Hi im a38 yr old male. I used to get cold sores but hacent had one for many yrs aprox a decade. I recently started a newdiet for candida. All of the sudden i have a semi itchy red spot on my penis. Ive never had genital herpes. Ihavent had sex in 6plus yrs. im now stressed as ive met a woman i care about. Can genital herpes lay dormant that long. I have been masturbating alot more recently if that matters.

There is no real reason to suspect this is genital herpes. If you have had cold sores since childhood, then you have a well established HSV-1 infection. This poses a tiny risk to sexual parters outside of outbreaks, unless they themselves also have HSV-1.

As a male with an established oral HSV-1 infection the odds of a genital HSV-1 infection are negligible to non existent.

If you have had sex with a number of partners in the past then potentially consider testing for HSV-2. The woman you care about actually has a good chance of having herpes of some kind, including genital herpes. Perhaps mutually testing for all STDs and comparing notes is the best way to go here for the openness that full disclosure provides.

My genital h 2 stayed dormant for 23 years straight. I have had it for almost 28 and I'm married and have Never passed my h2 to my husband of almost 25 yrs.

I agree with WilsonAus, this newest partner has a greater change of already having herpes in some form and it is better for you both get tested and compare your results. Good luck, keep us posted. Truly, Aces xx

Thank you Slkxx. I want to talk to someone I trust but I am so afraid if I tell my best friend she will tell her husband, which is understandable. I completely trust her to not judge me but if her husband finds out his best friend is an ex of mine and I just don't want this to get around our group of friends. I have been lucky in the fact that the guy who gave it to me has been there for me but it isn't the same. Confiding in him is just making his own struggle more difficult as he feels terrible for what happened but he did not have any bad intentions. As it turns out finding out led to answering a lot of questions he has had about other health issues he had. So in a weird way this happening may actually help him in the long run with giving him an avenue for treatment. I don't want to pile onto his issues even though he has caused mine because at the end of the day he is a good guy who had no idea what was happening. I'm so glad you were able to talk to your friend and I truly hope the suicidal thoughts become a thing of your past. I am here if you need another ear.

Various reasons are possible, including: genetics, immune system, triggers (e.g. stress), lack of nutrition/exercise, bad luck, etc. No one person has the exact same experience.  Have you tried antivirals?
