Diagnosed in 2013

I was diagnosed with genital herpes in 2013... I was and still am DEVASTATED. I've only told maybe a handful of people and for the LONGEST time only my mom knew. The first outbreak was the worst experience of my life. I never in my life have ever felt so bad physically and mentally.. I KNEW something was wrong the minute I finished having sex with the man that gave it too me.... I couldn't pee no matter how hard I tried && my vagina was just SO swollen. i didn't think anything of it at first because that was the first time i had sex in about a year and a half. .. the next day, i KNEW 100 that i had contracted something.  I haven't had sexual intercourse with ANYBODY since the day I was diagnosed with it, by going to the hospital...... 2 years later I still have outbreaks, i feel like i constantly live with a outbreak going on... it almost NEVER subsides all the way. It's so frustrating and depressing.... I was tolD BY the ER doctor that I had herpes, he knew just by looking. I was also tested but never did recieve the results from it...... Should I go get retested... is there any other way besides a swab.. is it too late to get a blood test? I need relief... so bad. I cant even live my life fully because of it... Help someone, please. I need advice.

You absolutely need a blood antibody test type specific for IgG HSV-1 and IgG HSV-2. This will tell you the type you have. The ongoing outbreaks do not sound good. With a diagnosis you will be able to get antivirals to help for a while; and they will help a lot!

Do you get oral cold sores?

NO - I don't get oral cold sores.  I have Acyclovir actually tho i'm not even sure how many times a day i'm supposed to take it anymore

If antivirals do not help then the finger of supicion points to some other factors that needs addressing too.

Take the antiviral as directed. A once daily 800mg dose should be plenty.

I at one point also had Bacterial Vaginosis ... I just hope and pray one day I will have no outbreaks.. even if just for a few months.

There are too many people coming on this website saying "the doctor could tell just by looking".

A note of advice for you all - DOCTORS CANNOT TELL HERPES JUST BY LOOKING. If they say that, demand a test. There are many different infections (especially when it comes to STDs!) that look like one thing, but can be something else.

Besides, you owe it to yourself to get a definite answer.

Rachel011, I'm sorry that this has been rough on you :( My advice is to get tested to make sure that what you have is actually herpes. Next, if you are positive for herpes, ask for antivirals. It should help lessen the outbreaks.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi Rachel011

if you get outbreak regularly, maybe go to your doctor and get a swab from the lesion. I think you will get a result from it.  If you already have it over 12 weeks, blood test should also tell you if it is herpes. When I went to doctor first time when I had a few lesions. She said it did not look like herpes but I insisted her to swab it anyway. It was like a little pimple and she had to scratch it with a needle to be able to take a sample. It came back positive so maybe try this when you have outbreak.

Hi and welcome.  I would just like to say that I have a positive swab and a negative 6 months plus post exposure blood igg test.  Nada.  Says negative.  But I'm not.  Not everyone converts which is why the blood test is not in a standard std panel... It sucks basically.  I would seek your medical records from that visit when you were swabbed.  But I do agree Drs can't tell by looking with 100% accuracy.  Also, I had bv as well with my Dx.  Seem to be friends,  bv and hsv.

Just another set of supporting articles to a potential release date in 2024 giving hope to sufferers whom the standard of care is currently worthless: Promising Progress in clinical trials for Pritelivir (herpescureadvocacy.com) HSV Treatment Readies for Approval — Precision Vaccinations News

I have not found a cheaper source for Amenalief, and I've searched high and low. I have a thread called "Pritelivir at Last" you may want to follow as I have a strong belief that It may be available to the public in the summer of 2024 and as I find new info, I update the thread immediately. Now, may I suggest a combination of drugs that several others on this forum have found to be very effective over acyclovir alone? Myself and others have found that taking 40mg of omeprazole (Tagamet @dissolvedo2 ) with 1 gram of Valacyclovir in the morning and 1 gram of Valacyclovir in the evening alone for 3 days have had profound effectiveness at stopping outbreaks in their tracks. I'd like to remind you that I am not a doctor and at best I am personal researcher for what works for me. I @lw@ys share my findings with the forum in the hopes to help others alleviate their suffering. There is another drug combo that I have tried myself as well as others on this forum have tried and that I personally feel is a much more effective for myself. This combo is 1 gram of activated charcoal with 1-gram of valacyclovir in the morning followed by 1 gram of valacyclovir in the evening alone, again for 3 days. I have found that this has reduced my outbreaks to almost only once a year and they are mild at worse. Again, just a reminder that this works for me and may not work for you but I always feel that i have to share this with anyone that cannot get this virus under control so I hope my findings can help those of you who cannot achieve relief with the standard treatment alone. The stronger anti-virals come with risks and if I can help anyone avoid those risks then by all means I feel I have done some good in this world. I only ask that you let me know if either of these suggestions work for you so that I can document it in my notes. Good luck my friend!

Hi @WhatDidIDo2023, hopefully all is well with you and your significant other and are still together.   Did she develop any other symptoms after you mentioned her getting itchiness? Was it determined what you had was contagious? Most likely developed a fungal disease and caused her a yeast or uti
