urinary retention

hi all.

so my first outbreak was around two weeks ago, and as if that experience wasn't traumatizing enough, i am now sufferring from urinary retention (cannot pass urine at all). let me give you a little backstory: 3 days after my unprotected sexual encounter when i got infected, i began noticing symptoms. it started with a strange tingling/burning feeling in my vagina. this started slowly progressing into bumps, sores, ulcers--everything you would never want to see on your vagina. so i went to the dr and she prescribed me with valacyclovir for 10 days. the first few days on the meds were hell and i thought the pain/discomfort would never end. peeing felt like acid pouring out of my body. luckily this lasted for only a week. i also thought i had a uti due to my urine coming out in two streams and having such difficulty passing (my test results hadn't come in yet at this time). fast forward to day 10 of the meds....all symptoms of my outbreak were gone. no more sores or burning or pain!!! i survived my first outbreak. all that was left was the urinary incontinence and this strange tingle of my nerves between my butthole and vagina and my urinary incontinence. my urinary incontinence quickly became retention. i went to the ER only to have them place a foley catheter inside me. they drained all my urine on site and i thought okay you're good to go. little did i know, a bag of my own piss would be attached to my leg for one week. after the week, i am to see my urologist where they will remove the catheter and see if i can pass on my own. if not, it's back to the catheter for another week.

although this seems like more of a rant, i rather just want to know has anyone else experienced this terrible complication!? i say complication because when i asked one of the ER nurses if this is like a symptom they said no it's more of a complication and you kinda got the short end of the stick:( back to my question, i just didn't see a full forum on urinary retention with hsv 2 so i thought i should start one. being as uncommon as it is, there are still a great deal of people who deal with this issue.

also, if you have had this issue with your first outbreak, has it ever come back? how frequently?

please let me know! new to this whole herpes thing and i would at least like to know what i'm getting myself into. thanks for reading this whole fucking rant if you're all the way down to this point :)

hi, it really gets better. i've only had two minor outbreaks since this post. i, however, am on daily antivirals which eases them. since then, i haven't had any urinary retention problems again and i sure hope i don't have to deal with that ever again   but it gets better

Yes 3 years ago, (just passed my 3 yr herpe anniversary!) I got the same thing.. Wore a foley for a week, then what my urologist had to do was dilate my urethra. (painful as F) But I was ok since. I still have paranoia over all that though and feel sometimes I may have incontinence and weird sensations at times since. I haven't been the same since at all. But it was the worst and scariest experience of my life having urinary retention.

Is it possible the burning sensations is from ruptured connective tissue?

I am very sorry you had to go through that as I know how it feels and I'm right there with you with the paranoia; I can't help but think every slight difference in urination means I'm gonna need another catheter. It's hard to distinguish which symptoms are real and which I've made up in my head. Like right now, I am able to urinate just fine, but I get a sense of incomplete bladder and like I have to pee all the time. I am also feeling this ticklish sensation in my urethra. Not sure if these are warning signs of an outbreak or UTI symptoms as I am more prone to getting those too. I feel like going to urgent care to get a urine test and rule it out but I don't know if I'm being paranoid or not!!! Maybe you've had these symptoms before and can help me?

Omg I am the same way.. Im at the start of another outbreak as I havent been taking my valtrex regularly and I've had this horrible disease for 3 yrs this May, and I dont udnerstand why without meds, its getting worse and worse every month and i'm getting sicker and sicker. Not sure if this is normal. I am now having a hard time going to the bathroom is I am swelling down there. And now I am getting myself worked up if I'm gonna need a catheter again if the swelling becomes too much, or my new one I'm freaking myself out is what if it travels to my brain and i get herpes meningitis since the reactivation is coming back so bad. Its freaking me out this is so horrible.

I do get a weird ticklish sensation in my urethra too! is it almost like twitchy feeling? It may be an outbreak coming. I think I had it the other day before this mess started. My outbreak now and a few weeks ago started w a bad headache, itchy, tired, now im swelling and in pain down there but no sores. This is crazy. But I also get a feeling sometimes if incomplete bladder also! And Im not sure what that is. But I havent been the same since.. I can only guess our nerves down there have been damaged a bit, and thats why we feel "off" bc ive gone to urologist in the past over that feeling and I'm fine.

That's what I'm thinking, maybe damaged nerves from the virus or something. I really hate this virus and wish I could honestly get it out of my body. It's causing me so many problems.

I am no doc, but my 2cents is that the virus can sometimes overwhelm the immune system and cause secondary infections in immunocompromised ppl. I am barely learning that can also cause urinary tract infections, which can go to the bladder if untreated. (very cloudy urine) Not saying this is the case with anyone, but if you believe it to be see a doc or try Black seed oil. Plus, always urinate after sex right away to take care of one possible challenge. I can't vouch for it, but I did read that it will stop bacterial vaginosis in it's tracks. It is easy to get if our PH is off, use test strips, they come in a roll at The Vitamin Shoppe.

Black seed oil amazon click here 24.00 and it will last my family a yr. I take 1 t upon awakening and bedtime  for 10 days, with a snack/water to kill the taste.

If you hate the taste of a mild oregano get gel pills instead, but it is much more expensive.

ETA: You are correct, it can be damaged nerves, but make sure that is the diagnosis. how often does it occur? Idk

I too am feeling like I have to use the bathroom constantly. I also drip a lot more urine from my penis. I'm starting to get soreness in the area where the ureters are. There is also a burning sensation in my urethrae.

      Hello,
I was diagnosed with hsv1&2 earlier this year. I was prescribed 1g of valtrex (valacyclovir) a day for suppressive therapy.  Valtrex helps greatly with my symtoms, but I recently had to leave my job for health reasons and will no longer have health insurance to get prescribed valtrex.
Does anyone know where I can purchase valtrex (valacyclovir) online without a prescription?

I had a potential exposure about 12 days ago with a random (not my gf). The lady gave me protected oral however prior to putting the condom on she had masturbated me and at some point took saliva from her mouth as lubrication when rubbing my penis. Almost immediately within less than 24 hrs I started to feel tingling in my genital area. Not continuously but once every few hours.  At first I thought it was just psycological. I started to monitor my penis daily to see if there were any changes. About 7 days after the exposure I started to notice very small red bumps in the gland area. Tingling had increased but I had no pain and no itchiness sometimes the sensation would be coldish almost numbing like. I went to an sti clinic and was told the reddish area was not indicative of herpes and that it looked more like an irritation. I was told there was no sore or blister to swab for culture analysis. Additionally I was asked to come back in a month for blood testing. They said my chance of getting genital herpes from such saliva transmission was low?? They never explained why the tingling though. 2 days later the tingling still had not stopped and now I could feel tingling occasionally in my but cheeks and tailbone..very mild tingling sensation. On day  10 the swelling increased slightly and I thought I could see a bump in my urethra . I went to a walk in clinic and the doctor also dismissed it that it isn’t herpes.  I’m now on day 12 since exposure The redness and swelling has reduced significantly hardly noticeable now but tingling in genital area and buttocks has not subsided comparatively. Additionally today for the first time I felt tingling and slight pains in my feet. I’m not sure what to do. Is this herpes. I have a girlfriend and I’m praying I have not infected her. It would break my heart if I had she doesn’t deserve that. She hasn’t mentioned any symptoms and she is the type to say if she did. But I can’t ask her to get checked yet cause I’m not sure if it is or isn’t ? Are my symptoms indicative of herpes or not with  redness and tingling but no sores or blisters ?? Also is the prodome phase of tingling in feet and buttocks indicative of herpes initial exposure ??Wishing everyone here answers and happiness through their journey

This week I went to an Urgent Care with the complaints of vaginal itching.. Today I just so happened to look at my visit summary and noticed that Herpes Virus 8 DNA Real-Time PCR was ordered. Is this test normally used for genital herpes??? I’m confused

June 3rd I may of been exposed to Herpes.
Performed oral and vaginal sex with a one night stand.  A few days later, "felt off" and got tested on the 7th (negative for all stds, but not tested for herpes)
Took a round of Doxycycline the following week around the 14th for a few days as I was feeling extremely Hot and urinating frequently.  It seemed to help for an instant, however still feeling off.
Tested again n the 28th - Negative for all stds including HSV igg however positive for HSV igm with an index of 1.14 (Positive being anything greater than 1.1) *approximately 26 days after suspected exposure
Dr. prescribed Valacyclovir 2x day.  Started taking medication July 2nd.
Pain and discomfort in the penis continuing.  With sensations in the pelvic area and kidneys.
Tested again on July 20th - Negative for all stds and HSV igg/igm.
Tested again August 6th - Negative for all stds and HSV igg/igm.

I have been taking valacyclovir since July 2nd 2x daily.
I have felt just not right since the possible exposure date (or shortly after).
My penis has gone through feelings of tingling sensations, heat, pain but not to touch, pain in my pelvis.  Things seemed to of started with a burning sensation in the inner thigh.
I feel as I am having shooting sensation in my legs and occasionally have an itchy/tingle around where my pubic hair is from time to time.  Hell, today and maybe yesterday I've noticed tingling in my scalp.
I tried again today to not take the valacyclovir and lasted until about 11:30 am after waking up around 8 am.  My lips and the skin around my face starts to burn and the tingling around the pubic hair area of my genitals increase in its sensations.  It's almost as a sleeping demon is waking up when I don't take the meds.  When I take it, it takes about a day or so for things to get back in control.
My penis/genitals have also not smelled the same since.  It seems my scent has changed.
Today is day 68 - is this how it's going to be forever?
I am worried I have this all over my face as the burning is in the corners of my mouth and down my chin, as well as my nose.
I have not shown any sores however I do feel my penis and scrotum has felt hot and sometimes red, typically on the head of the penis at the urethra.  Multiple dr's say it looks normal to them.
I am so lost and feel like I am falling apart physically, mentally and emotionally.  I guess I just wait until week 12 (in a few more weeks) to maybe test positive... but then what?

Symptom started with itching constantly for few days during my final exams. As I could not take the itch any longer in my anal area I am applied a steroid cream twice in three days. It inflamed and irritated and pained slightly and it subsisted after 2-3 days after stopping the tropical cream (that a derm suggested).

Does this sound like herpes? Is this something I have to get checked PCr swabbed? When I saw a physician he dismissed and did not swab despite begging him many times. What would be your thoughts?

Hey @Fernie hope you are going well. The doctor is spot on here. Many people with HSV-1 end up with slightly elevated results for HSV-2 that does not indicate infection with HSV-2. This persists from test to test for some people. The Westernblot would be useful to you, but will just confirm what is being said to you. Most people actually with HSV-2 test above 3.5 on those sorts of tests.

Just got off the phone with a doctor and they said based off the history of my tests, it’s most likely a false positive.    they also said that because I have hsv1 that that could be causing the false positive
    • ChattyB
How do you know you have hsv-2 orally.  I read that having hsv-2 orally is highly unlikely.

I’m so confused and don’t know what to do.    Sorry for posting here so much but I’m just lost.   I’ve tested normal on these dates 7/14/2020 0.72 IGG , 10/28/2020 0.89 IGG.    Then I tested low positive 6/6/2021 1.11 IGG.    I went back after that test to confirm the abnormal results on 7/29/2021 0.78 IGG were the results which led me to believe that the first abnormal results were just wrong.    Fast forward to now I just got my results back this morning from 11/27/2021 1.17 IGG, were the results. I’m just so confused, don’t know what to do. I’m going to have a consultation over the phone with a physician today and I also reached out to Terri from Westover Heights.    At this point I’m considering a western blot and I’m so paranoid I also signed up for another full panel std testing. I’m just so confused and stressed out.  Hope my buddy @WilsoInAus sees this
