(Almost) Newly Diagnosed - HSV1 & GHSV1?

Hi all,

So after a pretty unsatisfactory romp with a guy, I noticed that I felt pretty irritated/torn down there. :(

Didn't pay much attention to it, however, while brushing my teeth Monday night, I noticed that I had a cold sore on my lip. Which was weird... because I've never gotten cold sores...

Fast forward to Tuesday, when I end up at Walgreens getting blood tested for IGG, and at my gynecologist who said it looked exactly like herpes and swabbed me. :( He wasn't sure that he would be able to type it as the lesions were just starting, not sure he could get enough of virus on the swab.

I'm assuming that it's HSV1, considering I have it both orally and genitally. Also, my IGG results came back negative for both types (HSV1 = 0.17, HSV2 = 0.07). But part of me is worried that it's HSV2, my understanding is that it's pretty hard to get that orally though? And he also spent a lot of time going down on me.

I guess any advice would be good to hear. I'm more irritated by his reaction to it, and how much it sucks to pee. But I'll be all right, I guess.

I got HSV1 both orally and genitally at the same time too. Sounds like your first genital outbreak isn't as bad as it could be either which hopefully means you won't get many. Try not to stress about it cause you'll be just fine. When I told the last person I was dating, he told me he has GHSV1 too. It's so common and becomes a minor inconvenience.

Big hug to you!

Hi there, you have come to the right place. The more you know about this the better you will feel. You will realize that for the most part, herpes is just a very common, mostly harmless virus. 90% of all adults have herpes in one form or another. Anyone who has ever had mono, chicken pox or a cold sore has herpes.

You are correct, hsv2 oral is rare so the chances are, if you do have this, that it is hsv1. Blood tests look for antibodies in your blood that your immune system creates to fight the virus. However it can take up to 16 weeks for your immune system to create them for you to test positive. So you can have this virus and still test negative in a blood test.

Learn all you can about this and you will feel better.

Good luck!

You should retest for antibodies in 6 months... IGg blood test... Maybe your body hasn't made any antibodies yet.... You may just have hsv-1 but you never know... I have hsv 1 and 2... I know I got hsv-1 oral when I was 16...first kiss got a cold sore 2 days later n never had one before.... Dk when I got hsv-2 since I thought I was being tested for it yearly.... Found out about type 2 last December through blood test...

Thank you! Yeah, nothing like what they show in text books, I just have 4 white bumps on the outer part, and then some papercut/lacerations (which is the worst part) near the entrance causing major swelling (but part of that is due to how rough he was... not sure he knew what he was doing at all haha. ) Yeah, and my lip is healing pretty quickly too (went and got lysine and vit c, have completely changed my diet around too) so I'm hoping it's likewise down there! More irritation than anything because it wasn't even a good time, added onto his initial reaction of how he's worried about himself since he know's he's "clean" (after I sent him an innocent text asking if he's ever gotten cold sores). I'm pretty sure he's scared to go get tested too and see the results, likewise, I'm pretty sure I freaked out the nurse at my gyno with my nonchalant attitude about this haha.

Thank you! Yeah, I had a scare about a year ago and became really educated on it, so I'm kind of nonchalant about it at this point lol. That's what I figured, the odd's of me making it through life without getting it were not in my favor. Won't lie, kind of kicking myself for being such a germaphobe kid and always refusing to share my drinks with others when I was younger! Yeah, that's what I figured. I had dated a guy who had HSV1, hence why I went and got the blood test right at the start of this, to see if it was a new infection or previously dormant (especially because the guy I had hooked up with was saying this was my fault and I had more than likely given something to him... cool). He was at work so he couldn't go get tested, figured it would be easier for me to go get tested and see what the results are and go from there). My gyno said it could've been from when I hooked up with someone in beginning of June, but he also did not perform oral on me, and I feel like there's just such a coincidence that I got cold sores in both places after this one. I know that rough sex can be a trigger, but I don't see why it would've also popped up on my mouth then? I guess we shall see when he goes and gets tested this weekend.

It's okay though, I was texting a guy from Tinder today and mentioned I couldn't hang out with him (I had told him I had gotten sick) today. I said that on top of being sick, I now have a cold sore, and he responded with, "yay herpes!!! now youre a complete package of beauty" and some cute emojis and proceeded to tell me how sad he was that I couldn't hang out tonight. So maybe this will be a good way to weed out the jerks! :p

Yeah, I'll do that. This literally happened over the weekend, so I figured I wouldn't have antibodies yet, but wanted to know if it was just previously dormant or if it was more likely from this encounter. It seems that most people think that! Like the guy I was seeing thought that too. Luckily we have this new company partnership with Walgreens where I live where blood tests are really inexpensive and can be patient ordered - think I paid $22 for HSV1 & 2 IGG. Results were ready in like 6 hours and sent to my phone! Do you have any advice about outbreaks?

I also sent the guy to get tested this weekend. He said he also agrees in thinking it's only HSV1 but we shall see!

Chipping in my two cents: On a side note, herpes has taught me that anyone who says they're "clean" is

1) Probably not clean, and

2) Showing their ignorance.

:p

"yay herpes!!! now youre a complete package of beauty"

Someone actually said that? LOL! That's strangely awesome XD I'm really new to the dating game, so this is a very strange...

Also - $22 bucks on a herpes test?!?!?! AT WALLGREENS?!

This place is only in the US, right? What the heck!!! It's like going to Walmart and buying a simple test!

Would you like to know how much the nurses told me I'd have to fork over for a herpes blood test? Anywhere from $90 - $140!! It's ridiculous! I have to get my but across the border...

Yeah, I'm realizing the same! My only concern is that he won't get tested now because he's scared about the results... ugh. That doesn't help anyone out!

YES hahahah! I thought so too! He's an interesting one, probably should've not messed around with my"giver" and instead waited for this champ.

Yes, it's with a new company called Theranos. They just draw your blood, and they send results straight to your smart phone. I think they drew my blood around noon, got results around 5 when I was walking out of another Walgreens with my antivirals. Yeah! It's really convenient - if my homeboy doesn't go ahead and get his done this weekend and my doctor isn't able to type my swab -- I'll just come back in a few months and get my IGG blood work again. And if you were just testing for HSV1 or HSV2, It would only be 9-13$ a test! I forget which one cost 9 and which one cost $13. :)

Also plus side and update to everyone - I did not have to put a wash cloth into my mouth to pee today, and it barely stung! I am pretty over the moon about it. It's the little things :D

... Also I ate half a pizza which I reckoned was okay because I went strictly-high-lysine diet crazy since Tuesday and it was a white pizza with a lot of garlic... also ate dark chocolate... and a bowl of pretzels... oops. :( Don't do too well with limiting myself from tasty foods... but eating lots of lysine capsules as well as lysine-laden foods to make up for my mistakes!

Plus side is I'm sure I'll each much healthier now, and hopefully make better choices regarding boys :)

Update: my "pal" ended up getting tested today - Was positive for HSV-1 so guess what clears everything up! Was bound to get it eventually someday, just sucks that I got it while I'm supposed to be studying for the GRE, but also better to get it while I'm at home with mom than on my own. :-) at least now I don't have to worry about getting it anymore!

I really suggest that the best thing is for both you and your boyfriend to obtain the Westernblot HSV test. He has a 50%+ chance of being positive and you have a 50%+ chance of being negative. Only the Westernblot can sort this out for you.

Hi @kpn the first thing to note is that it is all OK to have HSV-1 or indeed any HSV type. It is not negligence, it is just being human. Oral HSV-1 is not an STD in the sense that the primary transmission is non sexual and the majority of it occurs between parents to children. If any of your children contracted HSV, you would know it. It wouldn't be a silent infection for children. HSV-2 tends not to shed from the oral region for people who have it there in any event. At age 73, about 80% of the population has HSV-1. There is no reason to believe that your mother isn't one of those people. About half of all carriers of oral HSV-1 do not realise they have it and have no living memory of cold sores as they were infected when very young. The most logical explanation is that your mother has oral HSV-1 from her childhood and that your daughter doesn't have oral HSV. Not that it is relevant to anyone but yourself, but your wife might find she actually has genital HSV-1 having had an untyped swab when she was diagnosed.

Hi @Dylan86 and welcome to the website. First note that you cannot pragmatically become infected with HSV-1 from sharing a drink. If you carry HSV-1, it did not come from that episode. As such it is extremely unlikely HSV-1 is the primary cause of your issues. Can the WB miss a HSV-1 infection? Rarely but its feasible in less than 1% of carriers who test with WB. Note that the WB does not have values, it has positive or negative as you say. It is way more accurate than IgG as it looks for all 30+ antibodies that are in your blood for HSV. Could you have HSV-1? Yes it is feasible, but it would be a very old childhood infection. Could HSV-1 be causing your oral issues? No herpes will not cause the burning mouth syndrome you describe. Could some of the lesions be herpes related? It is feasible if you are a carrier. But it is unlikely to be the primary cause of the issues, but its an opportunistic virus that can cause issues when something else is taxing your immune system. The best thing you can do is the PCR test on a oral lesion and that will be pretty definitive. Either way, in summary. I'd suggest there is <1% chance you are part of about 70% of the population that has HSV-1. Further there is less than a 1% chance that herpes is the primary cause of your issues.

My wife has had hsv 2 for around 8 years. We have two young children 3 years old and 18 months old. My wife only had one outbreak when she was first infected so we didn't worry too much about passing it on to our children. I understand the risk to be pretty low under those circumstances. I don't believe my wife took antivirals during either pregnancy. My younger child has diaper rashes pretty often and has had what I thought was hand foot and mouth disease. That was going around the daycare a while back. I haven't really given it much concern though.  About a week ago, my mother kissed my youngest on the lips. My kid was congested at the time but they pretty much always are. About 3 days later, my mother developed a cold sore on her mouth. She has never had cold sores in her life and she is 73 and happily married so she is not going around messing with anyone. She pointed to the fact she had kissed my youngest and presumed that is where she was infected. At first I said that's not possible since my child has never had any cold sores but since then I have really started to consider that maybe it is possible she contracted it from my daughter. This has me worried that my daughter does indeed have hsv2 and was shedding in her mouth. Does anyone have any experience with this? I am really losing sleep about this. Two people I care so much about got hsv from my negligence. I am fine if I were to contract it, I am not worried about what others think at this point in my life. I just don't want anyone else to have it.

Hello DavidGua.... based on the two pictures, I'm not seeing anything that resembles a typical herpes outbreak.  I am not sure what those spots are on your penis.  Please have a doctor take a look and I'm sure you'll get a proper diagnosis.  Have you ever received an HSV antibody test (IgG)?  Again, I doubt your symptoms are herpes-related but, if you'd like some peace of mind, you could request the IgG antibody test for HSV2.   Best of luck.... let us know if you have any other questions/concerns.
