question about anti virals (dosage)

    Recommended Posts

    Hey guys,

Recently went to the DR's and got prescribed valtrex for suppressant therapy.  The doctor had told me that the dosages had changed from 2 tablets a day to 1 if you havre less then 10 OB's a year.

has anyone else heard of this? ... will this still be sufficient against transmitting to partners?...

    thank you

I think you can still transmit to partners, Valtrex lowers the chances of it.  I saw a table of the % of transmitting w/o condom, condom, and condom with Valtrex and it is very low percentage with condom with Valtrex.  Wish I could find that table.  Anyway, an infectious disease doctor told me that you have to be taking Valtrex for 2 weeks before having sex also to be effective.  I am not that big so he suggested .5g instead of 1g a day for suppressive daily therapy.  But during an outbreak, that would be different.

I'm assuming he has given you 500mg pills, and is talking about the 500mg x2 dosage protocol. That is usually used for first year and people with many recurrent OBs. Most people who do not have lots of OB are on 500mg x1 for suppression.

Antivirals do not completely remove the possibility of transmission. They do heavily, HEAVILY lower it (to between 5% -2% risk male to female in a year for sex every week twice a week)

I was on the same thing. Didn't have a partner but, taking one dose of 1000 is just more convenient. No change in the meds itself.
