Dietary lysine

Recommended Posts

I often hear about using lysine, as a preventative measure especially. However, my diet contains ~11g of lysine daily (and 9-10g arginine), from food sources. I'm planning on giving a 1g tablet daily a go because, hell, why not?, but given I'm already eating 11g (which is 1-2g more than I do arginine), 1g doesn't seem that substantial.

Is it really that effective?

I would like to know your opinion as well.   I mostly eat lysine friendly foods (mango, pineapple, and seafood) however am considering a 500 mg supplement twice daily.   With this diet is this really needed or mostly a placebo effect.   My fear is if i experiment with high arginine foods like (blueberries, nuts, etc.), which i love,  then the OBs will come back.   Your help and experience greatly appreciated.

I honestly think you are wasting your time. supplementing with additional lysine won't make a scrap of difference to the virus. Just eat a balanced, healthy diet, not because of the virus, but because it's good for you.

Drink alcohol in moderation, but other than that, I wouldn't cut out foods that you like simply because they contain arginine. Having chocolate every now and then will not cause a break out.

Just relax, eat a balanced diet and enjoy your life.

I have been on this website almost daily for 7 1/2 years and I have seen many posts from people who claim that taking lysine has helped them.

Of course, your recommendation about a balance diet is helpful, don't ignore the possible benefits of taking lysine in helping prevent outbreaks.

Which is what I was doing, before having the worst outbreak of my life! Hence looking into all this again.
