Blood test negative? culture positive?

So I was diagnosed last year in June thru a culture test after having my first outbreak. Well, ever year I go get a STD screening at my OBGYN and I was negative across the board. I've been on anti virals since December and I'm wondering if that had any interferences with my blood test? Of course I know I definitely have it. I am just wondering has this happen to anyone else?

Hi yes being on antivirals can effect your blood tests results. I also test negative through blood test. I'm on daily Valtrex too, one thing I've been wondering if it's safe to stay on the Valtrex longterm? Did your doctor mention anything about it?

My doctor didn't mention anything, but I have been wondering the same thing. I'm going to call and ask. How long were you on antivirals and how many mg's are you taking? Just wondering

I have been on the Valtrex (25mg) daily since December but before then I took a 7 day dude abd a 10 day rise which was 3 pills every 3 hours so I was probably full of Valtrex when I took my blood tests! How are your OBs? I get a few littke lesions that pop up and burning in my vulva even on Valrex but I'm praying my body gets better over time. Please let me know what your doctor says.

All doctors I know coincide on the fact that you can take'em sine die. They say the only problem is the emotional attachment to the meds, like if you feel you can only feel good if you are under treatment, it's not good for you, but if one does not have negative side effects when you start, you will never have them.

Anyway, Valtrex reduces shedding a lot, so even if you took 50 tests, you'd probably always test negative. I'm glad it works for you and me, some people don't get that lucky and it really can help forget it a bit.

Reality is nobody knows why so many test negative on blood tests. I think the science is poor for this virus. Many have it with negative blood tests especially if antivirals were used at onset. Even off antivirals for a long time, many stay negative (just search in forums). I don't think it really matters much which test including western blot. The so called experts know very little. Culture and PCR are always right if positive but if negative say nothing. Trust your body. It doesn't lie.

Hang on, it is important to check exactly what tests have been undertaken here. Only the IgG antibody test type specific for HSV-1 and HSV-2 has credibility. Was this the test undertaken?

STD screening will not typically include HSV and even if it does, may only include HSV-2.

This test misses perhaps 10-25% of HSV-1 infections but less than 1% of HSV-2. The vast majority of these are for people who have had the virus for more than about 20 years owing to zero-reversion. This makes it one of the more accurate tests for viruses available, surpassed pretty much only by HIV in terms of accuracy.

The Wedternblot is over 99% accurate all up. That's super in the diagnostic world!

My outbreaks aren't bad at all. Do you get ob's often? I seem to always get them on my back side (buttocks area). I've had three ob's since my initial diagnosis (last june), not sure if thats the norm or not?! i will definitely let you know what my doc says!

My last blood test was at 17 weeks. I'm 7 months in now but haven't tried to retest. I'll probably try at the 1 year mark.

Would like to hear from others regarding negative blood tests and positive symptoms or swab...seems like many of us fall into this category. What to do?

Just got my year results .90 for hsv 2. The latest is my 4th igg. negative all 4: .69;.46;.90.;.90; hsv 1 >5 on all 4. Really dont want to spend the $ for western blot. Initial swab said hsv 2 but gyno said not typed properly. I have been on antivirals for a year now.

Hi Lillian,

I haven't tested IGG for a while.  I was doing well and have lowered my Valtrex from 1 gram per day to 500 mg.  Today I noticed a rash which I haven't seen before.  Could be an OB.  Going to Doctor on Friday.   How are you?

If you have symptoms and have been tested virus well there really isn't any necessity to have a blood test unless the type was not determined by the swaB.  I tested positive fire a swap and my doctor says there's no reason to do a blood test because it can be inaccurate.

  • 2 weeks later...

I took the meds for seven days after having my 1st ob and waiting on both blood and cultures. I tested negative on blood test and positive on cultures. But valtrex was not mentioned. Should I be taking this daily? Help!

I’m going to force him to get tested ! Thanks for your help !

@EssenceL25 there really isn't a question mark around the source, it's your latest partner. The median time from infection to an outbreak of lesions upon initial infection is 4 days.  The only thing that isn't certain is the type I suggest.
    • EssenceL25
I asked if it was hsv 1 or 2 and the doctor said it was Hsv2. I’m not sure i just asked him when he was tested last he said this year I said I think we should go test together and he agreed . I’m going to bring it up again cause I really need to know if he gave this to me I wasn’t sure since it was so close to my previous relationship.

@EssenceL25 then it is all beyond reasonable doubt that the current partner is the source. A 'perfect' fit in terms of timing, symptoms and swab. It may be though that the type is not technically known. Culture swabs are very often not typed and just assumed to be HSV-2 if taken from a genital location. If you received oral sex in the days leading into 7 March then it is 50/50 as to whether this is HSV-1 or HSV-2. You could contact your doctor and confirm if the swab was actually typed (which is a second test where fluorescent antibodies for HSV-1 and HSV-2 are added and see which one 'glows').  If that test wasn't done then you do not know type. If you have oral HSV-1 yourself (cold sores) then this will be HSV-2. Does your partner have oral HSV-1? It is somewhat strange for him not to rush and test - many people have a 'reaction' if they truly do not know their status and have concerns that you infected them etc. (not initially rational of course). This indicates he may know his status - or maybe he just isn't simply the sharpest tool in the shed!?
    • EssenceL25
I had flu like symptoms and ulcers on my vagina . They did a culture and I tested positive for hsv2. I asked my partner to get tested he agreed but I’m not sure if he will cause he hasn’t said anything else about it.
