Please help! Could my partner and I have Herpes?

Hello,

I am in a lesbian relationship with my girlfriend. We have been together 8 months. Her ex girlfriend of a year had Herpes but didn't tell my Girlfriend until their relationship became serious and wouldn't have told her at all if she hadn't slipped up. Her ex told her that her herpes was dormant so it wasn't possible for her to catch. Obviously my Girlfriend at the time believed her and just carried on life as normal with no safe sex procedures. This is very difficult me speaking about this as its my Girlfriends past and also I have Chronic Kidney Disease and I am almost 1 year post transplant.

My Girlfriend told me about this not knowing how serious this was. She had previously done the usual STI tests such as Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea which both come back negative.

My Girlfriend has no idea if she has caught herpes or not. She has had no signs or symptoms of herpes ever, so we are hoping and preying that she has been lucky and not caught it.

Before my girlfriend I had an abnormal result on my smear test and had to have a Colposcopy to remove the top cells and later on I had another smear and it came back clear.

I bleed the majority of the time we have sex (foreplay) and my girlfriend can find sex uncomfortable sometimes. I know this can be a number of other things and I have bled before during intercourse.

I just would really like to know how likely is it that my girlfriend may have contracted this virus?

I am worried sick, because if I have it. It is so dangerous being a kidney patient as well, especially being on anti rejections which supresses my immune system. I haven't had no flare ups, just bleeding during intercourse.

I just need some advice, as I am worried sick. We have got hold of some legit home tests, to do with finger pricking but my partner doesn't finish work until late this evening and I just need as much advice as I can, please help!

Neither of us have any sores or any signs of any kind of outbreak. We are doing a home test tonight to do with pricking the finger and placing the blood in test area

Hi Littlecupcake

Please try not to worry as everything you say suggests you are both fine!

One thing you need to be aware of is that if you or your gf test positive for HSV1 don't panic as that could be an old oral cold sore infection. It can be a bit of a red herring.

I'm also in the U.K. But not familiar with the test (although I think someone on here from the UK has used it thro Samedaydoctor)

If you go to GUM and explain your medical  concern they should do an IGG test for you but you'd have to be assertive with them. I'd only do that if you want further confirmation of the thumb prick test tho.

To be honest I suspect it will all come back negative, but just don't get over anxious if there is HSV1, especially if either of you have had cold sores, even if you haven't, some people have it and don't know.

Come back and let us know how you get on

Take care

Thank you Lucy. I hope they do come back negative and everything will be okay. These tests weren't cheap, my girlfriend is testing herself tonight as if she hasn't got it then I won't have it. Unfortunately her ex failed to tell her for a few months and she never tells her sexual partners neither. It was Genital Herpes that she had but until now me and my girlfriend were unaware that there was two types. My Girlfriend is worried because if she has it and its been passed on to me she said she would never forgive herself because its quite dangerous for someone in my position. I would never leave her because of it. Its been an awful year for us so far so I am just hoping that we get the negative tests. It is just a major worry, she won't be home until 9pm but I will be sure to tell you how she got on. Lets hope its good news. Thank you for your nice words

I’m going to force him to get tested ! Thanks for your help !

@EssenceL25 there really isn't a question mark around the source, it's your latest partner. The median time from infection to an outbreak of lesions upon initial infection is 4 days.  The only thing that isn't certain is the type I suggest.

I asked if it was hsv 1 or 2 and the doctor said it was Hsv2. I’m not sure i just asked him when he was tested last he said this year I said I think we should go test together and he agreed . I’m going to bring it up again cause I really need to know if he gave this to me I wasn’t sure since it was so close to my previous relationship.

@EssenceL25 then it is all beyond reasonable doubt that the current partner is the source. A 'perfect' fit in terms of timing, symptoms and swab. It may be though that the type is not technically known. Culture swabs are very often not typed and just assumed to be HSV-2 if taken from a genital location. If you received oral sex in the days leading into 7 March then it is 50/50 as to whether this is HSV-1 or HSV-2. You could contact your doctor and confirm if the swab was actually typed (which is a second test where fluorescent antibodies for HSV-1 and HSV-2 are added and see which one 'glows').  If that test wasn't done then you do not know type. If you have oral HSV-1 yourself (cold sores) then this will be HSV-2. Does your partner have oral HSV-1? It is somewhat strange for him not to rush and test - many people have a 'reaction' if they truly do not know their status and have concerns that you infected them etc. (not initially rational of course). This indicates he may know his status - or maybe he just isn't simply the sharpest tool in the shed!?

I had flu like symptoms and ulcers on my vagina . They did a culture and I tested positive for hsv2. I asked my partner to get tested he agreed but I’m not sure if he will cause he hasn’t said anything else about it.
