A HSV cure will be a byproduct of an HIV cure

Because there are billions of dollars towards finding an HIV cure, and very little into finding a cure for herpes. Also, it is very likely that whatever is delivered as an HIV cure, will be able to be applied to herpes, as it will either be something that either destroys all viruses without harming healthy cells, or it will be HIV specific, but but the technology will be able to be applied to HSV. The irony in all of this is that genital herpes is the biggest driving factor in the spread of HIV. This is a fact that is almost completely ignored because of the double stigma. In South Africa, one epidemic has led to another, and in 2016 there is very little reporting on this. When have you ever seen a movie or documentary about HIV where herpes is mentioned? There aren't any. The sooner there is an urgency for both, the sooner we will see a cure.

I think we need to be careful here. It may be a factor in South Africa, but it doesn't mean it is a factor elsewhere or the driving factor. There are so many factors at play, and to say that HSV is the biggest driving factor in the spread of HIV is alarmist.

When you look at statistics for HIV on a country to country basis, the profile of HIV is very different for each country.

Apart from being viruses and research going in to that, HIV doesn't usually infect nerve cells..so if HIV is cured that approach may not necessarily benefit or target herpes. There would still need to be a successful vector created to access the nerves.

If you're hinting at CRISPR/Cas, while HIV could drive the use of the technology in humans, it won't be readily transferable to HSV.  As oneday mentioned, the viruses are different in nature and reside in different areas of the body.

It's possible that lessons learned can certainly be shared in particular cases and this rings true with all applications of CRISPR/Cas.
