testing, I am going there at the end of August and will definately go get tested!!

Let's hope the biopsy showed something definitive in the meantime.

Hope you are well. ms.;)

the dr uses a tool to take a tissue sample and sends it to the lab to analyze the tissue for, in this case, hsv but it can also be for cancer etc.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've only felt like eating two meals daily since I was diagnosed. I just feel depressed I guess. I haven't taken any meds yet. Not sure I need them at all. I feel like I need to be careful what I eat too since I know that is a concern with this infection. I'm still learning about that. I've lost about 5#s in the past month from the OB making me less active and from the diagnoses making me depressed.

Does anyone have any advice on how not to lose too much weight? Since I was diagnosed I have lost about 13 pounds and am a little worried about losing any more because it would be unhealthy for me. I don't want to start eating junk food or anything but the diet that I am on right now is not supporting any weight gain...

Hi leebee,

Are you taking anti virals?

It looks like the weight loss I had experienced was from the anti virals my doctor had given me for my first ob. I kept losing weight for a few weeks after I had finished taking them.

Now I've put back a few pounds and seem to have stabilized.

Keep eating healthy foods and maybe add suppliments.

It could be from stress if it's not from meds.

I had an IGG test  and the ranges were out of range and high  HSV 1 was 42 and HSV 2 was 19 so I guess it was accurate but the problem now is I can't figure out when or who I got it from. In 2018 to 2019 when I was with my ex I was STD tested but not sure if herpes was included but my ex was supposed to get tested but refused. I experienced some trauma with him and didn't date until a year and a half later so I'm confused. The guy I dated after the ex who didn't want to be tested I told them a week ago about my results he was trying to be there for me and understanding,I told him to get tested but to request a herpes blood test , because he had no noticeable lesions or bumps ever is what he said and I never noticed any on him now he has shut down all his social media and I can't reach him. Hoping he's okay, I feel bad because in 2018 I did have what I was told it was an abrasion that tingled but at my doctor the day I was tested they told me it wasn't herpes but I think it was only a visible diagnosis. I keep having it reoccur from time to time

Hello "FeelingLost".... your fears and concerns are understandable but, nothing you've described regarding the sexual encounter would cause you to contract herpes.... further, your symptoms are not herpes related.  Best of all, your doctor is correct, your results don't show any herpes here.  You can relax.... definitely have your GP take a look at things and see what might be causing the symptoms but, again, none of them are typical herpes related.  I wish you the best in terms of talking to your wife about this encounter.... hopefully she will understand and you both can work through this amicably.  We all make mistakes.... be careful not to beat yourself up too hard over this.... you can become so racked with guilt that you start imagining physical symptoms.  Best of luck.... and take care..... come back to the site if you have questions.

Hi (I’m really scared and feel really disappointed in myself and worried about my future), I had oral sex with a condom almost 3 weeks ago and a massage parlor. I also received a hand job at the same time prior to putting a condom on, also may have rubbed my penis on her back a little. Did not touch her genitals I don’t recall any sores on her back. After the event she handed me a pice of TP and after I took off the condom I wiped my penis head to clear away the excess ejaculation…this is where I suspect I got infected, she had just gone pee and wiped and maybe touched a sore or something and then I got it on my penis from the tp? Idk. I’m just flailing.   After this I’ve had discomfort on the skin below the head of my penis and 4 bumps for 2 weeks now, the bumps don’t seem to have changed in size. I also had frequent urination for about a week and have had dull pain in my groin on and off. I also have some pins and needles on the sides of my abdomen/trunk that get worse when I go out in the heat or get dehydrated. I’ve had a lot of trouble sleeping, likely due to guilt and shame and worry about the future.   so I got one test done at 10 days from the event (idk know if this can tell me anything… the doctor assured me it was 100% correct and I don’t have herpes. I was not physically examined). I got a full panel std. neg for everything. HSV-1 results: IgG 0.3 / HSV-2 IgG 0.9 hsv-1 IgM = 2.2 hsv-2 IgM = 3.0 (Reference V. Negative: Less than 9.0 Borderline: 9.0 to 11.0 Positive: Greater than 11.0) I have an appointment with my GP on Thursday, hoping he can help. Will likely go to a std testing service tomorrow to see if I can get in an antiviral proactively. Plan to get tested again this week.
