Did anyone teach you about herpies or STD's?

One thing that's bothering me is the fact that I was never taught about STD's. I remember one lesson in health class on 9th grade where they passed around photos of different STD's but besides that I remember nothing! I just became sexually ative last year (due to extreme shyness!) I feel like my parents were always embarrassed about sex and never even uttered the word around me. I'm also so upset with myself that I never took the time to educate myself. The one good thing that may come out of this is that I now know to openly ask the next person I date about their history. I'll always be open and honest and hope that my partners down the road will do the same.

I was never taught about STDs also. I started doing my own research when I became sexually active. Never really looked into herpes thou. Sure my mom would tell me to be careful. What pisses me off is the fact that doctors don't check for that in an annual check up. So if your not really aware of how it works and you go asking if everything is okay and they say it is, then people assume they are clean but in fact they might have herpes without even knowing it. I understand they only test if a patient show symptoms because there's a lot of false negative or false positive but they should make it clear that the check up doesn't include herpes free. So I cant be mad at my passed relationships. I'm mad the health care system.

Yeah and the stigma hit me pretty hard since I'm originally from Asia and we don't have sex ed or STD education so the regret and self-hating are as bad as stigma. Hoping is the only way to get me out of suicidal thoughts. I know that a lot has been done and I'm glad. I just hope they continue with the hsv research instead of abandoning it cuz it's not life-threatening and I also hope that the big pharma conspiracy isn't real.

Thx so much. However HSV can affect the trigeminal nerve/from post herpetic neuralgia and can actually cause all these symptoms. Some people, once affected can have short term symptoms,  while others have sporadic flare ups and some are permanently affected. Gabapentin for trigeminal neuralgia, prescribed by my neurologist, did help me for some time,  but I'm glad to be off it.  Hope my post helps someone w similar issues who havent gotten help from primary care Dr.

@Dvm you can be assured that HSV is not the cause of these issues. As you have found, it’s likely a spinal issue and it sounds like you have found some help. Stick with that.
