Lysine

Hi. I just wanted to share something that's been helping. I am taking a gram of Valtrex and still getting weekly outbreaks. I got the 1000mg. of Lysine, and since I've started it (2-3 weeks) I've been clear! It's supposed to be good for preventing colds and flu too!

Layla,

Have you considered stopping the Valtrex to see if the lysine alone could hold off an outbreak? Obviously you wouldn't want to induce an outbreak, but I know that Valtrex might not be something you want to take for an extended period of time. Your experience could shed some light on the lysive vs. valtrex issue.

Hi Cain. My boyfriend stopped his valtrex, and is doing great on the lysine alone.

I haven't tried stopping V yet because my outbreaks have been so vicious and I'm enjoying the break! I am going to stop my valtrex in about a month, and I'll be sure to share the results!

Layla,

I forgot to ask you...how much lysine do you take at a time? How much in a day? Which brand are you using? Sorry for so many questions...it just seems like this is the one thing that consistently works for suppression. Thanks.

Cain,

I am taking one 1000 tablet of Lysine daily. If I feel like an outbreak is coming, I'll take two in a day. I am really impressed with the way my outbreaks have stopped. Like I said, high amounts of valtrex did nothing. One dose of Lysine and I felt instantly better. I've had a couple stressful days where I felt itching starting, so I'd double up on Lysine and it was gone within a day.

The other thing I take sometimes is Olive Leaf extract. From what I've read it's a very good antiviral too.

I'll second that Layla.

I too am on Lysine and Olive Leaf Extract too. Here are my own experiences:

L-lysine

This will stop any minor outbreaks almost immediately. I usually take 1000mg when I feel anything coming. 2000mg if I'm under stress and the prodome feeling is coming on strongly. However, I won't recommend taking it daily. Might make your body immune to it later. All drugs have that tendency.

Olive Leaf Extract

This one is much better as it's a natural herb. It won't cause immunity later on. And there's no danger of overdose as they've lab tested on mice and found that there's no danger even at 100 times overdose. My personal experience is that upon taking 4 capsules of 300mg at 18% active compound, the itching turns to gentle cooling and eases off. However, the down side is that this is more expensive than L-lysine. So there's no way you can take this daily.

Oh no! I have been taking lysine daily. I hate the thought of not taking it daily because I've been outbreak free. Although, I tried going on the Lysine alone, without Valtrex, and I had outbreaks. I really hate to hear I could get immune to Lysine. :( I'm not sure if the Olive leaf has been hugely beneficial, but I'll give it a shot without the Lysine and see.

Layla,

What Lei said happens to me, too.

I was taking lysine daily, but I felt that it made my body immune to it. So I stopped it, then started taking only when I'm about to get an outbreak. It seems working better that way...

Lysine immunity?

Dear Layla,

Lysine is not a drug. It's an amino acid that is naturally found in a variety of foods ... especially meat. I don't know if your body can become immune to it since is naturally found in the body. One doctor told me that it doesn't hurt your body to take it all the time, one website said that you might want to beware of taking too much of it because it might block the creation of other amino acids, and the person who answered the national herpes hotline number told me that it should be ok as long as you take the recommended dosage on the bottle. Also, we have Faith's account ... so really, the answer is quite ambiguous.

I would recommend calling a doctor or pharmacist because I believe that they would know best. Come to think of it, call more than one ... never hurts to have more than one opinion!

Hi all,

The brand I'm using is Bluebonnet Herbals Olive Leaf Extract at 300mg and at 18% Oleuropein.

I usually alternate between this and L-lysine so that I minimise the chances of becoming immune to it.

We don't become immune to drugs alone. Even supplements have that effect. I don't know why but it just happens. Maybe our body "gets used to it", just like coffee?

Hi @WhatDidIDo2023, hopefully all is well with you and your significant other and are still together.   Did she develop any other symptoms after you mentioned her getting itchiness? Was it determined what you had was contagious? Most likely developed a fungal disease and caused her a yeast or uti

Hi @Luna 01 I really feel it is worthwhile obtaining a proper Herpeselect test given the outcomes of the home panel test. Regardless, your current symptoms are almost certainly not related to herpes. Hopefully, your doctor can assist in resolving these.
