Transmission ? - He has HSV Orally VS I have GHSV2

I'm seeing someone who has HSV orally but not sure what type. He's had it for 15+ years. I have GHSV2. I know the estimated transmission rates for someone who does not have any type of HSV but how does having HSV already affect the transmission rates.

I want to know how this affects the chances of me passing my HSV2 along genitally.

If he has HSV2 orally (which is really rare so I doubt it) it should basically be close to impossible for him to get it from you on his genitals.

If he has HSV1 orally (much more likely) then this offers him some protection but he could still get HSV2 from you, it does lower the risk though which is already really low with condoms and anti virals.

What if my wife has HSV 1 and I have hsv2 and I take daily antivirals what r the changes of transmission note my outbreak occurred on the very base of my penis which would not be in her and she wants to have a child

Hey Terrell,

I believe with anti-virals you have a 4-5% chance on an annual basis of passing it on to your wife.

What this means is that if you have sex 2-3 times a week for a year there's a 5% chance she'll contract it.

As I understand it, having HSV1 provides some protection against HSV2 - but it's not absolute and I have not read a study which provides exact percentages on how much this reduces transmission risk, however, it is theorized that the decline in oral HSV1 infections in children is a large factor in the rise of genital HSV infections (as less people have anti bodies before they're becoming sexually active). So it does offer some protection. Whereas already having HSV2 basically offers almost full protection from HSV1

The location of your OBs sadly does not matter, as the virus can be shedding anywhere in the genital region (though I have read a study which stated this mainly occurs on the penile shaft in men as the skin is thin there). I would recommend using lots of lube, you want to minimize friction which could cause any micro tears or cuts during sex which could lead to transmission.

Other then that I don't think there's that much you can do. Five percent may sound like a lot but you can look at it this way, there's a 95% chance that she'll not contract it which are really good odds.

Hi @WhatDidIDo2023, hopefully all is well with you and your significant other and are still together.   Did she develop any other symptoms after you mentioned her getting itchiness? Was it determined what you had was contagious? Most likely developed a fungal disease and caused her a yeast or uti

Hi @Luna 01 I really feel it is worthwhile obtaining a proper Herpeselect test given the outcomes of the home panel test. Regardless, your current symptoms are almost certainly not related to herpes. Hopefully, your doctor can assist in resolving these.
