Newly Diagnosed

Newly diagnosed and I'm in shock and anger!!

Positive for HSV1.  (Over index of 1.1)   (NO Hsv2)

My index:  8.25.   Is this bad? what is Average??   Does this Index number fluctuate ?

There are no cold sores, sores or rash.   Symptoms were terrible mouth odor and white tongue. Using a lot of toothpaste and mouthwash !)  Mouth odor reminded me of oral sex with exboyfriend. (Good reason to believe he was with other women before we broke up.)    He was only sex partner I  had in a 10-year period. And I have not had sex with anyone since our breakup 5 months ago.  I contacted him and suggested he get tested.

The nurse said herpes1 is "very common."  There is no cure.  Contacted via oral sex.  I left question for doctor for treatment. Nurse relayed message "Mouthwash."  I asked if that was it and she said yes. I want to know.... Is there anything I can take to decrease chances of worsening?  Antiviral meds?    Special supplements?

Will this mouth odor eventually subside? (It's terrible!!)

I feel like my life is over!  I"m a young looking 65 year old and look 50, as many people tell me.  Now I really feel like I'm going to be alone for the rest of my life!

Do some people have HSV1 worse than others?

I hear there is no cure.  I just don't want to think negative.  I believe this is going to disappear!!!

Should I re-test every so often?  If so, how often?

I am greatful for any help I can get!  Thank you.

I think we can really help you out here.

First thing you need to come to an appreciation of is that most likely you have had oral HSV-1 since your childhood like well over 50% of the population.

Your mouth odour and white tongue is not related to herpes. You have another dental/oral condition.

Without vaginal lesions, you have not contracted genital HSV-1 from oral sex; as mentioned you have had this most of your life.

Your life is not over, just like it isn't for over 70% of the population (more at age 65). It will not disappear, nor will it cause you any issues. There is no need to retest, your blood will always carry IgG antibodies for HSV-1.

There is no reason to suspect your previous partner cheated as a result of this.

Thank you for taking the time to reply.  I'm very greatful.

"Something" didn't seem right since I have not had any cold sores.  I was at dentist about a month ago.  No problem there.

Can I still have sex without giving HSV1 to my partner?  In view what you have written, should i still tell a potential partner about this?

I tested negative for HSV2.  However, I have had extreme vaginal odor (again the odor smells like my ex-boyf.)  and periodic vaginal burning and itching.  I was tested for UTI.  Negative.   Tested for all other STDs. Negative.

I trust what you have written.  At the same time, I will continue, to sort through data til I have complete peace of mind.

Once again, I am Very, Very Greatful for your time and information.  It's almost 2 am here.  I think now I can sleep more peacefully.  Thank you!

Herpes does not cause an odour. This will definitely be bacterial or fungal.

At this time, all you can really assume is that you have an oral HSV-1 infection. Thus contact with your mouth is the only way you can spread the virus. You can only spread it to people who do not have an infection already, which is pretty few and far between.

Around half of people with HSV-1 do not experience outbreaks. They were most likely infected before age 3 and have no living memory of outbreaks that they probably experienced from infection for a little while.

It is possible that you had/have bacterial vaginosis or thrush and passed that onto your ex boyfriend during intercourse, hence the smell on his penis. Or it may have been the other way around. Check yourself out for thrush/bacterial vaginosis and get some treatment

I am very greatful for your continued help and information.

I guess at this point my main question is this.  Given what you wrote about HSV1 and the commonality of this virus, will I still need to inform a potential sex partner of this virus??   (I guess at 65 I can abstain and re-claim my virginity and thus avoid any embarrassment!)

So, at this point I'll be doing whatever it takes to alleviate any discomforts.  Maintain a healthy immune system, etc.

I spoke with ex-boyfriend and said he'll be tested.  He did say he has crotch irritation/occasional rash, which he developed when deployed in the Vietnam War.  He didn't inform me of this 'til now.  My hunch is that bacteria has been transferred to me, and I plan to take care of it.

Also, I did receive info that mouth odor and white tongue are indicative of oral herpes.  Looks like some differences in data.

Again, I can't thank you enough for your diligence in providing all this info.  Believe me, I have a lot more peace and hope since I received test results.

Sincere thanks.

As far as telling a potential sex partner; I understand you were not given the information you needed to make your own choices because it seems the person who gave it to you was not aware, as most of the population. That is real life, no blame, just lack of awareness and education. That is what this site helps with, compassion because we are all in the same place with different experiences, education to help ourselves and protect others. Simple questions, Would you like to know what your risks are when you meet someone? Would you like all the relative information for you to make your own life choices? Would you feel good about yourself knowingly passing this on to another without informing them of their risk?

As far as diet check out the Lysine to Arginine ratio for herpes and you will see what are triggers to avoid and what supports. If you chose a high Arginine food supplement with L-Lysine tablets available from most vitamin suppliers. I have a friend with HSV1 who swears the Lysine supplement alone has changed his life for the better. Supports collagen too so bonus for us mature ladies!!!

You see herpes manifests itself differently in each one of us as we are unique. Some more than others but that is another topic! You are now on a journey of self help and healing and you will be amazed at what you will learn along the way that will apply to other aspects of you and your life. The sooner you go after this virus upon contact the more chance of killing it in its tracks before it sets up house in you.

A direct approach, Research the option of rinsing your mouth with water and Hydrogen Peroxide. That is Oxygen, Nothing can live in pure oxygen INCLUDING US so do your homework as it can be dangerous using the food grade at 35% but you could use the over the counter 3%.  DO NOT SWALLOW only rinse your mouth for 2 minutes then spit out and rinse well. Does not taste pleasant but you can see the bubbles doing their work and leaves a clean feeling. Great for bad breath too! Knowledge is our strongest ally and there is a wealth of experience here and wonderful people sharing openly to take the fear and stigma away. Better to be proactive than inactive when not sure.

SureWhyNot....Thank you so much for your time, knowledge, care, and diligence in sending this information to me. I am very, very grateful.

Yes, I agree with you.  I also would like to know if a partner had an affliction like this. I could never keep this information from an intimate partner.  I have a conscience!  At this point, however, I plan to remain celibate for the rest of my life. I never thought this would happen to me.

At the same time, I should not be so hard on myself. It's like someone said, I could very well have had this  HSV1 for a long time, and could have received it by  another means.  My health has been fragile.  I have had  fibromyalgia and arthritis for many years. I was very ill with re-occurring bouts of flus, (bedridden for months at a time!) bronchitis, candida, etc.  Was on quite a regimen of meds, but I've improved substantially in those areas.

I'm fortunate it's not something worse!

I am thankful for guidance in handling this mouth odor!  It is starting to subside.  I purchased Biotene products. Have used before, and they work.

Today, I purchased Olive Leaf Liquid Extract, Elderberry liquid, licorice mint tea, turmeric, calcium/D, etc.   I'm cutting back on sugar, flours, etc. Doing  gentle exercises and deep breathing.  I believe that soon there will be a cure for all of this!!  It already exists.  We just need to find it.

Do you know if taking an antiviral would be helpful?  My index rate was 8.25.  Is that high?  Could it decrease with consistent use of the antiviral herbs I am  taking?   My physician was not much help.  Said HSV1 is quite common, use mouthwash, and that was it!!

Again, I'm VERY GREATFUL for all the help I've received from you and others on this website.

Sincere thanks!

If this is a recent infection you have every chance of Killing it before it sets up shop in your system. Can you find a Master Herbalist or Naturopathic Doctor (ND) in your area that you know is reputable? What is good for one person may not be effective for another and it can be expensive and time consuming to find what is right for you by experimentation. Also know that if you are killing off a lot of crap in your system you could go through Herxheimer reaction which will make you feel very ill as your body is processing but not able to eliminate fast enough. Not sure what your diet and lifestyle are but brilliant to remove sugar! It shuts the immune system down to work on processing it. The more processed foods you eliminate the better you are. You will learn that is not real food and does not sustain our bodies well! Convenient yes!

My Naturopath uses Applied Kinesiology on me so my body tells him what it needs and is appropriate. We change over time so to have a guide is invaluable. There is a way you can ask your body yourself. Look up Dowsing for Health. Did you know the U.S. Military used pendulums to dowse for landmines in Vietnam war? Life is a Landmine! There are so many sites. You are looking for information on the subject not where to buy a pendulum. You probably wear or own a chain with something that hangs from it, Pendulum!!! A teabag on a string is a Pendulum!!! You can ask yourself when and if you are experiencing an outbreak. You can ask if there is viral shedding. You can ask what foods or supplements are appropriate to eat that day to help. We are Ego driven so before asking questions start with "Stand Aside Ego". You want your answers from positive energy not negative thoughts and fear based.

It will take a bit of practice and you may need someone to show you how but this puts your life back into your hands. It saddened me to hear you plan on celibacy for the rest of your life. I have dealt with HSV2 for 35yrs and with knowledge and respect for others I would not think twice about being with the proper person. They may have the virus and not know it as they don't have symptoms. Won't show up in regular testing unless active, that is why this virus is so prevalent.

Of course I would ask my pendulum if this person is right for me!!! I am 60 and do not want to waste time on the wrong person.

You are on a journey of discovery and sometimes what we think is the worst thing to happen to us may offer us blessing we never expected!!!!

Hugs!

SureWhyNot,

I'm beyond grateful for your continued information and support.

As far as I know this is a recent infection.  I thought this evolved from a recent relationship.  However, after all the reading I've done, I may have already had this virus in my system.  I've had a weak immune system for many years.  The only time I've ever had a cold sore was in high school when I had a very bad cold.  (I'm now 65 and have not had any since then.) Nor have I had any with this recent diagnosis of  HSV1.     I can honestly say that if I had not tested I would not know that I have this virus!!!

I've been working on the bad odors I've previously discussed and they've substantially subsided.  I'm going to make an appt for test for vaginosis/thrush,  I'm de-stressing, resting more, taking olive leaf extract, folic acid, etc. , staying away from negative people/situations, trying to maintain a continuous positive focus,  etc.

I will be getting in touch with well-qualified ND/Herbalist, etc.

I contacted my ex-boyfriend (have had absolutely  no contact with him in about 5 months) and asked him to contact me when he gets his test results but have not heard from him. Has been about 2 weeks.  I wouldn't put it past him to either not test or not inform me of results if he did test. He also indicated during our meeting that his faith will override the problem and it will just go away!  (Very narcissistic individual!)  Should I call and see If he tested or would that be violating  his privacy, considered "harrassing" him, etc.??  (Found out he had cheated  on me with  other women before we stopped seeing each  other.   He's the only person I've had sex with in about a 10 year period.)

Also, thank you for info about pendalum. Has merit.

I'm still searching for answers regarding my index number on my test results. My number was 8.25 and "the over the line" number is 1.1. Do you know if my number could fluctuate?

As far as dating, I've closed the door to any potential relationship.  I have been a very clean women and the stigma this has placed on me is not who I am!   The thought of telling a potential lover is depressing!   I'm determined to be "cured!"   (Polio is a virus and a cure was found!!   Why not for this "other virus!??")

Once again, I am beyond greatful for the memos you have sent me.  I read and re-read every word sent as I search diligently for any helpful info I can find!!

Many, many thank you's for your kindness.   Prayers for your Prosperity!

I LOVE your belief in yourself regarding defeating this virus. I believe the Earth is no longer flat and that a Man DID Walk On the Moon! Look up "Dr. Sebi 2015!"

Whenever you get strange feelings picture this army or yours fighting for you. Mine are little pac-men going around my system eating up the virus along the way. You would be amazed at the power of suggestion. Of course I live in reality where I would not use this as a defense to protect another during sex. This is my visualization of healing only. Works well with the mind to support my health.

I am honestly not up to speed on the test info so have no input there. I have had mine so long I never bother with medical tests now only with my Naturopath and we deal with whatever is going on at the time. I read there is no smell with HSV, but in all honesty, I Can smell it coming! I have had HSV2 for 35yrs and I know every twitch, tingle and smell that is associated with an impending outbreak, meaning it is already active, so I go after it with my army of resources and most times it never rears its ugly head. Each and every one of us deals with this differently so just because your symptoms are atypical does not mean this is not real! If it Quacks like a Duck!....some ducks are just cuter than others and maybe smell better! Ideally it is not HSV1 but either way there will be education around it that will lead to healing other aspects of your health.

I love this site in all ways. It has opened my eyes to the lack of education and fear around this. There are no answers that fit everyone universally but there is lots of help here on whatever level people can personally accept. Want to scream when I read this is just a skin infection. For some yes, for me a nightmare that goes on and on manifesting itself in so many more ways than a simple infection. You are fighting for you and let others fight their way. I have a Very Nasty strain that overran my life for years. It was also associated with a violent ugly experience so I gave it more life force than I could avoid. Once I came to terms I fought back with every ammunition I could find. Holistic medicine has given me so many life tools and it is all up to me, not pharma.

I came in contact with Hep C during surgery and during my time of 6 mth detox diet, herb supplements under supervision of Master Herbalist, and general care for myself I was the most vibrant, energetic and whole person! I proved to myself the power of nutrition. I have papers that say I killed the virus, just was in contact with it. Had to listen to verbal admonishment from the Most respected Liver specialist in my city for using herbs because yes they can have a dangerous or negative effect if not used under trained supervision. Allopathic medicine had no answers for me. If they can't prescribe a pill or cut it out they are done with it! I will never give up fighting for my health! Fine, my life My Way!

Your Life, Your Way my friend!!! Please know you are still a very clean woman, you just have an unwanted life experience. Imagine finding another who may be in exactly the same position as you (or has something he believes no one would accept him for, but you would think nothing of once you knew the person) and you have both taken yourself out of life through fear and lack of education!

You deserve total happiness, education around this will allow that, in your time.

Believe in You!!!!! I do!!

Hello SureWhyNot !

Once again, I am so taken aback by your most recent reply that I intentionally put off responding.

First of all..this is SO UNCANNY!! When I sent my last message to you, I did not send that pic with my message!!

However, the pic is familiar!  In the past week I had been doing research on the Malbork Castle near Gdansk, Poland.  It is the largest brick castle by surface area in the world.  It was built for the Order of Teutonic Knights and served as a hospital/retreat for the wounded knights.  My mother's family emerged from and lived in that area for at least a few centuries.

Ever since I  was diagnosed with HSV1 my life has gone thru a lot of changes!  This includes setting a goal of going to Europe with a specific goal of going to the Gdansk area. And what is even more uncanny is I suddenly "just so happened" to discover a way to get there! A set of events quickly moved into place.    Weird!!    And...my mind threw in a memory; One of my my mother's middle names is "Hedwig"  which translates  to "warlike."  She was a very strong European  survivor!  When I saw that pic I thought of my mother, her strength, her roots, etc.  I'm I reading too much emotional drama into all of this?  Absolutely not!  There's much more to all of this but I just don't want to take up your time!!

In short, that pic of the Teutonic Knights and memories of my strong and loving mother keep me fighting and moving forward!

Thanks for sharing your HSV history, solutions, feelings, etc.  Your light has lifted me out of this pit I've been in!  I have an adventurous goal to work toward while working on my healing process!  I feel positive and positively different!

I started taking L-lysine, probiotics, have appointment with doctor, etc.

SureWhyNot....You have helped birth me into a new dimension of my life.  I am not afraid.

Thanks so much!

Prayers for Your Peace and Prosperity!

I am shaking writing this because I KNOW there are things beyond our belief that impact our lives. I loved that you sent Crusaders as I could see how easy they would be to believe in!!! Not surprised they were not initially intended after what you said here. Guess that was something we both needed to see, You to believe and for me to reinforce it is OK to post for people to believe in themselves and the power they still have over this. I know I am offending some and others are dismissing this as nonsense. That is Free Will!

Please know I have no Religion and this is not what I am about.  I Do Believe in our own powers and abilities!

I mentioned supplements I take and some I have done research on being effective for others as a way to reach out to show there are always options to something that seems so desolate. Some have amazing results, then others nothing, so it is very personal, no one pill quick fix for anybody! I referenced Dr. Sebi only based on a quick search for someone who believes in a cure. Further researching may prove negatives for this so I will continue only to site those I have experienced myself that work for me. None of this should cost a fortune as this seems to. That makes me suspect of greed and opportunity to exploit those in fear and need. True Healers make themselves affordable!!!

I only take what my naturopath muscle tests me for (Applied Kinesiology) since we are so individual in what we need to fight with. Hard to find a Naturopath who uses this modality as a diagnostic tool. Some are Intuative and that is a huge blessing. Are you familiar with Dowsing? Please look it up as I am sure you will find it interesting. There are so many sites trying to sell something but just search for the history of it and the way to use it and you will see it can be used for health and determining what is best for you.

These tools are My Army and I fight every step of the way and have been successful at living a normal healthy life. Probably more healthy because I was forced to learn in a different direction. I just had a visit with my Naturopath yesterday and asked him about something I was told by my Master Herbalist. He confirmed, This virus can be stopped from setting up shop in us if we go after it upon initial contact. The more we fight the stronger we get!

You may find Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) interesting. This is probably more than many others want to read so please feel free to Private Message me if there is anything you want to discuss further.

Hugs and Blessings to you My Friend!      "There are More Things In Heaven and Earth, Horatio"

Good Morning!   Once again, so uncanny!  There is an article on dowsing sitting on my bedstand. Article in yesterday's paper!  Plan to read later.

As soon as I got up this morning, my intuition quickly led me to check this site.

Thanks so much for prompt reply. I am healing. I have a lot to do this a.m. so I will be responding later.  I will attempt to utilize Private Messenging.

A Huge Hug and a Wonderful Day for You!

NOTE TO SELF. Read the previous posts before responding!

My apologies for the redundancy as I only responded to the last posts and now realized I repeated myself. Really not trying to beat you over the head with this. Did I mention I was 60 and the brain farts sometimes!!!!

That's ok.  I think there are important points that need emphasis.  I'm doing same myself.   Nothing you have written is wasted!  I read and re-read.  I appreciate all your input and time!  Thank you!

I had a very busy day.  Ready to collapse.  I just found out that public broadcasting has scheduled a documentary -- Battle Castle, about building this awesome Malbork Castle for the Teutonic Knights, at 3 pm mountain time.  This is all getting very eerie for me!!!

I looked up Dr. Sebi!  Wow!!!  Intriguing!  I will definitely be looking at this very closely.

Well, can't keep eyes open.  Tomorrow I have company a good part of the day.  Will re-connect soon.

Abundance and Joy to You!

I really suggest that the best thing is for both you and your boyfriend to obtain the Westernblot HSV test. He has a 50%+ chance of being positive and you have a 50%+ chance of being negative. Only the Westernblot can sort this out for you.
    • WilsoInAus
Hi @kpn the first thing to note is that it is all OK to have HSV-1 or indeed any HSV type. It is not negligence, it is just being human. Oral HSV-1 is not an STD in the sense that the primary transmission is non sexual and the majority of it occurs between parents to children. If any of your children contracted HSV, you would know it. It wouldn't be a silent infection for children. HSV-2 tends not to shed from the oral region for people who have it there in any event. At age 73, about 80% of the population has HSV-1. There is no reason to believe that your mother isn't one of those people. About half of all carriers of oral HSV-1 do not realise they have it and have no living memory of cold sores as they were infected when very young. The most logical explanation is that your mother has oral HSV-1 from her childhood and that your daughter doesn't have oral HSV. Not that it is relevant to anyone but yourself, but your wife might find she actually has genital HSV-1 having had an untyped swab when she was diagnosed.
    • WilsoInAus
Hi @Dylan86 and welcome to the website. First note that you cannot pragmatically become infected with HSV-1 from sharing a drink. If you carry HSV-1, it did not come from that episode. As such it is extremely unlikely HSV-1 is the primary cause of your issues. Can the WB miss a HSV-1 infection? Rarely but its feasible in less than 1% of carriers who test with WB. Note that the WB does not have values, it has positive or negative as you say. It is way more accurate than IgG as it looks for all 30+ antibodies that are in your blood for HSV. Could you have HSV-1? Yes it is feasible, but it would be a very old childhood infection. Could HSV-1 be causing your oral issues? No herpes will not cause the burning mouth syndrome you describe. Could some of the lesions be herpes related? It is feasible if you are a carrier. But it is unlikely to be the primary cause of the issues, but its an opportunistic virus that can cause issues when something else is taxing your immune system. The best thing you can do is the PCR test on a oral lesion and that will be pretty definitive. Either way, in summary. I'd suggest there is <1% chance you are part of about 70% of the population that has HSV-1. Further there is less than a 1% chance that herpes is the primary cause of your issues.

My wife has had hsv 2 for around 8 years. We have two young children 3 years old and 18 months old. My wife only had one outbreak when she was first infected so we didn't worry too much about passing it on to our children. I understand the risk to be pretty low under those circumstances. I don't believe my wife took antivirals during either pregnancy. My younger child has diaper rashes pretty often and has had what I thought was hand foot and mouth disease. That was going around the daycare a while back. I haven't really given it much concern though.  About a week ago, my mother kissed my youngest on the lips. My kid was congested at the time but they pretty much always are. About 3 days later, my mother developed a cold sore on her mouth. She has never had cold sores in her life and she is 73 and happily married so she is not going around messing with anyone. She pointed to the fact she had kissed my youngest and presumed that is where she was infected. At first I said that's not possible since my child has never had any cold sores but since then I have really started to consider that maybe it is possible she contracted it from my daughter. This has me worried that my daughter does indeed have hsv2 and was shedding in her mouth. Does anyone have any experience with this? I am really losing sleep about this. Two people I care so much about got hsv from my negligence. I am fine if I were to contract it, I am not worried about what others think at this point in my life. I just don't want anyone else to have it.

Hello DavidGua.... based on the two pictures, I'm not seeing anything that resembles a typical herpes outbreak.  I am not sure what those spots are on your penis.  Please have a doctor take a look and I'm sure you'll get a proper diagnosis.  Have you ever received an HSV antibody test (IgG)?  Again, I doubt your symptoms are herpes-related but, if you'd like some peace of mind, you could request the IgG antibody test for HSV2.   Best of luck.... let us know if you have any other questions/concerns.
