New member, has partner with herpes

Hi everybody! I just joined this forum, and I have a problem that I need some help with:

I am embarking on a new relationship with a woman who told me she has genital herpes. She got it during protected sex (I know that's possible) from a guy who didn't bother to tell her.

She got it in July 2006 and had an outbreak. She was put on acyclovir (sp?) for three months, then stopped. She has not had an outbreak since and it has been almost one year.

I'm aware of the risks, including "sub-clinica shedding," which basically means that you can get it even when she's not in an outbreak, although I understand the chances are slim.

I have been tested positive for having the antibodies for herpes, which does not mean that I have it, only that at some time in my life I have been exposed to it. I have never had an outbreak or any signs of it.

My questions are:

Does having sex with her without a condom and when she is not in an outbreak pose a significant risk to me?

Does the fact that she has had no further outbreak bode well for her and for me not getting it?

Does the fact that I carry the antibodies make it less likely that I can get it, or more likely?

Can I get it from performing oral sex on her?

I will greatly appreciate any feedback/answers to my questions. Thanks much!

I thought that if a blood test showed antibodies that meant you have it and having no symptoms means that you are just a carrier like most of the men that have it.

Does having sex with her without a condom and when she is not in an outbreak pose a significant risk to me?

Well if you don't have it there is some risk because of the whole asymtomatic shedding thing that you can't predict when it is happening. Though I have heard of people having sex without protection and between OB's and the male never got infected over a 5 year relationship! It is less risk for men to get it from women then visa versa.

Does the fact that she has had no further outbreak bode well for her and for me not getting it?

This maybe good however it could be that her symptoms are so mild they go unnoticed.

Does the fact that I carry the antibodies make it less likely that I can get it, or more likely?

Again I am pretty sure if you have antibodies you already have it!

Can I get it from performing oral sex on her?

It depends on the type. If it is type1 genitally and you don't get cold sores already then yes but rarely happens. If it is type2 then no probably because type 2 doesn't really prefer to live in the oral region.

I am not a doctor so this is just my nursing and research that I am counting on!

again goodgirlbadluck you are giving false information hsv-2 can be orally you need to check your sources. either virus can live in either area hsv-2 orally is uncommon but not unheard of. please read up on this to make sure you know what your talking about. so for bilito to answer your question yes you could get it orally but if your doctor told you, you have been exposed that means you probably already have the virus and are not showing signs. doctors use the term exposed because its easier for them to say that then to say hey look you have herpes. i hope this helps you out if you are still wondering about the whole exposed in the past go get another test done by another doctor and ask them specifically if you have it.

One more question

Thanks for the feedback, it's very helpful. If I may ask just one more question, If having the antibodies indeed does mean I have it, does it necessarily mean that I have the genital version, or can I "have it" somewhere else?

either strain could be in either location so you could have it genitally or orally, or the same type in both locations, as blood testing only tells which type you have it, not which locations.

To give some context I hve been suffering with this for the last 6/7 years this came about after I had varicella zoster on the inside of my body a week after I started getting clusters of spots on the top of my buttock they are not painful as such can be itchy at times but majority of the time I don’t feel it when I have an outbreak. I’ve been to various doctors who say it’s a fungal skin infection or a bacterial skin infection. I’ve asked if it’s herpes but they will say it’s not without even testing it.

Hello there @momma267 and welcome. There is no reason to believe that what you have there is other than a pressure sore, something that has emerged from rubbing with clothing or butt cheeks and exacerbated by bacteria or yeast.  Note that the first you’d learn of herpes is unlikely to be on your butt, instead where it enters your body, this is usually within the vaginal lips for females.

So to begin with, I am 26 and have been with the same partner for 8 years. I have only been with three people ever, one completely protected and the other we were both our firsts. I got this rash on my but while pregnant and my doctor said she was testing for it and I'm so confused. I've had two babies, breastfeed, and never had anything as much as a cold sore. Does this look like something anyone has experienced? I used fragrant soap down there and am hoping it's contact dermatitis or a heat rash from sweating and gaining so much weight.  Advice would be helpful. I'm stressing out a bit as I am pregnant. Hi, it is me again, apologies for the recent influx of posts. I've noticed a slightly raised area on the middle of my top lip with what i feel are some bumps. i do have a habit of biting my lips a fair bit and this area is frequented by my teeth. I haven't noticed any unusual/abnormal tingling or burning or pain sensations. the photos are a bit difficult to focus on them but do these seem like the start of cold sores? note: I will be visiting the drs for an std checkup in the coming week. https://imgur.com/gallery/YLVA5us
