It's back after 5 years

It has been 5 great years that I have been outbreak free. I was diagnosed with HSV-1 genital and it was pretty horrible. Well this week I got a cold sore for the first time! When I think about it, I can see how I got an outbreak now, but didn't think it would be on my face. I have stopped birth control a month ago...so my hormones are probably waky, it sprung up on the first day of my period, and the day before I had a volleyball tournament and my face got a lot of sun! I was completely shocked and thought this was impossible. I was under the impression that having type 1 in one place meant that it couldn't appear in the other place. Any ideas of what is going on with my body? I don't feel feverish or sick like I did when I had my initial outbreak with ghsv1, but I do have some swollen lymph nodes. Can anyone help me out and give me some insight? tia

Hi there, sorry I missed you in chat.

Perhaps you got it oral at the same time you got it genital and just never had an outbreak on your face. You didn't have any antibodies to fight this off prior to getting it, so you could get it in both places at the same time.

Once you get it in one place and your body builds up antibodies to help prevent you from getting it in the other place but it can happen that way as well. Unfortunately you may never now just when you got it oral.

Good luck!

My BF has it orally does that mean he has a harder time getting it genitally from me ?

Yes, if he has this virus he has antibodies which will make it about 30% more difficult for him to get it genitally from you.

Thanks JB, on that note, what can I do to take care of this? I bought abreva and polysporin patches....I am having a much harder time with this than genitals because it's right out for everyone to see and know about. I wish I could have kept this from my family but I can't hide from them anymore, it's my birthday in 2 days :/

Have you tried taking L-Lysine 1,000mg? You can take up to 4 times a day while having an outbreak. This usually works for me and I use Carmax Coldsore Cream. I heard Abreva doesn't really work on most people. But Carmax Coldsore Cream was a game changer for me. It got rid of the sore in less than 2 days. With no visible scabs.

When I first got HSV1 , my "lover" neglected to tell me he had "cold sores". To be fair, a lot of people don't realize that HSV1 can be transmitted from lips to genitals and vice-versa, and those of us who have it on our genitals can spread it to others' genitals as well. Many people who spread it don't even know they have it, since initial outbreaks may not be noticed or blamed on something else. For most people, there is a flare-up and, whew, it is no fun.

Each person can have different triggers despite having the same ailment. Stress can flare up HSV1 for some yet not others. Some are affected by asthma or arthritis medications, yet others are not. Some foods cause flare-ups for some yet not for others. Sun exposure does cause physical stress, so that could be a trigger.

The first outbreak is always the worst, with subsequent outbreaks being fewer and less painful. Just be careful about the immune system, as HIV/AIDS or medications that hamper the immune system will increase flare-up risks. Having HSV and then doing risky behavior with untrusted or untrustworthy people will only make life much harder in the future as we wage.

As was said, certain diets and L-Lysine pills can be inexpensive to add in, which reminds me I need to get some more.

Hi @WhatDidIDo2023, hopefully all is well with you and your significant other and are still together.   Did she develop any other symptoms after you mentioned her getting itchiness? Was it determined what you had was contagious? Most likely developed a fungal disease and caused her a yeast or uti

Hi @Luna 01 I really feel it is worthwhile obtaining a proper Herpeselect test given the outcomes of the home panel test. Regardless, your current symptoms are almost certainly not related to herpes. Hopefully, your doctor can assist in resolving these.
