Older and wiser newbee

Hello,

I guess this is good news and bad news. I have had herpes simplex since I was 17 and I am still challenged by it at the age of 54. Good news is that I have led a mostly happy and productive life. Bad news is that I have tried every cure known to man to little avail. My recent outbreak was one of my worst, laying to rest the old adage that it will get better in time. I lost my speen in an accident along the way and perhaps that has made me more immune compromised. Yet, I don't recall any noticable change in herpes outbreaks pre and post splenectomy. I had an allergy induced sinus infection recently and a course of prednisone caused major eruption of my herpes virus. Now my doctor is recommending Flonase daily yet I wonder if this is not wise as it could continue to exaserbate my herpes.

I have spent the last weekend researching the issue. I cannot even describe to you the support and action I feel after going online compared to feeling like a lonely pariah in 1970 embarrassed to seek advice. The internet community is a wonderful boon to my generation. So I guess this longwinded intro is to acknowledge and appreciate those out there offering honesty and advice.

Thanks for sharing. I think you have a lot to offer (me) us on how to live Well with the virus long term.

I know that prednisone is a Powerful drug that can cause all kinds of problems. It can be almost a miracle drug at times, but the side effects can be brutal. I would think that taking that, along with having your spleen removed would be hard enough on your immune system to cause a nasty out-break. Does flonase have prednisone in it?

What this shows is that there is no cure, and the virus waits for opportunity to attack when we get run down, for whatever reason.

I hope you can get a handle on it soon!

Hi, I am new here too, I felt the same way to have found a lot of support here. I have weak immune system too, my WBC is half of the normal value. So I had out-break almost every month for a year. Right now, I am trying the echinacea and olive leaf and lysine to deal with it. Not sure about the result yet. You can find a lot of information on this website, also under different topics. We are not alone. Good luck.

steroids and corticosteroids are contraindicated for viral infections. in the case of viral infections the cdc warns against the use of these types of medications.
