Hi! I'm new hear and just had a bad cold sore. I want to start taking Acyclovir but don't really want to take it everyday. Does it need to be taken everyday or can I take it at the first sign of a cold sore? Thank you.

The only real reason to take daily antivirals is if you get frequent/bad cold sores. If not, then taking them at the first sign of an outbreak should be good enough.

Good luck!

Acyclovir is an antiviral and is the generic for Zovirax and is the least expensive, so that is why you see it mentioned most often. There is another antiviral, Valtrex, which is more effective but costs a lot more. There is a generic to Valtrex, Valacyclovir, but it too is more expensive than Acyclovir.

JB I was told if in a relationship one should take daily antivirals to aid in transmission even with condom and underwear.

Terrell;

Antivirals/condoms/underwear does offer the most protection against transmission, but it doesn't mean that if you skip the underwear or condom or antiviral that you will automatically spread it. I know many couples who do none of these and even after decades of marriage they have never passed it to their spouse.

Personally speaking, I have been with about a dozen women since becoming a Herpster and only taking antivirals (their choice not to use condoms) I have never spread it.

Even if you do use all of these, there is no guarantee that you you won't pass it along anyway.

Its all about the amount of risk your partner wants to take.

Good luck!

Thanks give me time line when you start back having unprotected sex with antivirals? I had one outbreak about a year ago none visual sense. But my wife has hsv1, I was told by two doctors my case was cellulitis rather hsv2, but I ordered a swab which grew the virus hsv2. It was on my scrotum. My wife was unprotected sex but I fear transmission. I wouldn't won't her to go through what I did it hurtled like ....

      Hi @WhatDidIDo2023, hopefully all is well with you and your significant other and are still together.   Did she develop any other symptoms after you mentioned her getting itchiness? Was it determined what you had was contagious? Most likely developed a fungal disease and caused her a yeast or uti

      Hi @Luna 01 I really feel it is worthwhile obtaining a proper Herpeselect test given the outcomes of the home panel test. Regardless, your current symptoms are almost certainly not related to herpes. Hopefully, your doctor can assist in resolving these.
