I need the skinny on what to expect, what I should and shouldn't eat etc.

Newly Diagnosed 1

Recommended Posts

I recently found out I have HsV 2. I had some blood work and it came back positive. I am in a relationship (gay), but We both cheated during a break-up. He has tested negative. I was on Humira for RA and it lowers your immunity. They feel this is how I contracted the Virus. My partner of 4 1/2 years is completely free. We are seeing a counselor to work though the issues and have been having sex with condoms. I even wear one while he is performing oral sex. My questions are these; What do I eat and what do I avoid. How much is too much lysine supplements and which brand should I use? What are the chances of never having a break out? How do I know if I have oral or genital? ( I saw something about this on a previous post) When do "Normal" folks have their fisrt outbreak? How do I know it is an outbreak? My doctor has been very vague regarding this info...I don't thing she knows. Every time I get an itch like from sweating after cycling or running I freak out. What are antivirals? I saw this on a previous post. What foods are strictly off base and which foods are OK in moderation? I love seafood, nuts, and garlic etc...several sites say NO. Help me, please!

I haven't had an outbreak. I have had cold sores since I was a child, but this blood work was the first time I tested positive. No lesions or the such in my boxer region. They drew blood three times and I am going to discuss the third results Thursday at my rheumatologists. I went off Humira to get more actual results because the first test showed Hepatitis B the second and third have all come back with only HsV 2. They have all agreed the Humira could cause false positive for Hep B. What do I ask them on Thursday? So overwhelmed.

I don't know. I haven't been given a hard copy, but will get one on Thursday. What are you wondering so I will know the right questions. The nurse, she and I are friends, called me and said I still tested positive for hsv2 not HsV 1. She sent me a text with a pic of the lab results shown on a computer screen, but it was not legible when blown up. What do I need to ask?

I do live or try to live a healthy lifestyle, but I have read articles about not eating nuys, specifically, almonds, and various other nuts high in arginine. Also, it mentioned seafood and geltatin as having high arginine levels compared to lysine levels. Tobacco products, caffeine and citrus drinks. Do any of y'all avoid these?

Can anyone in this group answer the questions I have asked above regarding food choices and any other info that may be helpful. All I know is that three blood test have all come back positive for HsV 2 and when I ask(over the phone) was informed the level was higher than normal. I will get a hard copy of results tomorrow.

Not everyone is affected by the foods they eat.  I can eat anything I want and never have an outbreak while some people just look at a peanut and get one :(

Here is a link to an article that shows the levels of arginine/lysine in common foods.  It is advised to stay away from foods rich in arginine:

Good luck!

Suggested valtrex daily, but waiting on ID doc appt. I have been taking lysine, bee pollen pellets, coconut oil, tumeric extract and acv.

Unfortunately a blood test cannot tell you where you have the virus, only what type you have.  Were you not tested for hsv1?  Or did they just assume you had it since you have been getting cold sores since you were a child?  Having hsv2 oral is rare so I would expect that you have that genital.  If you have never had a genital outbreak by now you probably never will.  Most people who have hsv don't have outbreaks.

Taking daily antivirals won't have an effect on you since you have never had an outbreak.  However, if your partner tested negative taking them daily can help prevent transmission to them.

Good luck!

Thanks JBnATL, the third test didn't check for HsV 1, However, after reading your post I looked back on first and second and they do in fact list HSV1 and shoe it positive. They have never(both doctors) mentioned me being positive for HsV 1. That's strange. Regarding the outbreaks should I have had one by now? What I mean is that I was exposed in July and have yet to have an outbreak. Taking lysine daily, BTW, how much lysine is safe? If I eat something that is high in arginine I take any where from 2-4 500 mg lysine. Is there a safe amount? Also, I am unsure if gential or oral because the transgression was a Blow Job. I was on Humira at the time for Rheumatoid Arthritis and it lowers your immunity. They feel certain that is was the "deciding factor" considering my partner has tested negative and sex before we found out had occurred often. One last question; I read in a previous post you had made to someone else that herpes was not in seman, it that true? If so, why did they(my pcp) tell me that in order for me to receive A BJ I had to wear a condom. That really does change the whole oral situation. Thanks for your input.

What the hellhell is the above thread about??????

Most people who have herpes don't have outbreaks, so you aren't alone.  Those who do get their primary outbreak do so 2 - 20 days after they were exposed, so if you are past that point then you probably never will have an outbreak.

This website recommends taking 1250mg of lysine a day and doubling that if you do have an outbreak.  It also cautions never to take more than 3000 mg in one day.

http://www.herpes-coldsores.com/amino-acid-lysine-for-herpes.htm

And I may have been mistaken in my comments about the virus not being in semen.  Another posted a link to an article where it was shown that a woman contracted the virus after being artificially inseminated.  You don't have to wear a condom while receiving a BJ but it does reduce the risk of transmission.  As long as the giver of the BJ is aware of the risks let them decide if you use condoms.

Good luck!

I really suggest that the best thing is for both you and your boyfriend to obtain the Westernblot HSV test. He has a 50%+ chance of being positive and you have a 50%+ chance of being negative. Only the Westernblot can sort this out for you.

Hi @kpn the first thing to note is that it is all OK to have HSV-1 or indeed any HSV type. It is not negligence, it is just being human. Oral HSV-1 is not an STD in the sense that the primary transmission is non sexual and the majority of it occurs between parents to children. If any of your children contracted HSV, you would know it. It wouldn't be a silent infection for children. HSV-2 tends not to shed from the oral region for people who have it there in any event. At age 73, about 80% of the population has HSV-1. There is no reason to believe that your mother isn't one of those people. About half of all carriers of oral HSV-1 do not realise they have it and have no living memory of cold sores as they were infected when very young. The most logical explanation is that your mother has oral HSV-1 from her childhood and that your daughter doesn't have oral HSV. Not that it is relevant to anyone but yourself, but your wife might find she actually has genital HSV-1 having had an untyped swab when she was diagnosed.

Hi @Dylan86 and welcome to the website. First note that you cannot pragmatically become infected with HSV-1 from sharing a drink. If you carry HSV-1, it did not come from that episode. As such it is extremely unlikely HSV-1 is the primary cause of your issues. Can the WB miss a HSV-1 infection? Rarely but its feasible in less than 1% of carriers who test with WB. Note that the WB does not have values, it has positive or negative as you say. It is way more accurate than IgG as it looks for all 30+ antibodies that are in your blood for HSV. Could you have HSV-1? Yes it is feasible, but it would be a very old childhood infection. Could HSV-1 be causing your oral issues? No herpes will not cause the burning mouth syndrome you describe. Could some of the lesions be herpes related? It is feasible if you are a carrier. But it is unlikely to be the primary cause of the issues, but its an opportunistic virus that can cause issues when something else is taxing your immune system. The best thing you can do is the PCR test on a oral lesion and that will be pretty definitive. Either way, in summary. I'd suggest there is <1% chance you are part of about 70% of the population that has HSV-1. Further there is less than a 1% chance that herpes is the primary cause of your issues.

My wife has had hsv 2 for around 8 years. We have two young children 3 years old and 18 months old. My wife only had one outbreak when she was first infected so we didn't worry too much about passing it on to our children. I understand the risk to be pretty low under those circumstances. I don't believe my wife took antivirals during either pregnancy. My younger child has diaper rashes pretty often and has had what I thought was hand foot and mouth disease. That was going around the daycare a while back. I haven't really given it much concern though.  About a week ago, my mother kissed my youngest on the lips. My kid was congested at the time but they pretty much always are. About 3 days later, my mother developed a cold sore on her mouth. She has never had cold sores in her life and she is 73 and happily married so she is not going around messing with anyone. She pointed to the fact she had kissed my youngest and presumed that is where she was infected. At first I said that's not possible since my child has never had any cold sores but since then I have really started to consider that maybe it is possible she contracted it from my daughter. This has me worried that my daughter does indeed have hsv2 and was shedding in her mouth. Does anyone have any experience with this? I am really losing sleep about this. Two people I care so much about got hsv from my negligence. I am fine if I were to contract it, I am not worried about what others think at this point in my life. I just don't want anyone else to have it.

Hello DavidGua.... based on the two pictures, I'm not seeing anything that resembles a typical herpes outbreak.  I am not sure what those spots are on your penis.  Please have a doctor take a look and I'm sure you'll get a proper diagnosis.  Have you ever received an HSV antibody test (IgG)?  Again, I doubt your symptoms are herpes-related but, if you'd like some peace of mind, you could request the IgG antibody test for HSV2.   Best of luck.... let us know if you have any other questions/concerns.
