Antivirals and Prodrome/Post Herpetic Neuralgia

Hey All,

Not sure about you guys, but I can't tell the difference between Prodrome, and Post Herpetic Neuralgia. I do also wonder if Antiviral medication can cause the same Prodrome/Neuralgia symptoms. Any thoughts on this?

My inner thighs are sensitive to the point of pain, though the intensity varies, my scrotum and shaft are sensitive... yet I'm not experiencing an OB. I'm STILL at the tail end of my initial OB, where I had painful urination, and inflammation at the tip of my urethra. Painful urination is gone, but the visual discolouration (reddish hue) remains at the tip... It's like I can FEEL the virus fighting to break out, but the antivirals are keeping it at bay.

The Prdrome/Neuralgia symptoms only began for me once I began antivirals, and I think now I've been taking antivirals for over two weeks. I'm afraid that if I stop antivirals, I may have an OB. The Prodrome/Neuralgia is wearing me down man, I just want this shit to pass.

Does anyone have insight as to how to differentiate between Prodrome and Post-Neuralgia (are we highly infectious during the Neuralgia as we are during Prodrome?) and what the absolute fuck can I do to chill this tingling out?

Hey Bro,

I feel your pain, I really do.

For me, the "tingling" and "itching" is a daily occurance, which ive had for around 6-12 months now, and you cant say that I've had a 1 year long outbreak, this is why alot of what is said in the field of Herpes is bullshit, like you can have plenty of tingling and itching but no outbreak, then have an outbreak but have no itching or tingling. Either way i still take antivirals, but do they work? Im not even sure anymore.

The only time my itching and tingling fully went away was when I did a load of Cannabis in Amsterdam, for a week afterwards it had disappeared :)

Post Herpetic Neuralgia is meant to go away in time, but i have no fucking clue how to fix it... I mean its your nerves, you could try supplements but man, its annoying me too dude.

Thanks for your response Lexyz It is also hard because the prodrome/neuralgia are supposed to be an indicator of viral shedding also. Living a life as 'normal' as my pre-HSV2 life is that bit harder if I can't even make an informed decision on whether I might be shedding or not. I was thinking of making some Cannabis oil and treating myself with that too. I am fully aware that it can't possibly hurt me hehe ;)

I think I'll keep some of that antiviral lube on hand too just incase....

This comes at a shit time (could there ever be a good time?). I'm only 30, at my physical, cognitive, and career peak (or doing well anyway), and now this sort of cuts me down.

Now I'm just venting. My nipples are tender today, I wonder if that's related.

St. John's Wort and nervine herbs, in general, target, nourish and regenerate nerves...  SJW is just all complete.

I would get these cuts on my face.  They'd subside for a day and then come back.   Wasn't until I took SJW, they healed, I felt my face was stronger.  and I could feel the "warmth" retreating back from the distal parts of the nerve to its root/source (which was cool and depressing at the same time!).

SJW was/is the only thing that helped me get on top of my hsv outbreaks.   HSV is like a war of attrition.   One needs to get parasympathetic/relax and heal in order to keep it subsided.  But HSV keeps going.  It wears out the nerves.  Any little vulnerability in a nerve is like a frayed wire that generates more heat and is susceptible to more damage.  Then we talk about post-herpetic neuralgia.  Enter SJW, cools everything down, is antiviral to HSV (all viruses with lipid envelopes) and SJW helps regenerate and balance the nerves/nervous system.  So before you go back to battle, take some SJW so you may have some time to heal, regenerate and gather yourself once again.

Hi...just be careful taking SAW if you are on antidepressants or anti anxiety meds as they can counteract.   As for cooling down,  polypsporin  cooling gel has worked for me...and you could even refrigerate slightly for more effect.

Lastly, where can I get antiviral lube?  What is it called?  Thanks

Someone was posting here about it. I think it's called vivagel. I read about it on here, and that it's been approved for sale in Australia. It's a condom with antiviral lube, and I think also an antiviral lube product separate from the condoms.

I've been taking St Johns Wort for two days and haven't noticed anything change.. but I'm still recovering anyway and can't seem to find any answers on why I'm recovering so slowly.

I noticed what looks like a 'cut' on my abdomen today. Definitely HSV2 related. Fuck this virus :P

My recovery is very slow as well.  I was still having lots of symptoms at 5 weeks in from my initial outbreak.  My general health is quite poor as I am an uncontrolled diabetic, have a low immune system due to meningitis when I was younger as well as a host of other stuff.   If you have alot of stress and other markers that cause outbreaks like me...this may cause it to heal more slowly.

The SJW will take about 3 weeks to begin working internally.  Tea tree oil on the cut will help. ..may burn a bit because it is an antiseptic, but it should stop it into blistering if it is headed that way.

As for the condoms with antiviral...checked onto it, they are avail., but lube is still in the trial stages and not yet avail.

Best of luck.

It's been so long now that I can't remember, but there was a time when I would have sworn that Valtrex was the start/cause of my constant prodrome...it's like it flipped a switch that can't be turned off. Thats all it did, none of the antivirals have ever helped me in any way. I believe there can be a correlation between PHN and antivirals.

Always so interesting to hear each persons experience. It's a shame that we're all so different. If only everything could be more simple. I seem to keep getting slightly better in one way, and then slightly worse in another way. I am hoping it will all level out once my immune system catches up and I'll end up like some of the lucky few- minimal to no outbreaks.

One can dream.

Has anybody ever had a sore IN their nose, but also have a white headed pimple on the surface? I woke up with a sore inside my nose and then saw a pimple when I went to the mirror. Sure it could just be a pimple, but everything now kinda feels like cause for alarm. Heh. #herplyf

Do you have hsv orally?

When I'm getting run down, I'll either get tender or a white head at the crease of my nose.    Usually I'll get whiteheads on my philtrum.  And then I'll feel some stingy sensations at my chin where the foremen holes are(for the respective nerve)

CD for 4 mos. I've had constant irritation, tingling, lymph node swelling an px in L armpit, posterior R thigh px/fullness, pubic fullness, anal itching with occasional micro tear after going to the bathroom.  My symptoms are worse with coffee, hot water/showering/bathing, erections (masturbation), or just friction from my pants/underwear while moving around at work.

I'm one of the ones testing negative still however after two initial equivocals (first one ran twice) then negatives since I think I am one who seroreverted.     No blisters but constant herpetic type neuropathy.

To Constant Diplomat

I have had HSV 2 for 25 yrs. I'm female and have had HPN off and on with few OBs. I was taking Valtrax sporadically as needed (which can make one resistant to the meds) but started Valtrax once daily  12 days ago and my legs feel much better. I had felt that I was locked into a prodome also.  But doesn't it make sense that if you have nerve damage that someof it will be residual and always be there even if the virus is inactive?  You should try to see as many good MD's as you can, Infectious Disease guys at the top of there game. Maybe it's better to have an OB and start fresh?!

My experience (diagnosed in January of this year) with antivirals is that when I start feeling the prodromal itchiness/tingling/slight pain (it's never extremely painful for me now) I will take two tablets of famciclovir and generally this will keep it at bay. Since my first OB I've not had it severely - just a few blisters at the one time, even when I didn'take the antivirals. I do think every tingle is the start of an OB and I wonder if immune system sucked then would the OBs be worse? I am quite fit and was pretty into nutrition even before being blessed with HSV. I was taking Lysine but in the end I felt like it was causing constant prodromal symptoms and since I've stopped taking it they have decreased. Don't know what that's about. I also notice that when something highly stressful happens to me AND I'm working night shift that it will cause an OB. What I considered to be post-herpatic neuralgia was only in the weeks following my primary OB - I had delayed urination because of ?nerve damage or swelling I think. Haven't experienced this severity of OB and therefore no more of that.

OKAY!!! I've found a cure for this horrid PHN. And I can drink a cup of coffee with milk each day . Take one Valtrax daily. Drink or take in milk which is double lysine or arginine. I'm taking it in PUDDING which is delicious....butterscotch,, vanilla, tapioca. So easy to make. Get lactaid 5 mg cholesterol no fat milk . For each portion you get 1/2 cup milk (4 to a box). Eat pudding or fish for breakfast herring, nova scotia....expensive but works. LOAD UP YOUR BODY WITH LYSINE in food. Dont take a lot of lysine capusles. Someone taking 3000 mg day for 5 years ruined her kidneys and you know what that means.      Icecream too.

I too got caught up in long lasting prodromes.  HORRIBLE.  Stop coffee til get balanced with enough lysine in your body. Then add slowly.  LYSINE is the answer and one valtrax daily. Good luck.   I also take 2000 mg lysine capsuels., but want to stop.

How do I post pic on hear
    • WilsoInAus
Hey @JS.245 and welcome to the website. The pictures aren’t that suggestive of herpes. Hard to tell from the pics what’s going on, but that could be a number of things. Are the larger bump bubble things persistent? What you have in the pics is hence independent of your herpes status.  The test results are inclusive - most people test over 5 if they are infected.  Do you have a history of oral cold sores?

Hey, just got a STD test a while ago after noticing these showing up at the base of my penis, but its been about 5 months since I was with someone and now these are showing up. It doesn't hurt nor do I have any other symptom that I know of. I'm trying to see what's up before I go to the doctors because I don't have insurance and I'm very anxious about the situation. the std test was expensive as is.

Just another set of supporting articles to a potential release date in 2024 giving hope to sufferers whom the standard of care is currently worthless: Promising Progress in clinical trials for Pritelivir (herpescureadvocacy.com) HSV Treatment Readies for Approval — Precision Vaccinations News

I have not found a cheaper source for Amenalief, and I've searched high and low. I have a thread called "Pritelivir at Last" you may want to follow as I have a strong belief that It may be available to the public in the summer of 2024 and as I find new info, I update the thread immediately. Now, may I suggest a combination of drugs that several others on this forum have found to be very effective over acyclovir alone? Myself and others have found that taking 40mg of omeprazole (Tagamet @dissolvedo2 ) with 1 gram of Valacyclovir in the morning and 1 gram of Valacyclovir in the evening alone for 3 days have had profound effectiveness at stopping outbreaks in their tracks. I'd like to remind you that I am not a doctor and at best I am personal researcher for what works for me. I @lw@ys share my findings with the forum in the hopes to help others alleviate their suffering. There is another drug combo that I have tried myself as well as others on this forum have tried and that I personally feel is a much more effective for myself. This combo is 1 gram of activated charcoal with 1-gram of valacyclovir in the morning followed by 1 gram of valacyclovir in the evening alone, again for 3 days. I have found that this has reduced my outbreaks to almost only once a year and they are mild at worse. Again, just a reminder that this works for me and may not work for you but I always feel that i have to share this with anyone that cannot get this virus under control so I hope my findings can help those of you who cannot achieve relief with the standard treatment alone. The stronger anti-virals come with risks and if I can help anyone avoid those risks then by all means I feel I have done some good in this world. I only ask that you let me know if either of these suggestions work for you so that I can document it in my notes. Good luck my friend!
